3.0 From a bottle, aged almost two years. Thanks Joe! Pours hazy copper with lots of particles floating around and a fizzy, bubbly beige head. Smells really sweet, like maple syrup, glazed donuts, and also smokey. Tastes like alcohol, smokey, and earthy, a little bit bitter. Light body and low carbonation
3.4 "As advertised, though for some unknown reason, i thought it was a porter, not a golden/amber brew. huge maple aroma upon cracking the top. replaced by nice smoky bacon while pouring, and then alternated between them the rest of the way. That’s what I dug the most...the "balance" if you will between the smoke (while i wouldn’t be able to pick them out individually, the fact that they used 3 different wood-smoked malts and applewood-smoked bacon was evident in the beer’s complexity of flavor and aroma), the maple (done well, but what exactly is PURE flavoring?) and the bacon. I had had turkey bacon that morning and it was spot on. It was the consensus that this beer tasted and smelled exactly like they wanted it to. It was also a little too light and thin bodied to support all those flavors, but honestly, that was this beers only drawback. Besides the price-tag. :) Maybe not something I’d want a whole pint of, but I’m glad I got 2. Loved sharing this. Not quite as good the 2nd time around...bacon apparently doesn’t age well :)"
2.6 Transfer from BA review on 9-23-13- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange-reddish amber color with a big billowy orange-cream tinted head. The head has a decent level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave some nice streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is quite robust of maple syrup smells as well as a smoky, saltwater, and toffee smell. Mixed with these are some bready aromas as well as some meaty smells with hints of hickey smoked bacon mixed within. It actually smells like a mix of very salty maple salt water taffy, doughnuts, and smoked meat. A rather interesting aroma overall. Taste – The taste begins with a somewhat sweeter flavor of maple syrup and toffee with some bready malt. A hint of smokiness is present upfront, with this flavor growing stronger and stronger as the taste advances to the end. Notes of seawater work their way to the tongue along with some flavors of a somewhat oddly bitter bacon/meat taste. The sweeter flavors that were present upfront fade as the taste transitions on to the middle. The bacon taste with lots of flavors of smoke and salt are quite potent at the end and due to a surge of the sweeter flavors of maple syrup and toffee to the levels that were present upfront a rather off slightly bitter and sort of disgustingly sweet and smoky meat taste is left to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on medium side in terms of thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. I think it is appropriate for the style as it does make it somewhat drinkable, but overall I am not 100% sure. Overall – Well… It looked and smelled rather nice, but the taste was just way too off. It was one I always wanted to try out of curiosity. Now with the curiosity satisfied I will almost assuredly never buy it again. But even with that said, I would recommend to anyone to try it, as it is quite the novelty with quite the reputation.
3.7 roasty, nuts, caramel, cough drop, woody, smoke, golden, clear, white foam, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, salty, thin feel, medium body, average carbonation, long finish,
2.7 Thanks to whoever brought this one to Capone’s. Sampled from a sampler glass. A - Pours murky amber orange with a small half finger tall white head leaving light lace down the glass. S - Smells of lots of smoke, a bit of maple sweetness and not much else. I like it for what it is but I really don’t get a lot of maple or doughnut. More like a slightly sweet smoked porter. T - Starts off with plenty of smoke slowly giving way to a mix of sweetness and even more smoke and that is about it. The nose are decent but the taste was a big let down. The finish is just like the beginning, smoke and sweetness, lingering for some time. M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Smokey, slightly sweet, feel that lingers through the finish. O - Not bad but not great either. This is mostly just a glorified sweet smoked ale. If you have a good imagination you might like this one but just based off the beer it is just OK.
2.2 Pours brown with a small head. Overly sweet maple aroma with some bacon. Sugary bacon fat flavor. Bleh.
2.9 Pours light brown with a tan head. Aroma sweet maple. Flavor smoky, maple sugar, and bacony. Too much on the smokiness. I was expecting more..but hey...this was unique...one time tasting....and the bottle is marvelous!
