Samuel Adams LongShot Boysenberry Wheat

Samuel Adams LongShot Boysenberry Wheat

Created by Ken Smith, Colorado. Ken describes his brew as having "a refreshing light taste and cereal crispness from the wheat malt." This unfiltered ale has a rich, fresh fruitiness balanced by a citrus note from the Noble hops.

3.4 Found a six pack of the Samuel Adams 2006 AHC at Warehouse Liquors in Duluth, Minnesota. Pours a semi-hazy golden yellow brew with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates to a fine film and ring. Aroma of light multi-grain malt with boysenberry syrup that reminds me of the kind they have at the local IHOP. Taste is medium bodied, light carbonation with flavors of light multi-grain malt, some grassy hops and plenty of semi-tart boysenberry flavors. Finish is semi-sweet with an aftertaste that is quite balanced with tart berry and light grain malt flavors. One year aging still retained some of its flavor and character.
3.0 Bottle courtesy of ford9719. Thanks! Pours a rich golden orange color with a nice white lasting head in a weizen glass. Smell is very strong boysenberry, and quite sweet like candy or jam. Nice at first, then even the nose becomes overly sweet. Taste is thinner and milder than the smell. Still some dull boysenberry flavor, and sweetness, but fairly bland with some wheat coming through as well. Average body and carbonation, but could use some more umpf. Decent, but got too be too much by the end of the bottle.
4.0 Feb. 2007 - I only bought this because I had to to get the other "Long Shot" beers. What a surprise! I normally hate fruity beers, but this was almost perfect. Pour was hazy golden yellow, smallish head, but well sustained and excellent lacing. Aroma was strong boysenberry. Flavor was boysenberry, but not that sweet with mild wheat base and a crisp lagerish bitter finish. Very good...one if not my favorite fruit beer. Excellent!
2.7 2-13-08 bottle Cloudy orange with white head and lacing. Smells very sweet and similar to bosenberry puree or like a bosenberry pie. The smell is overwhelmingly sweet by the end of the beer and not very pleasant. Decent sweet flavor - but also becomes a bit too much by the end. Palate is pretty average - nothing too special here. I am just not a fan of fruity beers.
3.0 12 oz. bottle. Not a big fan of wheat beers, as a whole, but exploring to expand my palate. Intense sweet aroma of berries and slight hint of biscuit. Pours slightly hazy yellow with less than one finger of thin white crown - low retention and little lacing. Flavour initially hits with sweet and tart berries with a strong wheat malt backbone and finishes with a crisp wheaty aftertaste. Spritely carbonated and refreshing to drink, if weizens are your thing. I think I would enjoy it more if I were attuned to wheat beers. Overall a decent beer and my first experience with boyzenberry in a beer, but nothing that I’d order at a restaurant.
2.2 Tart berries on the nose, blackberry, strawberry, boysenberry, candied apple. Pours blonde with a thin white head. Boysenberry, candy, pixie stix, cough syrup, not very good.
3.2 12 oz bottle. Poured a hazy yellow orange color. Head was thin and white. Attractive aroma of fresh berries, peaches, and pancakes. Dry with tart berry and malty cereal grain. Kind of medicinal at the end, but decent overall. I didn’t notice any noble hops.
4.2 Has an aroma of vanilla and raspberry. This is by far my favorite of the longshots this year. So tasty and flavorful, this beer makes me happy to be an american.
3.7 Consumed 12-13-07. Golden, white head. Nice boysenberry/bluebeery aroma up front, slight bready character in the background. Flavor much the same. Hard to imagine them using real berries, but doesn’t really taste extract-like. Crisp and refreshing. Sessionable crossover, P.D. of a beer. Really not as bad as average suggests.
3.0 From my tasting notes. 12 oz bottle. Cloudy orange with a white head. Very fruity aroma, I’m not sure what boysenberries smell like, but it was a berry aroma. Flavor is sweet berries and malt. Not bad. Good summer brew.
2.6 Copying from my tasting notes. Bottle. CLoudy orange pour with a small white head. Lots of fruit in the aroma. Strong berry flavor and malt. Too sweet for me.
3.3 Courtesy of Quake1028. Pours cloudy gold with orange hue. There is also a thin white head. The aroma is big with loads of boysenberries, some peach and a mild floral note. The flavor is strong with berry extract syrup, vague sugary malt sweetness, faint wheat and more sugar. The taste ends sweet with sugar and residual berry extract. It just doesn’t smell or taste like boysenberry fruit but rather a sugary extract.
3.5 Thanks to unclejedi for the bottle. Been wanting to try this one for a very long time since FL sucks and didn’t get these beers. Peach colored body with a very small, vanishing white head. Boysenberry fills the area as soon as the beer is poured. This is some good smelling stuff. Also hints of apricot, sour peaches, sweet grains and malts. No wheat apparent in the nose. Don’t really get much hops either. The wheat shows up in the flavor, along with the fruit notes, but much less sweet than the aroma. Kind of drying actually on the tongue. Medium bodied, lively carbonation. Finish is wheats and fruit, medium length and pleasing. Good beer, underrated IMO.
