Rogue XS Imperial India Pale Ale (I²PA)

Rogue XS Imperial India Pale Ale (I²PA)

Above and beyond an India Pale Ale--I2PA is radically hopped with an intense aroma and hop bitterness. Unfiltered and aged for 9 months before it leaves the brewery--not for the faint of heart. I2PA is brewed with two-row Pipkin Pale malts, Saaz, Cascade and Northwest Golding hops.

3.9 Tap. Dark Amber pour with a big white head. Citrus, fruits, hop. Deep full flavor with nice balance of bitterness and sweetness
3.3 10oz on tap at HalfCut. Nice grapefruit hop up front. Some bready malt. Pine. Moderate to bigger sweet taste. Moderate bitter. Bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft, lighter carbonation. Kind of slick. Clear orange color. Ring of white head. Loose bits of lace. Solid, but malty; sweet.
4.1 On tap at City Beer Hall in Albany. Served in a tulip. Deep copper color with a thin head. Excellent hop profile and balance. Good malt backbone in the middle. Lingering citrus piney bitterness. Lovely!
4.0 Tap at the brewery with commonshawn, rosskyle, and wildcard. Very unique Rogue goblet. Clean appearance with an orange hue. Head disappeared quickly and wasn?t all that full in the first place. Citrus and tropical fruit in the nose with some bitterness. Mouthfeel is oily and resiny. Plenty of hops with a smooth citrus taste. Easy to drink and gets better as consumption continues. Rogue delivers an enjoyable although slightly straightforward double IPA.
3.2 Tap. Pours a light brown (?) with a thin layer of tan colored head. Aroma and taste is malt forward with some hops.
4.3 Large Format - Thick white head with large bubbles. Cloudy orange color with what looks like suspended particles in the beer. Very thick beer if that makes sense. Taste has a good amount of hop bitterness, little to no malt flavor which is good.
3.6 On tap. Pours clear golden with a thin off white head. Aroma is sweet malts, caramel, butterscotch, light sweet fruits, some alcohol. Taste is strong sweet malts, some light fruitiness again, robust vegetal bitterness, quite some booze. Oily mouthfeel, full body, light carbonation.
3.2 Pours slightly hazy to cloudy pale amber with one fingers of rocky white head, good retention and minimal lacing. (3/5) Nose is caramel malt, pithy citrus, pine resin, mild floral. (7/10) Taste is moderate sweet, moderately strong bitter. (6/10) Medium body, moderate to low carbonation, slightly boozy finish. (4/5) Nothing too thrilling - a fairly standard heavy-handed, malt-forward DIPA. Doesn’t excite me, doesn’t turn me off. Damned with faint praise? Maybe - but that’s about what it deserves. (12/20)
4.7 Yeah, I'm a fan boy, but this just ticks all boxes, it flavoursome as well as sensuous on all other accounts. So many different scents, and tingles and yeah. Just, yeah. Oh baby.
3.8 Draft from r and h. Orangey brown pour with white head, hippy aroma, pine and resin. Quite nice iipa
3.8 wow great tasting double ipa...hoppy citrus nose...really nice even malt and hops blend...really nice beer...(#418)
4.1 Bottle (nice) - dark gold with slim white head. Aroma of citrus hops, pine, honey maybe. Excellent taste - citrus hops mainly, with touch of floral, nicely dry, good malt backbone. Medium to full bodied, softly carbonated. Nice long bitter finish, touch of late warming alcohol. An excellent DIPA.
3.6 Bottle shared @ home from Saveur-Biere.com - Color: hazy dark blond beer with no carbonation and small white foam. Smell: resin and hoppy domination with grassy finish. Taste: hoppy taste and resin notes. Woody taste and alcohol finish. Aftertaste: resin and caramel with alcohol notes. Maybe it was to late to drink this beer....
4.0 On tap at the PDX Airport Rogue Pub. Dark gold. Big white head. Lovely citrus hops aroma and flavor.
4.0 Riktigt bra balans och syrlighet både i arom smak och kroppen. Delades med Rydis och robert
3.8 On tap at Dexters, pours a hazy dark amber orange with a thin white head and some lacing in the glass, the aroma is of heavy citrus and hop resin with a pine touch as well, the flavor has a nice citrus front end with a pine and hop like finish, smooth mouthfeel, not bad.
4.5 Rated based on notes taken 30 Dec 2011 -- No notes taken other than a 4.5/5 rating.
