Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #15

Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #15

This is the same beer as Divine Reserve No. 5. It was re-released as DR 15 on Jan. 26, 2015.

This Divine Reserve was inspired by the winning entry of the 2007 Big Batch Brew Bash homebrew competition, brewed by Mike Heniff, a highly decorated local Houston homebrewer. Russian Imperial Stouts are very big and very black and this one is no exception.

It was first brewed as DR5. DR15 has a rich malty body full of coffee and chocolate flavors and a spiciness derived from the combination hops and high alcohol. It was brewed with a variety of malts including 2 row pale, crystal, chocolate and roasted barley. It was hopped with Nugget, Willamette and Centennial. We used our Saint Arnold yeast to ferment it. It is unfiltered.

Enjoy at 45°F or warmer with some dark chocolate or a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

4.0 Aroma of chocolate and malts along with a fair amount of bourbon, taste is similar tons of chocolate, malts, vanilla, and bourbon. A touch thin, but very nice
4.3 Bottle thanks to my buddy Adam in Shreveport, Thanks! Bottle poured into a tulip -- The color is dark and looks delicious. Aroma is very inviting. Flavor is great! The flavors of roasty malts, sweet malts, and booze and melded together to make a delicious beer! That is an extremely well made Imp Stout.
4.3 Thanks for sharing Podjebier! 355 ml. bottle sampled during Carnivale Brettanomyces #4. Black, little mocha. Nose is umami, vanilla, sugar, creamy mocha, a touch too umami,… Taste is vanilla, mocha, mixed with some roast, booze, sugar, a bit thin, sweetish & umami-like with some candy, oily & a bit light. Lightly creamy body. Good but not top.
3.8 Bottle shared by Podjebier, small sample. Dark color, short head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate. Soft bitterness, chocolate. Decent stuff.
3.3 Bottle shared. Pours dark brown with pretty much no head. Aroma of sweet malt, toffee, caramel and chocolate. Flavour is heavy sweet. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Nice enough by very one dimensional.
3.8 Bottle. Pitch black with a fizzy latte-colored head. The nose blends torched barley with cocoa powder, charcoal smoke and boysenberry syrup. I also get subtle hints of licorice and roasted peanuts. In the flavor, dark fruits -- prune, grape -- become more apparent, but meld seamlessly with seared steak, bitter chocolate and a rum-like booziness. Finishes mostly dry. Carbonation in the creamy medium-full body is a little high, but that’s the only bad thing I can say about this one. A very solid, flavorful and complex stout.
3.9 Pours thick dark unclear with a dark caramel colored head. The aroma is bready with light toffee and creamy almost toasted char, but not roasted malts. The flavor brings roasted malts smooth with notes of dark lightly bitter cacao and coffee.
3.6 This poured a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma was of roasted malt, some dark chocolate, and that’s about it. Flavor was a bit ashy and acrid and some dark chocolate.
3.9 Bottle - generous pour yields a medium mocha head. Nice chocolate mocha aroma with a little bit of coffee as well. Medium thick body and a rich mouthfeel. The alcohol is fairly hidden.
3.5 Entering from my scorecard after having sampled at the Big Texas Craft Brew Fest.
4.0 Tastes from on draft. Silky with a perfect amount of sweetness. A hint of malty bitter chocolate iced with cocoa and cream. Great!
3.4 Thick black pour, tan head. Sweet malty nose. Some chocolate burnt chocolate and roasted malts in the taste. Sweet finish.
3.9 Tap in 10oz snifter with commonmac at meddlesome moth in Dallas. Nearly black with very dark tan head. Sweet nose. Full bodied. Sweet, then roasted toffee, then chocolate, and finished with a coffee bitterness. Lots of complexity and layers. Some peatiness and lingering alcohol. Even if not my style, I respect this one.
2.5 (Thanks Dain "DrunkSanta410") Bottle. A- Bitter cocoa, subtle dark fruits, subtle licorice, roasty, subtle smoke, raisins, alcohol. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Bitter cocoa, licorice, very roasty, dry, malty, faint alcohol. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, dry finish. O- Not near as good as I hoped it to be. Very dry, very roasty, and mostly bitter bakers chocolate tasting. Pretty fresh so that probably played a role. A sipper for sure.
