3.7December 24, 2014 - bottle from MGM. Brown pour with some head and minimal lacing. Aroma was fruity, caramel, yeast and some alcohol. Taste was dominated by the alcohol. There was some yeast / bread in the background throughout and the sweeness from the fruit and caramel came out in the finish with a sharp dry alcohol. Wish the alcohol was hidden a bit better and this would have been really good.
4.6nose: banana bread with pecans and all, rum, the yeast gets a bit sickly if you ponder too long.
palate: gorgeously textured. holy @#$%. liquid bread with thick gooey bubbles! too complex to even begin describing. all on the nutty bready caramelly alcoholly sweet side but oh so much more...and that’s my only complaint: it’s way too sweet for my taste. i feel like im gonna wake 5lbs heavier tomorrow. if you don’t mind then go for it.
3.4Sample at Strong Ale Festival 2014. Comes reddish brown with an average off-white head. Aroma of malt, fruit, and caramel. Taste is malt, dark fruit, and caramel. Lots of alcohol. Pretty good.
4.0On tap at Granite State on tap.
Deep brown with a smallish quickly dissipating off white head. Huge bready caramel raisin dried fruity maltiness with just a touch of alcohol and earthy hop to balance. Nice sipper that I need to spend a little more time getting to know.
3.6probably 4th best or so of the first10 DB’s i’ve tried...similar to Optimator, with a ever so slightly tighter carbonation for a lighter mouthfeel. very sweet and malty. solid effort."
3.8Draft. Dark ruby with decent khaki head. Full body. Alcohol is there and starts to get in the way. Fairly Thick bready malty. Caramel. Dark fruit. Something a little strange, or off putting or something I didn’t quite like that I couldn’t put my finger on. Solid.
3.8At GABF 2013. Pours bronze creamy head. Aroma is syrupy munich maltiness. Taste is sweet caramel, sweet interesting yeast note.
3.3Poured from bottle, pours a clear dark reddish brown with an off white head, aroma is a nice amount of sweetness and a good amount of caramel and dark sugar, the flavor has a dark caramel and sweet front end with a bitter finish, still balanced, not bad.
3.0at tasting, what stood out was the malty characters, toffee among other things. Decent.
1.6Ek! This would be SO MUCH BETTER if I didn’t taste only alcohol with every sip! Any delightful hint of malt is overrun entirely by the booziness of this brew. Huge letdown. Hardly drinkable.
3.0Draft to taster. Looks solid; a mostly transparent copper with off-white lacing. Smells semi-sweet and malty with notes of caramel. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel that’s medium-bodied. A little hot, but alright.
3.3Taster on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Clear dark red color. Thin ring of off-white head. Couple dots and bits of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, lighter carbonation. More dry finish. Dark fruit, caramel malt. Light bit of smoke. Some savory. Moderate sweet taste. Moderate bitter, too. Light spiciness. Decent american doppelbock. Good, thicker texture to it, which I enjoy... A nice, more full body. Solid.
3.7Sugary sweet malt dominates the aroma very slight fruit great finish no hops detected. Off-white to tan frothy long lasting head cloudy dark amber in color. Heavy malt presents with some old fruit sweetness. Alcohol content is noticeable as expected but not too overpowering. Mouth feel is medium bodied with slight carbonation and alcoholic warmth. Overall nice dominant malt flavor alcohol content comes through just a bit too much. Good smooth malt and sweetness to style mouth feel could be a bit fuller.
2.8Bottle, pours dark amber with a beige head, tastes of malt, dark fruits, and hint of cinnamon, okay doppelbock
1.8Dark ruby-brown. Very thick and heavy. Light bitterness. I don’t like the taste.
2.9Draft at Moriartys. Clear dark copper pour with a tight foamy white head. Wet lace. Lots of medium dark caramel malts. Some dark red fruit. Flavors are solid but feel thin and artificial. Feels forced. Lacking the character of traditional Double Bocks.
3.1bottle. mahogany with small head. big caramel malty body. mild bitterness. light booze. this is a style i’ve never liked, but this seems about par for the style.
