Samuel Adams James Madison Dark Wheat Ale

Samuel Adams James Madison Dark Wheat Ale

Unfiltered and hazy, this deep mahogany brew pours with a dense creamy head. The slight tartness of malted rye is balanced with sweeter roasted malted barley notes of cocoa and toffee. Malted barley, hand roasted by our brewers, adds a subtle smoky finish reminiscent of colonial brewing.

2.8 Bottle. Hazy unfiltered brown pour. Nice lacing. Slight wheat taste but is overpowered nicely by a caramel kick. Probably one of the better offerings from this collection.
2.9 Bottled. Lightly hazy amber. Rich cocoa aroma. Medium sweet with fairly clean mouthfeel and medium body. Caramel and toffee is there. Mild and malty.
2.9 Coca Cola clor lis bits of yeast and slightly tan head. The aroma of wheat and toasted malt, nuts and hints of floral. The taste is wheat malt and citrus. The finis is smooth and slightly bitter.
3.3 My favorite from this collection. Caramel and malt with a slight sweet wheatiness. Very enjoyable.
2.6 brown unfiltered pour with small beige head. Nose is primarily wheat with malts and chocolate and a nice caramel kick. Flavor is roasted malt with some nice off but nice chocolate. Not bad, but not the greatest.
3.1 12 oz. bottle from BevMo, consumed fresh just after release in summer 2006. Pours cloudy brown with orange hightlights and a thick beige head that leaves ample lace. Aroma is wheaty sweet and also a bit sour, like a dark brown sourdough bread, hints of dark fruits, some roastiness and herbal notes. Sweet and roasty, fruity and yeasty, with lots of wheat, floral and herbal flavors with a hint of citrus in the finish. Medium to ful body, fairly still, with little carbonation. Like most of these special series SA brews, I enjoyed the smelling and sniffing more than the actual drinking.
3.2 Dark brown - a little red. The nose is of toffee. Coffee, cocoa and malty in flavor. The best of the old school four pack.
3.0 Off notes from 10/06. Pours a cloudy dark amber with minimal head and good lacing. Malt slightly on the nose.Taste is thicker, but does not stick around long. You get tones of sweet malts, but they do not linger at all. Smooth on the mouth with a slightly bubbly edge to it. I am editing my scores now as I continue trying to drink this one. I think this one might get dumped too. Might be worth trying once, but not worth going back to.
3.2 Bottle: Brownish in color, quite muddy, moderate off-white foamy head, settles quickly, a few rings of lacing.   Hearty nose of malted wheat, lightly toasted, minor dark fruit skin.   Pale malts on the tongue, somewhat wheaty, a little hearty like whole wheat bread.   Minor sweetness, and a little of that dark fruit skin I had on the nose.   Moderate body, mouthfeel is a bit bubbley.   Very slight ash is present.   Clean finish, albeit somewhat quick.   Not a big Dunkleweizen, but fairly decent.   It could stand to be a bit more robust, but as is I thought it was fairly good.
3.0 Name: James Madison Dark Wheat Ale Date: 10/24/2006 Mode: Bottle Source: Green’s, Atlanta muddy brown, whispy beige head, stripes of lace, sweet candy carmel malt aroma, nice sweet chocolate and carmel malt flavor, light earthy bitterness, easy light drinking with good sweet chocolate flavor Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 5/10; Overall: 11/20 Rating: 3/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: **/4
2.6 12 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy orange with a lacing head. Slight sweet caramel malty aroma. Sweet and bitter slight harsh malty flavour. Different brew. Dry malty slight roasted and bitter finish. Label claims the use of hand-smoked malted barley? Not in my palate.
2.9 (Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of yespr. Pours a hazy, dark amber golden with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel and overripe fruit. Medium-bodied, again these notes of overripe fruit, a whiff of yeast and an edge of....sherry! The finish is dry with a very discreet bitterness. I doubt a German would recognize this as a Dunkelweizen. 180807
3.4 12oz Bottle. chestnut color, with a moderate sized beige head. sweet, wheat aroma with notes of banana, spice and caramel. Flavor is unique; wheat, chocolate, herbs and a little smoke. Very drinkable. I was pleasantly surprised with this beer.