3.8 draft at M. Moth. good not great stout - strong aroma of roast - best quality. Taste had the roasted malt, coffee and maybe chocolate - roast was the main player here. would drink again.
3.8 Bottle shared by a friend. Pours darkest brown with a thin beige head. Aroma of malt, prune, smoke and roast. Malty and smoky flavor with some roast before a chocolatey finish.
3.5 Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a snifter. Black with very small light brown head. Aroma is roasty, thick body, low carbonation, and very little lacing. Taste is roasty malt, coffee, some herbal hops, some dark chocolate, and light herbal hop finish. Too heavy for me.
4.0 Bottle thanks to Matt. Mahogany with a deep brown head. Sweet roast, earthy and light chocolate. Smooth and almost meaty.
1.6 Had this beer on draft. Poured nicely for an imperial stout, 1/2" head persisted quite a while and there is lacing all the way down the glass. Aroma is typical of imperial stout but there is a distracting note of smoke and butterscotch. flavor is the same, nice roast character but the smoke and butterscotch distract from the beer. Mouthful is quite full with very low carbonation. I think the diacetyl (butterscotch flavor) and the fact that the serving temp of the beer is warmer than normal and the co2 is breaking out is contributing to the full mouthfeel. The underlying beer seems solid but the diacetyl and warm serving temp aren’t doing it justice.
4.0 Dark black with a light brown head. Sweet and roasty aroma with notes of chocolate, coffee and a little booze. Nice imperial stout.
3.6 Aroma of black licorice, coffee, spice, roast and booze. Pitch black, virtually non-existent ring of tan foam. Taste is charred yet a bit sweet in the finish with vanilla undertones. A bit creamy, no booze burn at all and none of the spices from the aroma. Flavor is great, palate is a bit lacking. A bit too carbonated for me. Overall well done.
3.4 Bottle. Black pour with a small head that fades to a very thin ring. Aromas burnt wood, light lactose, light chocolate and coffee. Tastes a bit harsh. Char and roast with some sweet chocolate milk and sweetened coffee. Not my favorite combo. Medium to full body. Nice full and creamy mouthfeel. Decent.
4.1 12 oz bottle at home. Pours black, brown head that quickly dissipates, A: Cocoa, toffee, faint licorice, faint fruity hints. T: smooth chocolate, vanilla, coffee with cream. Faint coffee notes with mild bitterness. Semi sweet, but not over the top. P: Heavy body, medium carbonation. This is a fantastic imperial stout, smooth with lots of flavor. On the sweeter side, but pulls it off. I’d like to see a barrel aged version.
3.8 The aroma is clean roasted barley, malts, grassy hops, and an afterthought of molasses. The mouthfeel is silky and smooth, with subtle carbonation and a medium-to-viscous body. The taste is roasted and hoppy bitter, with subtle chocolatey sweetness. The finish is dry, if a bit rushed. Straightforward and satisfying.
3.7 Pours a dark blackish brown that is opaque with a tan head. One finger head. Moderate lacing. Aromas of dark chocolate, dark fruit, espresso. roasted malt. Not a lot of hop character. Moderately bitter, hint of sweet. A bit boozy, but well balanced. Medium to full bodied. Chewy. Thick. Long, boozy and bitter finish. Good.
4.5 Must love porters. Interesting brew, definitely worth picking up as a craft brew nerd. Chocolate, coffee, and a touch of smoke come out of the beer as it warms up. Don't drink it straight from the fridge, best after 15 minutes hanging in a glass. Enjoy with chocolate or ice cream. - pixels sent via Beer Buddy on iOS
4.0 Pours a dark brown (black, really) with some dense brown foam. Aroma of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Taste is bittersweet chocolate. Very creamy. Bit of an alcohol burn on the finish. Great stuff.
3.7 Bottle pours black with generous brown head. Dark chocolate aroma. Flavor roast malts, molasses, ash. Slick full palate. Roasty finish.
3.9 Malty sweet aroma. Black with a dark tan head that sizzles away. Sticky toffee sweet with a roasty coffee background. Glassy smooth mouthfeel. Boozy warm finish. Really nice.
2.5 12 oz bottle from DQ. Poured into stout glass. Aroma of roasted malt with a hint of sweet. Appearance of used motor oil with thin light white head. Taste dominated by roasted notes then later dissapates to a sweeter note. Not what I expected from a Divine Reserve release; hopefully the other one I picked up ages gracefully in a year.
