3.5Brown-black with thin, but perfect chocolate cream head. Wonderful salty chocolate sea air nose with a whisper of steamship smoke. The flavor yaws toward the smokier end with a thick, oily, sooty black patent-forward body with a salty, caramel underpinning. Wet sooty, roasty mouthfeel. Very thick stuff, though I wish the flavor would develop a bit mroe.
3.4Underwhelming. No initial smell. Pours black with great lacing. Average carbonation. Has booze and roast malt in aroma. On tap at Hopcat.
3.565 cl bottle @ home. Rated on 07.11.2009
Aroma has some smoke, tar and distant woody notes. Flavour is somewhat sweet smoke, some tar, woody notes and hints of chocolate. Sticky palate, but still feels a bit thin.
4.2Draft while waiting for the wort to boil at Copper Kettle Brewing in Pittsburgh. Nicely balanced while maintaining a certain crispness on the mouth feel. Here the smokiness is not overwhelming or heavy, just sorta creeps in on the palate at just the right time. Similar to the German smoked beers and very welcome this side of the ocean as all too few of the craft brewers are willing to produce in this neglected family. Cheers for Rogue’s accomplishment.
3.8Clear dark copper. Sweet, pine, and definitely smokey, but not like a typical smoked porter. Would be great w jerkey or fish.
4.54 oz sample at Rogue Brewers on the Bay yesterday. Pours hazy goldish amber with nice lace. Aroma and taste are all campfire smoke, smoked meats, delicious. Nice smoked beer.
2.9Typically love smoked ales, but this is absolutely no good. nothing pleasant about it at all. Rogue continues to disappoint me...
3.1Light amber with a thin white head. Aroma is smoked malt, reminiscent of smoked meat. Flavor is same as the aroma with a slight sweetness in the finish. Could use a little more body to round out the smoke flavor. Overall, not bad, but I prefer my smoke in a heavier beer.
3.3Cloudy brown color. The head is one-finger in height, creamy and white. The aroma is of smoked malt, and more smoked malt. The taste is of smoked malt with some caramel in the background. The mouthfeel is a little lighter than medium bodied, with a lot of carbonation.
3.8Pint on tap at Peles in Jacksonville. Clear orange-amber beer with small white head. Aroma of smoke with light notes of malt, leather, and spice. Flavor is smoke and ash with caramel and a bit of fruit. Smooth medium body and lightly hoppy finish. Very tasty and drinkable smoke ale. 6.2% ABV. Excellent.
3.6Draught @ Rogue Public House, San Francisco, CA
Pours reddish orange with a tiny smooth white head. Aroma has a lot of smoke notes, burnt leather, ash and malts. Taste has notes of leather, smoke and hints of ash and fruits. Finish is slightly hoppy with fruity hints. A bit untypical, but quite tasty smoked ale.
3.6On tap at Coles
Aroma mild, mid depth of smoke, backing of ash-wood, phenolic with s
light spice.
Appearance mid haze on amber , creamy white mid top. Sparse lace. 3+
Flavor and Palate : gentle malty base with acidic smoky touch,. Goes well with soft malty bottom. Apple wood. Subtle ,neat well composed.
Earlier Rating: 4/21/2005 Total Score: 3.5
Nicely presenting ale, decent crown on top .Medium intense smoke aroma, softer, creamier at end. Chewy malts with smoky theme. Not as smoky as some are. Good balance.
3.5Served on draft at Beer Run. Pours a clear amber color with a thin off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of hickory smoke and mild stone fruits. The taste is smoke, caramel and a hoppy finish. Medium bodied.
3.3Dark, clear, orange-brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of smoked pork and malt. It tastes like a hop-deficient amber ale and smoke. Medium bodied, low carbonation. Ok.
3.4draft at Coles, Buffalo, NY. caramel colored pour. Mild smoke in the aroma. Seems like a pretty boring ale with a touch of smoke, a smoked amber. seems like it would be an incredibly boring beer without the smoke, however i like drinking it
3.4On tap at flying saucer. Pours a cloudy orange copper with a small frothy off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is a smoke and pepper. Thin mouthfeel with a very dry pepper and smoke finish. A decent Smoked from Rogue.
4.1On tap at Cole’s Buffalo. Rogue John’s Locker Smoke Ale. Very strong smoke aroma and lighter taste of smoke in this dark ale. Medium body and slight bitterness.
3.7Clear dark amber color with a heavy smoke aroma-like a smoldering campfire. Almost exclusive smoke flavor with some hints of meat. If you like smoke, this is a good beer.
3.0Lättdrucken. Lätt rökt, lätt kropp och måttlig beska. Trevlig men kanske lite karaktärslös.
3.4From cask. Pours cloudy orange with a small tan head. Aroma is smoked, meaty and light caramelish. Sweet malty, meaty, malty and distinct smoked. Bitter, dry and herbal. Smoked and dry malty into the finish. Ends dry and lingering smoked meaty.
4.2Gravity cask at GBBF, Day 4. Pours cloudy amber with a dense, foam head. Big smoke nose, beach wood, not dark and roasty, subtle ham and minerals. Medium sweet flavor, some honey-cured ham, smoked cedar, cheese, light caramel and toast. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Great condition. Plenty smokey on the finish but not at all overbearing. The sweetness counters the smoke wonderfully. Bit more honey and caramel, rocks and minerals. Excellent.
3.4Bottle. Pours dark amber. Nose and taste of smoky BBQ, brown sugar, light hops and some roasted caramel malts.
2.6Bottled in 1997. Dark, no carbonation. Tons of smoke aroma. Taste is fairly thin, but with smoke and malt in there. Obviously too old, but it got hidden away years ago and I wanted to give it a try. Not fair to rate it here (especially since I don’t care for smoked beers) but thought it would be interested to post the tasting here so it’s so old.
3.0Dark mahogany body, tane head. Aroma of sugar and smoked ham. Flavour is very small. There is only the smoked ham. Some bitterness. Dull.
3.6Poured amber. With thin head that left almost no lacing. Smelled smokey tasted like campfire good beer
2.516th January 2008
Sweetish amber beer. Trace of caramel. Dominated by a reasonably mellow smoke. Also has a medicinal note. Mellow smoke but too much of it.
2.822 oz bottle: Pours a dark golden copper with a nice white head. Aroma is not too distinct, malty, slightly smoked. Taste is a nice smooth brown ale with a nice smokey aftertaste. Smooth and easy to drink, would pair well with many foods.
3.8(Bottle) Dark amber colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, smokey nose with notes of beechwood smoke, caramel, dried fruit, raisins, dried apricots, smoked ham and hints of orange peel. Malty, smokey taste with caramel, smoke, dried fruit, orange peel and a decent citrussy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, smooth and rounded mouthfeel. Mainly dry. Excellent balance. Smoke is more prominent in the aroma than in the taste, but there’s some smoked ham there as well. Very nice beer.
3.0650 ml bottle. 7%. Am10. From Malmö, Sweden.
Hazy amber colour with tiny off-white head.
Aroma is malt and smoked ham.
Malt, smoked ham and not much hops.
A bit boring Rauchbier.
