Saint Arnold Weedwacker

Saint Arnold Weedwacker

The first release in our Moveable Yeast series, Weedwacker is the result of our pitching Lawnmower wort (wort is the unfermented beer) with Bavarian Hefeweizen yeast. Weedwacker will be available draft only. This is a study in how different yeasts have different effects on beers.

Note: As the base beer for this beer is a Kolsch, this beer will remain in the Kolsch style.

3.2 Rated based on notes taken 16 May 2014 -- highly drinkable brew, very spritzy. Malt base is sufficient. Good summer brew.
3.9 Pours clear golden yellow with a large white head. Smells malty with some hoppiness to back it up. Taste is malty, crisp, some bitterness. Light-bodied with a wet texture and average mouth-carbonation, Saint Arnold Weedwacker finishes with a soft grainy, malty sweetness.
1.1 Taste like a very dry Kölsch! tastes pretty close to Reissdorf Kolsch. I like lawn mower better though
3.0 12 oz. pours hazy gold with a sizzling-away head. Nose is clove, toast and lemon honey. Flavor is earthy honey with some spicy clove and banana dryness. Light-medium body has medium carbonation and a good balance. Not great, but amazing what an improvement the Bavarian yeast made to the base Lawnmower beer which I drank (and almost finished the whole 12 oz!) just prior to this one.
3.3 Pour on tap, slightly hazy golden pour with white head, aroma brought notes of grass, bread, dough into some white fruit, orange, some slight biscuit notes as well. Taste was a mix of dough, bread, hints of yeast into some fruit, vanilla, touch of spice, finishing fairly sweet, slightly dry.
2.6 12 FL. OZ. bottle. Mostly clear dull yellow, lasting thin white foam. Fruity yeasty biscuity aroma. Taste is quite fruity, Hefe yeast is somewhat overpowering, bready bland malts, some citrus. Soft carbonation, light-medium bodied, low hopped. An uneccessary hybrid. MLF (More Lagerboy Friendly)
2.7 Interresting beer (even more when you drink it expecting another experience!). The hefeweizen yeast on this beer has really done its job. Nice banana aroma and refreshing beer.
2.7 On tap at the brewery. Horrid kolsch ale with monstorous hefe bsnnana zombie yeast. Gmooha!
3.3 355ml twist off bottle. Pee gold with a fizzy quickly dissipating head. The aroma is tart with grain husk and a hint of sugar. Flavor has some banana and spice notes. Perhaps a large red kristalweizen? It drinks okay. Not like a koelsch but decent. Edit; upon entering my notes here I see it is indeed what I thought it was and on purpose, phew.
2.4 Dear brewer: If you are going to do wheat beer, do wheat beer. If you are going to do Kölsch, stick to Kölsch. Fails as a Kölsch (as does lawnmower) and is actually a run of the mill, watery wheat beer.
3.1 Rated on 02-18-2013 at Saint Arnold B.C. This draft beer has a small white head with a lengthy retention, transparent straw body, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is yeast, grainy, grassy, banana, spice, clove, and malt. The flavor is yeast, clove, spice, banana, sweet, and malt. The mouthfeel is smooth and dry. This beer is light-medium bodied. This beer is quaffable and a session beer. It has a nice flavor to it and is worth trying.
3.8 Crisp, super golden coloured body with a very slight haze to it, all with a single centimetre tall pure white head. Aroma of grass, hay, funk and a ton of yeast - more notes from that than anything, but a subtle banana smell as well on the finish - very nice. Light-bodied; Strong grassy and hay flavour at first with a large banana and clove freshness, some subtle white pepper and coriander seed freshness and a hint of light alcohol at the end. Aftertaste is very muted with the wheat, grass, yeast and banana flavours coming out by far the strongest, meanwhile a subtle sweetness and airy freshness finishes it off. Overall, a very nice refreshing summer beer that says kolsch but tastes like a well-balanced and more flavourful german hef. I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whip-In in Austin, Texas on 05-May-2014 for US$2,69 sampled at home in Washington on 18-October-2014.
4.1 I very much enjoyed this beer. The banana taste was very surprising and tastey. Some sediment in mine but nothing to be worried about. Had a good frothy head and very light to drink
3.5 Bottle, many thanks Radimd. Hazy orange yellow color with medium white head. Malt, oranges, wheat, yeast in aroma. taste, wheat, yeast, malt, oranges in taste. Fruity finish. Enjoyable summer beer.
