3.8 Draught at Toronado SF. Opaque black liquid with small to medium light tan head. Aroma of coffee, licorice, light ash, toast and light grain. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of licorice, coffee and wood. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Solid.
3.8 On tap at Toronado. Deep copper brown pour with creamy tan head. Aroma is very toasty, light molasses. Taste is toasty, very bready, nice soft sweet malt notes. Palate is med bodied with smooth carbonation. Good stuff.
3.5 Draft at Toronado SF. Pours deep brown-black with a creamy tan head. Light Belgian yeast in the nose, light roast, char. Ightbready-medium sweet flavor with ashy roast, scorched earth, baking cocoa, some leathery dried fruits. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lingering ash. Not bad.
3.1 Draft to taster at the brewpub. Looks solid; a fairly transparent copperish brown with foamy light beige head. Smells of dark malt and coffee roast alongside soft notes of Belgian yeast. Tastes like it smells with a mildly bitter medium-bodied mouthfeel. Not bad, but forgettable.
3.5 Tap at the brewpub. Spicy, roasty nose, raisins, chocolate. Black with lace. Sweet flavor, umami, soy sauce, spicy yeast, licorice, chocolate. Decent.
3.6 On tap at the brewery. Pours a dark copper with small beige head that lasts leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is roast, raisin, licorice. Medium mouth, similar flavors to nose, light dry finish, good.
3.6 4 4 x 7 15 3.75 3 oz chilled pour from tap into cylindrical taster as part of Russian River’s “everything on tap” sampled (16 beers this time around) at the brewery itself. I realize that drinking 16 different 3 oz pours is not ideal for proper rating, but when will I ever have an opportunity like this again? Starts with plum, ends with dirt (in the best possible way). Very earthy.
3.6 Draught at the Russian River Brewing Co, Santa Rosa, CA. Clear dark coppery brown colour with a small off-white head. Dark fruits... big time... and some yeast and sweet maltiness in the aroma. The flavour is dark fruits... and some mild yeast, sugary sweetness and sweet malt.
3.5 Reminds me of a milk stout. Some chocolate flavors and lasting too. Very well done.
4.0 on tap at the brewery; dark brown color; roasted malt and dark fruit aroma; a well balanced beer with roasted malt and dark fruit flavor with Belgian character; dry, slightly bitter finish
3.5 This poured a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma was of lightly roasted malt, Belgian yeast, dark fruit. Flavor similar, like a hybrid beer of.sorts, reminded me of hell hath mo fury.
3.2 [2/12/15] Draught at Russian River in Santa Rosa. Dark brown. Aroma of roast, dark fruits and licorice. Roasty flavor with dark fruits, some coffee, a bit of licorice and a bitterish finish. Medium-bodied.
3.2 On tap at the brewery. Pours black color, small had, little lacing. Aroma is cherries, fruit, and malt. Flavor is malty, cherries, little bit of fig, and some notable Belgian qualities. Not much in the way of hops (which is notable b/c RR does hops really well). Not bad. Not exceptional (like any hoppy beers RR does).
3.7 Dark red mahogany in color... Aroma of nutty brown malts, Belgian candi sugar... Flavor is sweet candi sugar, nuts, Belgian yeast on finish.... Solid
3.7 Sample tasted at Russian River, Santa Rosa, CA. The glass was brought with several other samples. The pour was a dark chestnut brown with a moderate light tan lasting covering. Aroma is toffee, dark malt notes, and dark fruit. Flavor is sweet caramel, spice notes, and dark fruits. Medium body and carbonation with a chocolate and malt finish. From notes 2/19/13.
3.5 Roasty and full flavoured for the style. Hops not particularly noticeable but then again this is styled as a ’Belgian Black’. Good depth of chocolate runs right through the palate.
3.7 Goblet at brewpub. Good aroma sweet yeasty. Chocolate earthy. Orangy brown color good head faded to a ring. Spotty lace. Sweet and sour flavor. Medium body creamy smooth mouthfeel. Sweet spot finish. Nice. A good moderate sour.
3.5 Draught @ Russian River, Santa Rosa, CA Pours dark reddish brown with a smooth head. Aroma of earthy notes, malts, yeast and some ripe fruits. Taste is smooth, sweet syrupy, roasty and earthy with some malts and yeast. Finish is smooth, hoppy and roasty with some syrup, earthy notes. A bit strange, feels like a brown ale.
3.4 Keg at Russian River, Sana Rosa, 27/04/14. Dark chestnut brown with a moderate light tan covering that retains well. Nose is toffee, dark malt notes, candied fruit rinds, dates, stoned fruits. Taste comprises frui loaf, spice, stoned fruits, figs, caramel. Mediu bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok well made Belgian stylee, not standout but doesn’t get to sweet nor did I lose interest in it.
4.1 Pours a dark amber brown color with an off white head. Chocolate, caramel, citrus and malt aroma. Chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, caramel and slight spice flavors. Medium body and carbonation with a chocolate and malt finish.
3.0 Fairly nice dark beer. Claims to be fruity but I only got a treacle flavour. Quite good, but perhaps best in small doses.
3.5 On tap at the brewpub. It pours a very dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is very fruity with over ripe plum, red grapes and some spicy yeast phenolics. The flavor is fruity with plum, pear, dates, light spicy esters, hints of banana and some dirty, ashy roast in the finish. Decent, but not really my kind of thing.
3.1 Dark Brown. Nose is cheesy with molasses great body. Sweet, shoe polish cloves and banas. Sweet finish. A bit too fruity and spicy for me.
4.4 Rich Belgian dubbel style beer. Lots of dark fruit, especially plum and raisins. Some subtle chocolate. Tried at the brewery in 2014.
4.0 On tap @ RR! Squid ink pour with a frothy latte head that took a while to settle. Loads of roasted malt, rich coffee, cocoa, candied plums, sugar dusted raisins, and peppery spice. Medium mouthfeel. Solid.
3.4 On tap @ RR. Amber brown with a thin tan head. Aroma and flavor of roasted malt, dough, light fruit, cane sugar, and plums. Sweet and dry.
4.0 On tap at the brewery. Pours a dark brown color without much head. Malty aroma, and strong malty flavor. Lingering burnt sugar but only mildly sweet.
3.6 Tried this one at the source. Pours brown pour with ruby edges and an off white to khaki creamy head on top. Low aromatics with some dark malts, a little roast, some yeast, chocolate, dark fruit. Very smooth velvety mouthfeel with low carbonation. Flavor is chocolate covered raisins, some yeast spice, very smooth, lightly sweet, no bitter. Pretty solid brew, and seems very similar to Salvation to me.
3.6 On tap at the Brewpub in February 2014. Almost black with a small head. Light roasted malt, yeast, chocolate, malt and light fruit. Smooth and easy to drink.
3.7 Sampler at the brewery- pours dark almost black. Aroma roasted malt. Taste is the same. Nice.
