Rogue New Crustacean Barleywineish Imperial IPA Sorta

Rogue New Crustacean Barleywineish Imperial IPA Sorta

Dedicated to Crustaceans

The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy! 24°P. 8 Ingredients: Weyermann & Bohemian Malts; Bravo, Amarillo, Falconer's FLight & Warrior Hops; Free Range Coastal Water & Pacman Yeast.

3.7 Aroma of bitter orange & sweet clementine. Hazy orange with long lasting white head. Very intense bitterness. Full bodied, sticky texture & average carbonation.
3.8 750 ml bottle. Pours a deep gold with moderate head. Aromas of sugary tropical fruit leaning towards pineapple, sweet doughy malts, and paste. Flavors of same with additional fruit and resin. Very nice.
3.3 Quite bitter as it should be, however it's slightly astringent. Not so cleanly made, lacking a bit of body for the ibus. Pretty average for an ipa. Bottle from bc.
3.8 Bottle. Clear and golden with a big head. Lots of hop aroma. Thick malt backbone. Alcohol is well hidden. The malt profile isn’t quite sweet enough or dark enough for me to call it a barleywine. But it’s a fine double IPA.
3.5 Pours golden in color with white head. Deep malty aroma. Big malty earthy flavor, moderately sweet. Notes: on tap at he brewery, Portland visit May 17
3.8 Taste up front is big slightly sweet malts with a creeping back end of hops, with a good bitterness in the finish.
3.5 750 ml bottle. Pours a straw yellow that is cloudy. Full of flavor, sweet and hoppy. Does not taste like an 11.6% ABV beer.
3.5 Draft @ Rogue Ales Public House - San Francisco, San Francisco, CA. Pours a golden color with a small white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy herbal floral aroma. Fruity malty dry grassy hoppy bitter herbal flavor. Has a fruity malty dry hoppy bitter finish.
3.3 Without any look at the label except the name, pours a hazy yellow. The taste is kinda bland. The aroma is nice. After taste is long lasting
3.1 750ml bottle no date. Pour hazy golden no date. Arome is oxidize hop, barley and ethetyl. Taste bad bread. Long bitter finish. High carbonation.
3.6 Bomber shared by Big Lou, thanks buddy! Aroma is caremel and hops. Taste is super bitter, not much barleywine here. Not my thing.
3.9 Bottle shared by Lou. Murky gold pour. Spearmint, hoppy, caramel. This is cool!
3.9 In a 10oz glass at humpys ale house in Kona Hi. An orangey aroma with pleaseant citrusey smells. A very crisp malty enjoyable taste .
3.8 Poured from bomber orange with thin white head kinda oily with medium carbonation aroma is orange taste is orange and booze with a bitter finish very happy with this.
3.4 (Tap) hazy bright yellow colour with a small white head; aroma of citrus, jam; balanced flavour with a long medium bitter finish
3.8 Bottle - the pour is cloudy with a orange body and a creamy white head. The aroma is hops, barley, something bright I cannot peg. Maybe hints of cilantro. The taste is smooth, I see the barely wine, and Imperial ipa, the overall impression I get is a strong imperial beer. Good hop backbone followed by a good malt base and bright citrus and hoppy finish. The mouthfeel is thick and smooth with a nice carbonated finish.
4.0 Grunt fill from Albertsons. Dark golden dragon en body, instant small, fluffy head. Big warm, malty aroma, taste Ramos up the heat. Boozy notes, sweet malts, small bitter hops bite. Really nice on this cold wet day.
4.1 Aromas of tropical fruit and background citrus hops with medium caramel/bready malt and low to medium citrus hops and some esters. Pours an orange-deep golden, quite hazy with a long lasting, off white head. The palate is well balanced, with a medium alcohol warmth and stone fruit hops mixed with bready malt and a medium high hop bitterness. Long, balanced finish. It may be because it was the last beer of the evening, but I didn’t find the alcohol as harsh as some other raters.
2.6 Bottle in sommerhus. Hazy golden, large white head. Massive booze, sugar, green plants, dry flowers, hay, wood. Heavy bitterness. Rough and boozy enough to kill small animals and skinny nerds.
3.3 Sampled on draft at Tapped this beer poured a murky orange-tan color with a medium sized creamy orange-white head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was sweet pine, orange and a bit of yeastiness. The flavor was bitter with a harsh alcohol presence, rough grapefruit, pine, orange and medicine. Amazing long finish. Moderately full bodied.
3.6 Bottle in Sommerhuset. Pours a clear golden with a small off-white head. Sweet with a mellow dryness. Aromas of caramel malts and sprucey hops. Also hints of peaches and alcohol. Medium to full bodied. Medium to soft carbonation. Sweet and bitter finish.
3.6 Bottle split at Sentinel, thanks to James, 20/05/16. Hazed orange amber with a decent off white head. Nose is sweet toffee, light biscuit malt whisper, spice, booze tunes, fruit esters. Taste comprises bitter orange, sweet licks, caramel dollop, light earthy hop, honeycomb. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough barley wine.
3.7 750ml bottle. Pale orange with a fine white head. Hops, elderflower, and faint orange on the nose, with a hint of haylage. Smooth flavour with aspirin bitterness, citrus, floral notes, and haylage. Pleasing dry mouthfeel and warmth upon swallowing.
3.7 Clear amber color, moderate head, good lace/retention. Aroma is grapefruit, citrus, caramel, orange, sweet malts, light alcohol. Medium to full body, tastes about what you’d expect it to - a hopped up barley wine with a fair amount of sweetness. Semi chewy, grapefruit and orange flavors in finish.
3.9 Super strange aroma of candies, malty and sweet. Golden almost clear color. Perfect lacing. Taste also super weird. Sweet, licorice, malty. Sweetness is very nicely countered by bitterness. Big body, quite thick and dense. Very interesting brew!
3.8 On draught during the "Fat Head’s Hits Bob’s Bar" event on 05/17/2016. Hazy orange color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily to a wispy film. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of tropical fruit, malt and hops. Full-bodied with flavors of piney hops, caramel malt and citrus, The finish is fruity hops up front with a lingering toffee and malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
3.6 Bottle shared during welfare tour of the shires bottle from James cheers mate; clear golden yellow pour with a thin white head, big fruit aroma along with sticky toffee, taste has tangerine, some sweet toffee, quite chewy and thick, ABV is quite harsh.
2.6 On tap at P&P Charleston. Hazy golden with small white head. Malt aroma, medium body, lower carbonation, and little lacing. Taste is malt and alcohol. Too much alcohol.
4.1 0,75l bottle brought by a friend from Susan’s Fine Wine and Spirits, shared in a tasting. Pours thick hazy golden with a low head. Aroma is sweet malts, fruits, pine and hops. Flavor is creamy sweet malts, tropical fruits, pine, alcohol and hops. Excellent.
3.7 Pours a hazy medium reddish brown. Aromas of light fruit, hops, caramel malts, kind of medicinal. Flavor is to strong for me, big alcohol taste, malty with a spicy taste.