2.0 Pours a golden color with white head. Yeast and cereal grain on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes dirty like the lawnmower.
3.4 Bottle. A- Wheat, grassy, bready. A- Golden color, clear liquid, white head. T- Subtle spice, yeasty, wheat, banana. P- Light body, average texture, high carbonation, smooth dry finish. O- At first sip, I though wow, this tastes more like a hefe than a kolsch, then I come here to read it uses Bavarian yeast. That would make sense. This beer is a great summer beer that is hard not to just chug instead of taking the time to enjoy it.
3.9 You’ve got to love a beer that’s self-aware. With a name like Weedwacker, you can expect that this brew is made with warm weather in mind. To that end, Weedwacker performs deftly. The straw-colored body and sudsy head create a sexy appearance. Aroma is soft but has lots of sweet grain notes. Flavor is straightforward but brilliantly executed. Smooth malt and subtle yeast at the start and bright, clean, crisp, grassy hops at the end. That finish makes the word "refreshing" seem inadequate. If you can manage not to chug this beer, you’ll be rewarded with a lot of perfectly-balanced malty awesomeness. On a hot summer day this sure beats (wacks?) the hell out of light beer.
3.8 Smell of light lemon citrus and banana. Appearance is gold with thin white head, taste is lemon banana light clove with good carbonation
4.8 Truly sweet and leafy. Has a lemon lime start and finish with leafy hoppy very slight bitterness. Perfect summer brew! I actually just finished mowing
3.3 bottle. Golden with small head. Light body with a hint of banana sweetness and some mild but crisp hops. Makes more sense to my tastebuds now that I see it’s a kolsch with hefe yeast.
3.4 Bottle - Sweet honey, lemon and a touch of banana. Hazy gold with a decent white head. Banana, honey and a touch of tartness in the finish. Not bad, bun nothing great.
3.2 This is my first kolsch so I have nothing to compare it to. My first impression is it's a little grape/winey, lemon, orange, wheat, viney. Not hoppy, not overly dry or sweet. Moderate mouthfeel, moderate carb. Overall very light and refreshing.
3.8 In comparison to the fancy lawnmower. The beer starts typical wheat-beer-like. Smooth, yeasty, some banana. The mainpart is fresh, smooth, slightly sweet and wheatbeerish. In the aftertaste long, intense yeasty, fresh and malty with a slight sweetness. Nice fresh beer! --> 12/12/12/12
3.1 Toned down Hefeweizen taste. Pretty good beer. Better than lawnmower. Will have again
3.3 D&Q Mini Mart, Houston 12oz bottle: Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is slightly bready, some light banana and a greater amount of citrus. Taste to me seemed more like a fruity blonde ale than it did a hefeweizen, so I depart from the general opinion on this page. Fruity, citrus, some banana, but not in that powerful way that you see in real hefeweizens. Nice and drinkable.
3.1 I don't care for the aroma. It is heavily carbonated with a fairly cloudy golden appearance, and a small head. Smooth to drink
3.2 (Backlog) 12 oz bottle. Cloudy look, light yellowish color, decent to thin white head. The smell is hay, banana, yeast, fruits, and some clove. The taste is much the same as the smell but more subtle. You get more of the kolsch feel in the feel and taste. Interesting beer.
3.3 12 ounce bottle. A big white head and a hazy golden beer under. Plenty of carbonation. This beer is gentle with soft fruit and yeast. Hops are quite light. Yeast is in front here. It offers both Kolsch and hefe notes. Fruit flavors grow with warmer temps. It finishes like a dry hefeweizen. I like this beer and it defies style.
2.8 Cloudy, golden-orange, with thin off-white head. Citrus, wheat, and mild floral aroma. Medium bodied, tart, tongue tingler, lasting bitter finish, ok balance.
3.1 The beer pours decently with a nice hazy straw color with an okay white head but very little lacing on the glass. The beer smells decently with good notes of orange, lemon, and mild corriander but not overly powerful or strong. The taste is okay with mild favors of citrus (ornage and lemon) and mild spices but very mildly. The mouthfeel is decent with a bitter aftertaste and okay carbonation. Overall, an average hefewizen, nothing spectacular that I cant get from a local brewer.
