2.0 No head, weak palate, bittersweet without any discernible flavors. Way too light to be what it says it is. This is what you would expect from a stout made in Texas, or any other hot weather climate for that matter. Pass.
3.2 Deep, dark brown, no head. Nose is dark roasted malt. Bittersweet. Middle is coco & molasses. Finish snaps dry, and rolls out slightly bitter.
3.5 Unknown brew/bottle date. A: Pours dark brown with cherry candy highlight thru the light. single finger loose latte head dissipates quickly and leaves a thin sheet of the same. No lacing. S: coffee, cocoa, prunes, fig, graham malts. Hints of resiny hops and what smells like over steeped simcoes. Nice creamy smell here as well. T: Coffee porter is what this tastes like, not stout. Nonetheless, good, malty, roasty profile with dark cocoa nibs, raisins. Good beer. M: medium body with medium/high carb. O: Well done, not great, but above average. If I were in Houston, and this was on tap, I would likely drink again. Serving type: bottle 03-24-2011
3.0 On tap at the Railroad Seafood Station Brewing Company. Not quite black pour, off-white head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee. It was a little lighter than most stouts, but otherwise very typical flavor. All in all, just average.
4.0 This is slightly atypical of a stout in several ways. The carbonation is a bit higher than I would expect and the body is lighter. The beer is not opaque, not even close. Overall, it seems like a delightful porter. The mouthfeel has a touch of chalkiness which I really like. There is a hint of mint and herbaceous character that adds complexity in an appealing way. I dinged the rating a bit because of the odd approach but I really like this beer.
3.5 Tap. Very dark with a big beige head. Subtle, but nice sweet and roasted malt aroma. Medium-full body and smooth mouth feel. Roasted and chocolaty tasting. Decent.
3.5 Draught. Pours a near black color with a small off-white head. Nose is a subtle little roasty, but still subtle. Not a huge amount of smell to it. Taste is much the same. It’s a decent stout, but nothing I’d actively seek out.
3.2 This bottled brew from the brewery poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized tan colored bubbles that were and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque dark black colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The nice aroma was sweet and dark malt. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The mild flavor contained notes of mild hops and dark malt. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.
3.7 Dark. Lots of toasted malt. Slight chocolate and coffee. Finish has toffee and caramel. Good stout by a good brewer.
3.3 Cask. Aroma is of sweet and dark malt. Appearance is black with a creamy light tan head. The taste starts sweet and turns into a dark dry flavor. Not very complex. The palate is dry and leaves a weird film in the mouth. Overall, an ok beer. Many better stouts out there.
3.2 Dark brown pour with medium tan head. A little bit of lacing. Roasty, chocolaty aroma. Similar flavors although coffee also comes through fairly classic stout flavors. ---Rated via iPhone
3.6 deep black beer with a refreshing feel to it. nothing but a session stout, which is rare these days
3.4 From the "really, I haven’t already rated this?" file. Dark and sweet with an almost delicate roastiness.
3.3 Dark brown color with light brown foam head, lacing to glass. Pitty it was served too cold. Aroma is coffee, with some nut tones. Taste is bitter coffee and nice velvet feeling. Somewhat short aftertaste. (Houston 201301)
3.3 Aroma of roasted meat, yes meat. Roasted malts with hints of chocolate and coffee. Pours a dark rich brown with a mostly diminishing tan head and no lacing. The taste is initially like the nose - roasty. Some coffee notes present in the middle with a grainy finish and aftertaste. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall, while not watery, I would have liked a little more body to be present. Stil,l this is an enjoyable Texas beer to look forward to each winter.
4.5 Clear black, slightly brownish around the edges, with a thin light khaki head. Delightful nose of chocolate, coffee, creaminess, and subtle roastiness. Flavor is equally incredible with creamy chocolatiness, a keen coffee tone, a slight bit of molasses and roastiness. Sweet and creamy but a little roasty and very full and well rounded.
2.4 Fruity soda like nose? Root beer? Slightly coying mid palate. 4th beer of the night. Not very exciting. ---That dog will hunt!
3.9 i have seen many other beers from this brewery , when i found this one i had to try it , coffe roasted taste - smell , good stout over all,,,
3.2 More than palatable little stout - not exactly a style to drink much of in Houston though!
3.0 I have always enjoyed this beer during the short time it is out. The unfortunate part about it is it always seems to give me heartburn. I have no idea why. It is on the lighter side as far as stouts go. Always nice to have around during Christmas.
3.6 Bottle. Black with a thin tan head. Roasted grain coffee and chocolate aroma and taste with a chocolate bread and caramel finish.
3.1 Solid little stout from this Houston brewery. better than average taste, a nice "go to" stout if you’re looking for something heavier than normal.
3.7 Nice dark bitter taste. Not as heavy as some stouts, but a very good beer to round out the evening.
3.1 Bottle. Trade from Jamil. The strong points of this winter stout was the palate, a thick creaminess, and the taste’s finish, bitter earthiness. The low point by far was the aroma, which was nonexistent. I tried several times in several manners to pick up some type of scent, but his thing was like the Preditor - nothing. Finally, I picked up a faint whiff of coffee/bitter. Overall, the appearance was pleasing, especially the nice film left by the head, and the taste was a nice complex mix of nuts, earthiness, and bitters.
3.2 Dark and a tan head. Some of the roasted and almost burnt malt taste is in there. Traditional coffee flavors and a burnt bitter finish. A good reliable stout brewed in Texas, but not outstanding.
3.6 quite a good stout and definitely my preferred brew from Saint Arnold. good mocha taste throughout and a nice touch of bitterness in the background to mellow out the sweetness some.
3.3 )............................................. ............................... Awesome
3.7 Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Smells of light chocolate and coffee, faint roastiness. Tastes of mild chocolate with hints of coffee balanced with a touch of bitterness. Light-bodied with a smooth texture and mild mouth-carbonation, Saint Arnold Winter Stout finishes with a hint of coffee-like bitterness but is overall not that impressive for a stout.
3.0 Pours dark brown with khaki head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is milk chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is roasted malt. Aftertaste is weak coffee. A liitle watery on the palate and on flavor.
2.5 On tap at the Petrol Station. Pours a clear deep brown with a gray head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is weak with a bit of dark grains and roasted malts. Flavor has notes of sweet bread with some dark grains with and a hint of roast.