2.9 Butelka Barwa bursztynowa. Piana drobna, obfita, trwała. Słodki zapach syropu klonowego i lukru. W smaku syrop klonowy, palony kabel, bardzo słaba nuta wędzonego bekonu. Goryczka niska. Piwo nudne i nijakie.
4.2 Pink bottle @joes. Nice bottle. Amber color with a small white head. Smells sweet, vanilla, maple sirup, candy. Tastes sweet, smoked, maple, finally notes, sweet. Nice.
3.3 Pours a golden slightly unclear beer with a good white head. Smells fruity, maple, wood, forest and resin. Tastes maple, woods, watery. Strange, not bad. Average carbo, thin body and a watery texture.
3.1 Inte det absolut bästa genom tiderna. Skulle nog inte ha öppnat denna. Bättre jag inte hade vetat
2.8 BOTTLE. Got a lot of smoked ham up front with a very sticky sweet maple finish, seemed to be very cloudy & copper in colour. With a very sweet & sticky aroma from the maple.... Sourced from Cellarbrations @ Capel
3.6 Bottle at home. Pours copper, smoky maple nose, burnt taste, smoky at first with some sweetness.
3.3 Bottle shared with friends @ home. Color: dark amber beer with small carbonation and small white foam. Smell: maple sugar domination with some malty notes and caramel. Taste: maple sugar and caramel. Aftertaste: maple sugar.
3.0 Very smokey, nice bottle. Pink bottle on lake.
4.5 Pours very dark brown, with a very thick, quickly dissipating head. Powerful aromas of bacon and maple immediately waft up from the bottle and glass. Smells like a Canadian breakfast in a bottle. Tastes of very smoky bacon, with hints of maple coming through. Surprisingly not all that sweet, which was a welcome surprise. Overall, easy to dismiss as a novelty beer, but this one has some legs, and I could definitely drink it again.
2.5 Bottle, thanks SirLimpsalot. Brownish with a small head. Aroma and taste of smoke, bacon, butter and something sweet. Strange and not really my kind of beer.
2.8 @basunen: ganska rökig doft. Smaken är typisk baconsälta och kanske inte mycket annat. Mycket torv och rök. Speciell. ---- Soberness not garanteed!
3.2 Not really my cup of tea but it definitely tasted like a maple bacon doughnut. It gets points for originality.
4.5 good strong smoked flavor. not sweet like the name implies. a good solid ale
1.6 Two year bottle I've been scarred to open.smells kinda tootsie rolley. Liquid smoke, shitty bacon and grass??? Gross. 10 people couldn't get through half of it.
2.0 Flaska. Intressant knappast mer. Baconsmaken sitter som klistrad i gommen o du får inte bort den. Nja öl jag vet inte.
3.3 Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; hazy light amber pour with an off white head, big maple and light smoke aroma, sweet doughnut taste with maple hints of smoke, quite a forced artificial flavour.
3.4 750ml bottle. Pours dark orange with a small head. Aroma is maple syrup, donuts and a little bacon. Taste is sweet with icing sugar to start and an artificial smoky finish.
2.5 Bottle at the Hickster Invasipn. Pours a murky brown with no head. Smoke, maple, bacon aroma. Thin, no carb. Tastes of maple more than anything. Not good.
2.6 Bottle from Tommann. Sweetish aroma. It’s a little musty. sweet. Not for me. Some maple syrup.
3.4 Very strong initial aroma and punch on the taste. Aftertaste has bitter and thick lingering but a bit thin in the mouth. Great golden orange colouring, lots of lacing with an initial big pillowy head.
3.6 Can smell the maple smoked bacon a mile away. A little sweet and some chemical taste afterwards. Takes awhile for it to develop into a pleasant taste, alot going on. Good effort, nice change up.
4.0 I can see why this beer divides opinion. It smells great, sweet maple syrup from the off, followed up by smoked bacon. Pours a murky orange with a thin head. Taste starts with the sweet maple, bacon is a subtle protein hint followed by the smoke. After a while the smoke does get a bit much but if you drink this beer at a nice leisurely pace then it is manageable. If you don’t like smoked beer stay away! If you don’t think beer can have a sense of humour, stay well clear!
