Saint Somewhere Pays du Soleil

Saint Somewhere Pays du Soleil

From our favorite Floridian brewery comes this Belgian-style dubbel. It’s rich and fruity, with some herbal flavors, and some funkiness thrown in for good measure. And, as always, somehow it’s reminiscent of it’s hometown of Tarpon Springs.

1.8 At lakehouse with Taylor, Tyler, Cynthia, and my mom. Pours dark hazy bronze with nice foamy head. Aroma is phenolic, Belgium fruit. Taste is overpowering thick Belgium phenolic notes. Yuck.
3.0 Very straightforward Belgian Ale. Thin on mouth feel, pleasantly sweet and very bubbly.
3.0 Bottle shared at the GTMW line, pours a murky brownish red with an off white head, the aroma is of prunes and dark fruit with a yeasty touch, flavor is much of the same, decent amount of dark fruit with a yeasty finish, kind of strange though and it doesn’t come together.
3.9 Great strong saison. Cloudy amber pour with foamy head and lacing. Coriander, raisin, prune. Some Belgian yeast. Finishes sweet with a light barrel note. Bottle thanks to ajax25g at Epic Sour Tasting.
3.7 From a bottle shared at the DC Epic Sour Beer Tasting. Pours a hazy brown with an off white head. Flavors of tart mixed fruit with some caramel. Tart finish.
3.2 Slightly cloudy orange brown. Nose is spicy, rustic, some fruit, odd petrol. Taste follows. Muddled as some others have said is a good word for this. Passable.
3.2 Pours hazy brown /red with big fluffy head. Nose is a lot of funky house yeast, raisin, fruit esters, dark fruits, brown sugar. Taste is a touch of berry and sweetness at the top, funk throughout, then it gets extremely dry, there's a flower planty kinda thing going on, and odd hibiscus kinda aftertaste that's also super dry, raw fusel alcohol flavor but not burn. I liked the nose, but it smells much fruited than it is. The taste leaves quite a bit to be desired. Sweetens a bit as it warms. I don't hate it, but not a big fan.
2.8 Bottle from the brewery. Shared with friends. Pours a reddish amber with a thin head. Aroma of lots of sweet fruits and yeasts. The taste was kind of a sweet mix of too many fruits. No real defined taste to it. Very muddled. Sorry...not for me.
3.0 Poured from a corked bottle. Deep red amber colored. Vigorous, loose head that dissipated quickly. Lots and lots of fruit characters in both aroma and taste. Otherwise somewhat dull. Its alright but not very remarkable.
3.4 750ml bottle, shared with robotopera post-CWBF. Mostly hazy dark red color. Airy, khaki head. Loose dots and ropes of lace. Dark fruit, raisin, spice aromas. Kind of like a spicy, herbal dubbed. Moderate sweet taste, kind of a spicy, herbal, peppery bite. Nice dark fruity berry aromas. Good light bitter herbal flavors, a light savoriness, nice light natural tartness. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter, kind of soft carbonation. Solid, interesting saison. Definitely get the berry and hibiscus in a solid, balanced way.
3.0 Bottle. Cloudy amber color. Really nice sour citrus aroma. Dry Belgian yeast and over the top carbonation.
3.7 750mL bottle about 2 years old. Aroma is surprisingly nice with moderate acidity, light fruit and faint phenolics. Fruit is citrus, tropical fruit, cherry and overripe apples. Not really any malt character. Moderate tannins compliment the acidity and fruit notes. Pours a copper orange with a thin, light tan head that quickly disappears. No lacing or legs. Flavor is moderately tart with a lot of cherry pie and pineapple. Some light fruit esters and low tannins. Malt character is washed out and unpleasant with stale cardboard and old toasted bread. Low bitterness and faint alcohol notes. Mouthfeel Is medium bodied with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall the aroma is very nice, but the flavor doesn’t match expectations. The flavor tastes like a beer that started out with a light acidity and a balanced Maly character, but the acidity had been increasing while the malt has faded. With more time maybe the malt fades completely, but with this amount of time its not great.
2.6 Bottle at Exira Beer Summit IV. Thanks to adnielsen for bringing the bottle. Pours a cloudy orangish borwn color with white head. Blueberry, floral, sweet aromas. Tangy, caramel, bitter, juniper flavors. Not a fan of this one.
3.2 Bottle @ Exira Beer Summit IV. Thanks to Dr. Owl for sending. Pours a cloudy, dark reddish orange appearance with a lasting cream colored. Somewhat floral, dark grape, berry, plum, a touch vinous, slight blueberry pie, a bit funky aroma. A bit tangy, tannic/woody, dark berry, light caramel, funky, grape flavor. Kind of twangy. Not my favorite.
4.3 Growler. Reviewed 09.13.11. Thick, dirty white head. Excellent CO2. Color of foam reminds me of a red ale. Body is cloudy, dark ruby red, yet glowing. Not the biggest sour beer drinker (a handful at most) but I can tell that is the style. A mild alcohol presence that is subdued with a pleasant sour fruit (raspberry) aroma. Taste like a juice made from dark fruits. Lingers with a beautiful combination of sweet malts and funky yeast. First time I’ve actually enjoyed this type of style to the extent of sticking with it and not reverting back to an IPA. Warm and exciting on my pallet, a lot of flavors I am not accustomed too. Taking a sip is like eating on raspberry, taste good but I want more. Take a big gulp and the flavor explodes. Body of a light malty red ale, alcohol feel of a mead, CO2 of champagne, and sour taste throughout. PDS is a perfect introdution beer for one looking to appreciate the sour-Belgian style. I am hooked and am looking forward to trying Jolly Pumpkin again when back home in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Great work from SS and I will definitely be a huge supporter of these guys from here and out.