3.3Bottle. Murky brown pour with an off white head. Big malty aromas. Rich caramel malt highlights with mild citrus undercurrents. Thick body. Average mouthfeel.
2.422oz bomber poured into a stemmed snifter. A very pungent, sweet caramel aroma comes through immediately and dominates the nose. The other aromas are more secondary, and even subtle, but they include butter, a damp, mildewy quality, some candy sugar, cake batter (briefly), sarsaparilla, cola, a bright, orange citrus, and toasted bread. If the sweet, buttery caramel weren’t so dominant, this would be a rather nice complex aroma. It pours a clear, yet dark, amber orange body with a soft yellow / brown head that retains nicely, and leaves a light lacing. This beer has a very potent, malty sweetness (high) with a light bitterness that mostly appears at the finish. The full bodied beer has an abundant, soft carbonation, with a creamy texture that has a sugary stickiness to it. The mouth is mostly buttery caramel with a sweet orange citrus, some cough drop, and a burnt toast bitter. The burnt toast, with some light grapefruit, finishes the drink and the fairly short aftertaste is that of oranges and cream.
3.712 oz bottle poured into a pint. The pour is a deep ruby with inklings of head and no lace. The aroma is really sweet. There is a lot of caramel malt on the front and light notes of dark fruits. Quite good. The flavor is just a little sweeter and carries the se notes through. I think it might be a little top sweet actually. The mouth feel is thin, and the aftertaste is overly sweet, and not the best.
3.5Dark red pour with cream color head that quickly dissipates. A lot of sweet caramel with a thick, malty body. Decent beer.
3.5Draft at br. Nice solid brew. Very nice. With lots of body. Try it you will like it.
3.6Pours a light brown with reddish hue. Appears to be clear. Minimal head that ends in single layer of bubbles. Spotty lace.
Strong, sweet caramel aromas. No hop.
Rich, thick beer, but there’s enough carbonation to prevent it from being too much. Lots of sweetness from malt sugars, but there is some hop to provide balance. The aftertaste is mostly caramel sweetness.
2.9@ Jungle Jims / Eastgate Clear ruby brown with a long-lasting 1" head, swirls of lace. Taste is oily very sweet malt that adds dark fruit, alcohol, and more sweet in the finish. Big, sipping only, but no balance at all, and a little overwhelming. I expected better.
3.4Bottle:
Pours cloudy, red-brown with a short, tan head.
Sweet, bready, toffee aroma.
Taste is thick, heavy dark bread....dark fruit.
Buttery, chocolate.
Very good.
3.59/12/2012. From bottle. Pours copper color with a tan head. Caramel, malt and toffee aromas. Sweet fruit, caramel, buttery with warm alcohol.
3.1Bottle pour dark copper amber. Nose dank malt, caramel, and toffee. Taste sweet malt. Slight metallic. Some vegetal. A little like cough syrup. Bitter on finish.
3.6On tap somewhere in the French Quarter (hard to keep track of all these spots). In my plastic cup it looks dark brown with a golden meniscus. Sweet caramel bready aroma with fruity undertones. Malty rich palate, bread crusts and brown sugar, sweet raisins. Quite sweet but very tasty.
3.4January 28th, 2012 - Boston Beer Companys’ Double Bock is a belgian dubbel disguised as a doppel bock. The aroma reminds me much more of the latter style, heavy with grape and cola notes on the nose, and a cloying sweetness that I’d expect from a semi-mass marketed dark beer (and especially one bundled in with other winter warmers.) And while the flavor shares this same clumsy malt-based sugariness, it also shares acute yeast notes, umami and a flavor that makes me think they brewed this beer with a couple rinds of parmesan cheese floating in the wort. Whatever the manufacturing process, the flavor is a bit of a surprise, and while it’s not match for a right and proper dubbel, it does make this one of the more desirable beers out of the Winter seasonal box.
3.3Mahogany color with rich, creamy head. Scent of spices and caramel. Nice roasted flavor and lingering caramel with a strong alcohol finish.