3.6 The beer parts company with the 12 ounce bottle a slightly hazy golden yellow with a majestic creamy crown of white, as it settles, the lacing forms a tight skirt around the glass. Nose is sweet with malt and the berries provide a candy like backing, fresh and pleasing to the senses, start has a decent malt profile, with the over ripe fruit sweetness a pleasing plus, top is light to moderate in feel. Finish continues the sweetness, the hops light but pleasing, the aftertaste dry, and a fine drinking beer, different, but a pleasure to sample.
2.8 Uck. Tasted like typical crappy fruit beers--like drinking the milk after a bowl of fruit loops. The worst part is the watery-ness. Insubstantial.
3.0 Poured a hazy orange color with a medium sized, creamy, off white head, that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet berries, vanilla, not much else, but it doesn’t seem artificial... Taste of boysenberries and wheat, some cereal, vanilla, and toffee malt. Not terribly bad, not super exciting, probably should have had this cold in the summer.
2.8 12oz bottle-pours a big creamy off white head and cloudy gold color. Aroma is fruity-boysenberry. Taste is sweet, fruity, boysenberry, creamy wheat, then an unexpected and unpleasant sharpness. OK carbonation.
3.5 Off notes from 4/2007. I am actually pretty excited to finally have gotten my hands on the Long Shot series. This is the first bottle I tried. Pours a slightly fogged gold with an amber touch. Almost no head. Nose is basically all berries, but not overpowering in how it comes across. There is also a bit of a floral aspect to it as well. Flavor is kind of interesting really. There is a definite presence of berries, but less so of the wheat character. There is also what I want to describe as a soapy character to the flavor pattern as well. Feel is nice and smooth. Fairly thin on the liquid feel, but not watery by any means. Drinkable, yes. Very well crafted, but seems a bit off balance with the berries. I am very glad to be able to have tried it! Kudos to Ken Smith and the Boston Beer Company.
1.7 Beer pours nice enough being slightly cloudy, golden color with a well retained egg white head. Aroma is sweet, fruity, maybe blueberry aroma. Flavor was nasty. Maybe my bottle is out of date, however, this beer was sickly sweet with a flavor like someone slipped some urp into my glass. Down the drain she goes!
2.7 Name: Longshot Boysenberry Wheat Date: March 14, 2007 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting Appearance: hazy dark yellow, wispy white head Aroma: big sweet fruity aroma that arrives before you pick up the glass Flavor: sweet fruit flavor but not as sweet as as the aroma indicates Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 6/10; Flavor: 5/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 10/20 Rating: 2.7/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: *4
3.7 Poured see through yellow with white head. Strong aroma of berries and wheat. Kind of smelled like Captain Crunch Crunch Berries. Haha. Nice refreshing flavor of berries.
2.0 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a large sized head of foamy finely sized bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a transparent softly carbonated orange colored body. The aroma was malty and fruity. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of malt and fruity. Not one that I would likely buy again.
2.8 Again, just not my thing. Cloudy hazy wheat body with slight pinkish notes, small white head. Nose of fruit fruit fruit. Taste of fruit and slightly citrus wheat with classic hops in the finish. One is more than enough.
3.6 Pours a nice yellow color with a white head. Boysenberry sweetness dominates the aroma.Nice sweet fruit flavor followed by a hint of wheat malt. Nicely balanced for a fruit beer.
3.5 Bottle, BB June ’07. Poured a very slightly hazy medium golden with a nice little cap of white head and lots of rising carbonation. The aroma took me back to Fruit Roll-ups as a kid, which I loved.. sweet mixed berries over a mild wheaty tartness. Flavor had a tart, citrusy foray onto the palate with grainy cereal and berries washing nicely over the tongue (Crunchberries with a shot of alcohol, anyone?).. tasty stuff! Lighter-bodied and a bit too grainy on the palate at times.. mild tartness played well.. refreshing. This is one that I would re-visit. Prost, Mr. Smith!
3.2 bottle: a slightly cloudy golden colour with a very large white fluffy head. aroma slaps you in the face with fresh berries very very sweet. flavour is not as berry as youwould think from th enose, but is defenitly there with some wheat. it is a little thin and watery.
3.3 rating from notes: in a mixed pack of beer, poured golden in color with pretty good carbination and lacing. smell is berries, malts and sweetness. taste is definitely berries, malts, and good carbination. has a good fruit flavor not too artificial, smooth taste.
3.4 12 oz. brown, longneck bottle. Best before June 2007? Poured out a clear golden yellow color, with a thin tan colored head. Aromas are of berries, definitely. Slight malt aromas as well. Flavors are of berries mostly. Perfume sweetness dominate the flavors. Finishes sweet. Decent mouthfeel, medium body. Best fruit beer I’ve had to date.
2.3 Bottle. Small white head that mostly diminished, lacked any real amount of lacing, transparent, golden hue, and visible carbonation. Nose was very, very sweet, berries, citrus, and sour. Flavor was tart, sweet, berries, citrus and dry finish. Mouthfeel was slightly tingly and dry. Light body. Sickingly sweet IMMHO. Too much berry flavor.
