Samuel Adams Black Lager

Samuel Adams Black Lager

This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

4.4 Pours cola brown and settles in the glass with a black color. Creamy, khaki colored head of foam in top. Smells like a chocolate porter with some fig and caramel underneath.
3.5 Poured from 12oz bottle in the Sam Adams Fall Pack a near black with a short lasting tannish head. The aroma was of chocolate, carmel, and malt. The flavor is malt, yeast, and light chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium and very drinkable. The finish goes to the lingering chocolate and a touch of bitterness. Very nice to drink.
5.0 I am a Porter, Stouts, Dark lager drinker and honestly this beer is one of the best ones I've drink. I love that it is full body but it is malty and smooth. It is great with palate and it can be very refreshing as well. Over all one of my favorite beers I've had and I'm drinking a New Belgium 1554 Black Lager right now.
3.5 Smell is very light of darker malt...taste is a toasty malt, smooth with low diversity...but a good medium bold flavor...decent
3.9 From Sept 2005 Very nice Schwarzbier. Poured into a glass at just below room temp. Head dissipated fairly quickly, with just a fine lacing on the side. Pleasant smell of roastiness followed by excellent roasty flavour with hints of chocolate. Plenty of complexity and still a smooth drinker. A very good candidate for a session beer, imho.
3.2 Nice flavor beer. Not too heavy. Mild taste. Mild aroma. Light Stout. Nice dark color. Clean on the palatte
3.5 Oooh, a new style yay! It pours slightly opaque black with a thin head. The aroma is cocoa powder and smokiness. The taste is more chocolatey than smoky and it has a pleasant smooth palate. Overall pretty decent and a nice change of pace in a variety pack. Good for hanging out with the family, playing fun party games, and watching a particularly deranged Nathan for You.
3.4 An enjoyable light but roasty beer. Smooth, medium body. Super tasty and drinkable.
3.0 Not what I expected. When I saw the word Shwarzbier I was expecting a bitter coffee soy sauce taste like Guinness stout, but it's actually light, sweet and drinkable. Taste of toast and malt and slight taste of chocolate.
3.4 Bottle. It poured a cola color with a beige head that disipated quickly. The aroma is light cocoa with some smokiness. The tastes has a minimal amount of sweetness to it. Very drinkable.
3.6 Poured from the bottle. Thin white head. Black in color. Aroma is the only disappointment in this beer. Deep flavors that don't fill you up. I would definitely purchase and drink again.
3.2 Clean beer. Some chocolate and coffee with a mild bitter finish. Mix pack fodder but pretty tasty.
3.7 Deep Brown color with a small beige head. Caramel, roasted malt, vanilla in the aroma. Initial taste is bold and roasty with a hint of vanilla. Aftertaste has hints of coffee. Body is a smooth medium and carbonation is lively. The first Sam Adams in a sample pack that I've enjoyed in with a while!
3.5 (12oz bottle) AROMA: roasted malt, veggie/green, metallic, coffee APPEARANCE: dark dark brown, almost black, creamy tan head (almost stout-like), TASTE: soft roasted malt, mild chocolate and coffee, dried fruit/prune, PALATE: relatively full body, creamy/oily, round, soft, slow linger of bitterness and flavor. OVERALL: not bad, a very drinkable dark lager, well balanced, good body, not overly rich but chewy/yummy enough
3.9 My favorite from Sam Adams! Caramel is delicious. Also not too heavy on the hopping.
3.6 Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Hannaford. Appearance is dark brown/mahogany with nice sparkle, 1.5-finger width light brown head with fair retention and trace lacing. Aroma is roasted malts with chocolate. Taste is roasted malts, toffee, cocoa, earth. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thick texture, soft-to-average carbonation and bittersweet roasted malt finish. Overall, pretty true to the description. Good.
3.5 Heavy and bitter for a lager. Sone anise in the taste. Plenty of malt. A decent beer.
2.9 Bottle. Nice dark color With medium foamy mostly lasting head. lager/bread aroma. Nice and bitter flavor. good palate
3.5 bottle @ supermarket (denmark) dark colour, medium body, average carbonated, coffee and dark chocolate taste
Medium karbonering.
2.7 Great for cooking when poured over ribs, okay for drinking when poured into your mouth. Unknown for use in pouring into a toilet to clean the pipes, though probably not great for that.
3.4 Dark, roasty malt with a bit of cocoa, char, and dark fruit. Fairly balanced overall.
3.5 Sam Adam’s Black Lager, is well, black. The color is self-explanatory, I think. Things get interesting with the aroma, where I get a heavy pepper scent, conjuring images of teriyaki jerky. But on second examination there’s an even nicer, subtler and more complex touch of peat, adding a low, deep earthiness, thickening the aroma. The flavor is much maltier and simpler - more like your standard winter warmer. The aroma is where the interesting dimensions are, so linger here with your nose. The flavor, while fine, doesn’t live up to the aroma’s nuance.
3.9 Originally rated on 1/18/08. This is one of the better black lagers out there. It is a tiny bit spicey but sweet with hints of choclate and coffee.Has a nice finish to it. probably the best sam adams brew i have yet sampled.
4.0 Notes of caramel, chocolate, and licorice. Perfect appearance and foam for the style. Delicious taste, creamy and not over carbonated. Well balanced sweetness and bitterness.
3.3 LAGERS ARE HEVY TO DRINK AND EVEN HEAVYER THEN PLINY )ITS THE BEST) AND SPECHIAL OCCASHION BEERSAM ADAMS MAKES A GOOD LAGER. ITS LIKE COPORATE FACTORYS IN CHINA NOT RELLY. SOME FLAVERS OF FRUIT AND SPICE LIKE LAGERS. REMBER TO HAVE A EMPTY STOMACHE FOR THIS BIG BEERS.
3.5 This lager (although it is black and looks like a stout, it is therefore a lager!) Has a very nice, but brief, light brown foam. It smells very pleasant and sweet of hard roasted malt which does not allow much room for the subtle hop aroma. Furthermore, it smells a bit of English liquorice. It has a deep and protracted flavor of malt tones. Both the sweet caramel malt, but also the more savory malts which together provide a large richness in taste. Mouth feeling is creamy to bold and in the finale comes a gentle, yet sufficiently rich, hop bitterness. This beer lives completely up to its German roots and I really had also expected when it comes from one of the best microbreweries (in my opinion) in the US.
2.5 poured from a bottle. Very dark opaque hazelnut brown, thin an head with minimal lacing. Sweet roast and toffee in the nose with some earthy and grass also. Body has moderate carbonation and is slightly thin. A mild roasted malt flavor, slightly nutty and a faint pepper at the end.
4.8 A coffee colored black lager with low head. Aroma is caramel, malt, bisquit?, coffee. Taste is bitter.