3.2 Translucent caramel brown color, Starts malty and light bodied, light molasses, maple, with sassafras at the finish. Not much of an aroma. Soft and smooth on the palate.
3.4 12 oz bottle. Poured a clear light brown color with orange highlights. Head was thick and off white with good retention and lacing. Aroma was of light molasses, dried fall leaves (in a good sense), and a touch of chocolate. At times there was also an estery note. Medium bodied. I enjoyed this one.
2.6 My least favorite of the four pack. amber color with plenty of head. Wheaty nose a hodgepodge of not aromas that don’t really work well together. Thick what body with similar funky flavors hanging around.
2.9 A dark copper ale with a thick light moka head. A grainy malt aroma with notes of caramel, and light bananas. In mouth, a clean crisp malt, with notes of maple, light coffee, and a bit of pit, not very smokey. Lighter bodied and a bit short. Bought in Oswego, Nov. 2006.
3.1 Bottle sampled on 3/3/07: Pours a dark copper orange with a nicely-lacing off-white head. Aroma of slightly toasty, dry, grainy wheat with a touch of milk chocolate. Body starts with a touch of caramel maltiness with some grainy wheat and toasty notes toward a thinner bittersweet finish.
3.4 12 oz. bottle- color of medium mahogany , with a thick white head - nose of bread , malt , sweet , roasted , chocolate , and hints of raspberries – taste of bread , malts , and blue / raspberries - body is medium acidic , low viscosity , and with high carbonation – aftertaste of chocolate , malts , sweet , and watery
3.0 12oz bottle. Bottle labeled BB Oct ’06 (damn, and I just bought this from the store 2 weeks ago). Poured a deep and murky/muddy amber color with a larger sized off white head. Aromas of wheat, bananas, and a trace of spices. Tastes of wheat, caramel, toffee, chocolate, and a hint of bananas.
2.9 Bottle pours a murky maple syrup color with moderate sustained off white head. Slightly toasty nose with some spicey, burnt sugar notes. Dunkelweizen flavors, lightly sour malts and soft carbonation. Pretty accurate to style I would think.
2.9 Pours a four finger light tan head that fades to a ring leaving some lace. Cloudy amber color. Light carbonation and light bodied. Wheat/malty nose. Flavor has sweetness from the malt and there is wheat and yeast coming through as well. $9.99 - 4-pak, 12oz bottle from Shaw’s Supermarket Concord, NH.
3.3 Poured a hazy amber color with a small creamy off-white head. The aroma was big sweet and malty. Good notes of caramel, dried dark fruits, apples and raisins. The flavor is on the bland side after a nice aroma.. Mild wheaty lemon notes. Some maltiness...dull. Light to medium bodied.
2.7 12oz. burnt amber/mahogany haze with an admirable foamy head; reveals a nice lacing. pleasant aromas of ripe citrus, lemon peel, subtle spice, and caramel malts. tastes like a hefe, but with a certain nougat-caramel thickness to it. thus, "dark wheat beer". could use more spice/hops/tingly mouthfeel, but it’s alright. the finish was a tad thin, but no harm no foul. a good attempt by boston brew co.
2.9 Bottle from UncleMattie! Nose of yeast, bananas, caramel, and alcohol; hazy brown with a small beige head; roasted malt, tartness, and a touch of molasses in the flavor.Watery body, OK but not that good.
1.8 this wasnt the best out of the four pack of "old school" ales. interesting brew but leaves much to be desired.
1.8 bottle . . pours deep cloudy brown with BIG white head . aroma is malty, alcohol . . not much aroma . . tastes roasted malts, but pretty watery . . not much here . . eh!
2.7 This was the second best in the pack. It pours a cloudy white color, then settles a light brown with an average, creamy light brown head. Good lacing behind a fully diminishing head. Murky body. Aroma is of light malts. Not much of an aroma, but doesn’t smell bad. Initial taste is a light bitter, finishing a light sweet with average duration. We were expecting something pleasant from the aroma, and we didn’t get it. The taste let us down too. Light to medium on the palate, it feels watery and has soft carbonation. Comments: nothing stands out in the taste or the aroma, wow! look at the head. Reviewed on September 14th, 2006.
1.4 Pours cloudy copper color. Unfiltered. Very weak taste. Rather drink pbr instead.
2.3 Pours a cloudy orange.tatses of wheat and malt but nothing here stands out.Mediocre at best