3.7 Trade 2009 bottle. Almost knocked a piece of the ceiling loose when the cork rocketed off after being uncaged. Strangely enough no gushing beer though. really cool saison that starts true to style but then gains a ton of funk from the wild yeast. Very interesting and maybe a touch more on the sour side these days compared to the saison style. A little age did nothing to hurt this brew.
3.6 Pours a hazy golden brown on tap with bubbly off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is funky wild yeast that lends to phenolic esters when mixed with the darker malts. Taste follows, like a Belgian brown with even more funky barn house awesomeness.
3.5 750ml bottle pours a hazy copper orange with a large tab head. Citrus floral aroma. Citrus and fruit taste.
3.4 750 ml bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours a hazy amber color with a medium plus sized head. The aroma and flavor have bready malts, yeast, berries, earthy, floral (I’m not the biggest fan of hibiscus), some herbal notes. Dry with mild Brett notes.
3.5 Hazy amber colored pour. Small off-white head that falls fast. No lacing. Slight acetic note. Very slight. Some malt. Taste is a muted acetic flavor with some malt behind it. Pretty good. Finishes sweet and dry.
3.7 Rated in 2010 (Backlog) - Amber in color with a decent off-white head. Aroma is tart with some funk and fruit. taste is quite tart with hay and citrus.
3.6 August 2012. 750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Pours amber color with a white head. Caramel, spice and malt aromas. Citrus flavors and somewhat acidic.
3.6 Pours a hazy rust color with a finger or so of eggshell foam. Lots of funky fruit notes, sweet, tangy citrus, rustic grain hints of herbal tea. A strange brew for sure but enough balance between tartness, sweetness and rustic flavors to make it enjoyable.
3.5 Pours a hazy ruby color with a bubbly champagne-like off-white head. Tart fruit on the nose, cherries mostly, an herbaly kind of spiciness, sweet caramel note, and a small hint of brett funk. Lots of dark fruit on the taste as well, a bit of the saison and brett funk, kind of flowery and herbal, slightly peppery, and slightly tart. It’s pretty low carbonation, which I think hurts this beer a little bit. Not super complex, but still rather enjoyable.
3.8 Draught Pours basically an orange color with some head and some lacing on the glass. The aroma is tart fruit with plenty of floral notes... some funky sweat character and some mild cooking spice. Fairly inviting & pleasurable. The flavor is pleasant (i.e. not overbearing or intrusive) cooking spice with a good level of tartness (specifically more tart fruit than anything) & citrus. The beer is just lightly sour and pretty damned refreshing. There are some metallic notes that I could live without, but generally this beer does multiple reps.
3.5 750ml bottle, 2010 vintage. Aroma of dark honey, flowers, faint berry, biscuit, some doughy, bready yeast, mango, apricot, perhaps some faint clove in the background as well. Cloudy dark orange-amber color, head is utterly fading, and no lacing to speak of. Flavor profile is very gently tart, fruity, bittersweet, herbal and floral, some tropical fruit notes and sugar cane, with hints of cellar must and cobweb, and a touch of dried fruit towards the finish. Virtually no carbonation on the palate (but that’s okay, to be honest), with a lightly coating mouthfeel, body is fairly full. Interesting and tasty.
3.6 split with fiance 1 month celebration before wedding. Pours a dark deep cloudy honey amber with great carbonation to produce a big head with strong retention. Aromas(best part) of sour apple, cherry, fig, candied sugar, plum, and honey. Flavors of mellowed plumb, mellowed cherry, slight wood/oak impressions, and slight honey. Has a slight soapy feel, medium dry, slightly sweet, and complex mellowed flavors.
4.2 Burnt orange color with a considerable, long lasting head. Sweet, fruity aroma -- apples, white grape, fresh cherries, candy. Taste is simultaneously sweet and sour, somewhat sticky, like a less sweet sour cherry or cream soda. Pleasantly tart lingering aftertaste. Nice.
2.7 Bottle thanks to a trade. Pours a clear candied red apple color with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a sweet fruit (mainly red fruit) with a hint of flora and a bit of a earthy yeast note. Flavor has a very medicinal red fruit note with a bit of sweetness but overall a bit unpleasant.
2.7 bottle shared by derek. pors amber chestnut with a thick white heads thats breaks down to a thin foamy head thats lasts. nose is fermented raspberries and tart fruits that have ’turned.’ taste has some floral and pepper notes but generally tastes like what i imagine raspberries past their prime to taste like and even a little chlorine? not a fan.