3.6 Keg at the Rogue bar, PDX Flughafen, 12/11/14. Clear golden amber with moderate off white spotting and edgework. Nose is caramel malt forward, candied orange peel, bitter hops, light booze tunes. Taste comprises orange pith, bitter hoppy wash, grapefruit, mandarina, pine, caramel malt - less so than the aroma dictated. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok DIPA.
3.4 Keg at the drygate. Pours clear golden amber, merest white head that appears to be forming into a map of Scotland. I know where I am now at least. Aromas are lemon verbena, floral, light syrup. Taste is light bitter, floral notes, almost perfumed and quite intense. Sweet, syrupy finish. Ok.
3.7 A complex aroma of cucumber, melon, hops and citrus with a cloudy amber color and an off white head. Interesting taste of hips and melon with a hint o cucumber. Dry feel with a slightly bitter floral citrus finish.0
5.0 This beer is not in front of me right now but I have had this several times, the first being back in 1999 long before I would ever see another imperial IPA. A very unique hop profile with the refreshing quench of the saaz and the cascade pine and earthy EKG, well balanced malt backbone. The recipe may have changed since the commercial listing but I remember that formula well as it was the first beer I tried to copy in a homebrew recipe to achieve those hop flavors. Very unique from what west coast IPA hop profiles are like.
3.6 On tap, poured into a goblet. Aromas of resin, grass, and citrus greet the nose, along with a touch of bread crust and honey. It’s a clear, effervescent, oily orange yellow beer topped by a soapy, medium thin ring and wispy surface. A light lace is left aling the glass. The taste is a rather well balanced medium high bitter and sweet. It’s full bodied with fizzy carbonation. The texture is viscous and contains flavors of citrus (in abundance), moderate pine, bread crust, honey, with mild spicy pine finish. The spice is a bit stronger in the aftertaste and has a somewhat burnt note to it.
3.7 "this is a big and chewy imperial ipa...wish they didn’t switch to ceramic bottles at $12 a pop. oh well. a little bitter, and less floral/aromatic than i like, but still a good beer. nice biscuity malty backbone. just not a good value."
3.1 The beer pours to a cloudy copper color with very little head. The aroma has a floral resin scent to it with a background alcohol flavor. The taste is medium body with a good amount of bitterness on the finish. Overall a good DIPA.
3.5 It poured a hazy golden/brown color with an off-white head. The aroma was of resinous citrus and piney hops, with a boozy caramel malt backbone. The taste was similar with lots of booze and malts, and still plenty of hops. Nice.
3.8 AKA Rogue I2(squared)PA. Imperial India (double I) Pale Ale. First rated January 24th, 2014. Earlier Rating: 1/26/2014 Total Score: 4.7 An I2PA (aka, Imperial India Pale Ale). This one is packed full of delicious hop flavor, and a ton of alcohol by volume. Definitely one of Rogue’s best. Highly recommended.
3.7 Tasted from the 750ml XS bottle. Seems golden amber in colour that starts clear and gets progressively cloudier as you get further through the bottle. There is a temporary white head and some evident carbonation. Aromas of rich fruitiness are apparent and some resinous Pacific NW hops. There is gentle carbonation in the mouth and then a blast of tart resinous bitterness that showcases the nectarine, peach and apricot of the hopping and malt combination. This carries on and gets more and more bitter, making the finish a lengthy affair that is still bringing me those sour orchard flavours more than half an hour after consumption... ...which I like.
3.8 A great double IPA. Pours am attractive orange with wonderful lacing. Aromas are very malty. So are the flavors. Caramel and resin. Nice.
3.3 Plenty of hops, notably cascade with pine/citrus bitterness. A smooth, sweetish malt.
2.7 Keg @El Lúpulo Feroz, Oviedo. 01-01-2014. In short: watery IPA. Pours clear golden, with some white head, poor lacing. Caramel, alcohol, herbal aromas. Medium body, soft to average carbonation, crispy texture. Taste is mild bitter, herbal, some caramel. A bit watery, tasteless and disgusting finish.
