Samuel Adams LongShot Dortmunder Style Export

Bruce describes his classic German-style lager as "pale gold in color with a blend of Pilsner maltiness and a mild hops aroma. The bitterness is just enough to balance the taste of the malt."
Bruce is a former music teacher who began homebrewing 13 years ago when his wife gave him a kit for Christmas. He has since become an accomplished homebrewer and shares his knowledge and passion for beer by teaching classes in homebrewing and beer appreciation.

3.6 Mar. 2007 - Golden yellow pour, clear with a slight haze, nice head and lacing. Aroma was grassy hops and butter. Flavor was sweet buttery cheesey flavor, like cheese left out a bit too long, with a grassy hop bitter finish. Rich full flavor and mouthfeel. Pretty good.
3.2 Not bad. Wasn’t too impressed. I think I make a beter Dortmunder style beer.
2.4 12 oz. bottle. Aroma is full of sweet malt, yeast, and mild bittering hops - nothing too characteristic. Pours golden with a moderate finger worth of white crown with low retention and lacing. Flavour is fairly balanced between biscuit and malt, and hops. Palate is medium-bodied, moderately carbonated with a rather bitter and yeasty finish. Overall a decent beer but nothing too characteristic. Tastes almost like it smells and although it might be close to style, it’s still my least favourite out of the LongShot pack.
3.4 The weakest of the three beers this year, but that does not mean it is a bad beer. Bitter and sour taste; a refreshing beer that would be better served in summer. But who can wait that long?
3.6 Very slightly hazy golden coloured body with a nice dense off-white coloured head. Very nice looking beer! Aroma of fresh malt, lemons, yeast, pears and a bit of fresh hops - really nice as well! Medium-bodied; Strong malt backbone - more than you’d expect, plus a potent hop flavour up front shows well. Aftertaste is oddly chewy, with yeast and wheat more noticeable than anything else. Sweetness lingers on the palate - but not overpowering. Overall, a decent beer - I think I liked this better than most, but there isn’t anything necessarily wrong with this offering. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from the six-pack sampler, drunk on 18-Dec-07.
2.9 12oz bottle-pours a foamy white head and hazy yellow color. Aroma is light-malt, grain, secondary citrus/herbal hops. Taste is light-malt, grain, secondary citrus/herbal/spicy hops. OK carbonation. Slight syrupy yet semi-dry mouth feel.
3.0 Copying from my tasting notes. Bottle. Golden pour with small head. Malty aroma. Nice taste that finished well. Not bad
3.5 Courtesy of Quake1028. It pours a clear deep gold or pale copper with thin off white head. The aroma is malty, pale malts and grains. The flavor is nice with pale to grainy malts and some malt sweetness. Very nice flavor mixture, some Munich too maybe. It seems a little too sweet as the taste moves forward but the grainy and pale malt flavors even things out.
3.3 Thanks to unclejedi for the bottle. Been wanting to try this one for a very long time since FL sucks and didn’t get these beers. Golden amber pour, no head, just some loosely collected bubbles and foam. At first I get a big whif if skunky, funked hops, but that goes away very quickly. What’s left is pleasing - sweet crystal malts, grains, citrus hops. Flavor could stand to be a bit more concentrated, but it’s not bad by any means. Citrus malty notes and a pleasing bitter kick. Finish is sweet folding into slight bitterness. Very nice, not as good as the Boysenberry but again a bit underrated I think.
4.0 Upon the pour from the 12 ounce bottle it displays a clear gold, a creamy white head piles on top of the body, with its eventual demise, the lace forms a velum like coating upon the glass. Nose has delectable malt sweetness, citrus line in its crispness, hops also make an appearance with a flowery tones, start has a rich malt profile, sweet with the hops providing a bit of “Twang” at the back. Finish has a spirited acidity, the hops deliciously spicy, aftertaste dry, and a “marvelous” beer overall.
2.8 12 oz bottle. Hazy dark yellow with a nice white head. Smells malty but the taste is more balanced. A clean finish with a little bit of bitterness. Very drinkable.
3.3 Pretty drinkable, but not very memorable. Malt, caramel, not much hops. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Not offensive, but nothing I’d write home about.
2.9 Name: Longshot Dortmunder Export Date: 03/14/2007 Mode: Bottle Source: Tasting hazy dark yellow, wispy white head, sweet malt aroma with a hint of corn, sweet malt flavor, good caramel sweetness, light balancing hops leaves a light bitter finish, Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 6/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 11/20 Rating: 2.9/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: **/4
2.6 Golden color. Smell of malt, hops, minor fruit, bread and wheat. Taste of the same and also tart. Taste of more fruit and a touch of honey also.
3.7 Poured a nice golden yellow color with a nice white head.Very grainey, malt aroma.Sweet grainey flavor with a touch of hop bite.Nice bitter ending to it as well.
3.0 Poured see through yellow with white head. Aroma of some fruit and hops. Taste was crisp and refreshing but very light. Hops and a sweet malt flavor present but minimal.
3.6 this beer is a clear winner! does not smell like much...but the tase is complex and the body and carbonation is nice. there is a chalkiness to the finish that could use a little work, but man i like this beer. all good mildly fruity flavor and perfectly moderate carbonation. nice hop profile throughout the taste. stingy german with the american style hop resiny flowery piney touch. you’re wife did us all a favor! just touch sweet, fruity hoppy with a nice mild malt body this pale is different and good. lasting finish that you don’t mind having around.
2.7 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy with a frothy top white colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a transparent softly carbonated golden brown colored body. The mild aroma was malty dough and grassy. The mouth feel was very tingly at the start and at the finish. The flavor contained notes of malt hops sweet and mildly vinous. A decent one that I would consider buying again.
2.8 Pretty average stuff. Beautiful golden pour, crystal clear, with huge soapy head. Simple flavor, sweet malts, floral hops, bitter finish. Average mouthfeel, about right for a Dortmunder export.
2.8 Bottle from HEB. Pours golden yellow with an off-white head. Tastes of slightly stale bread and dry malt. Slight hop bitterness, no real bite. Finishes with a slight sweet tinge. This beer is not hitting well with me for the style, but maybe I’ve had too many helles in Deutschland.
3.1 rating from notes: from a mixed pack’ pours a creamy golden in color with smells of yeasts some floral hops, and sweetness. taste is thick, some caramel sweetness, flowers, yeasts, and citrus. a well done beer but not my favorite from the three.
3.0 Translucent goldenrod in color with a beautiful, creamy orange tinted head that smothers the top. The aroma catapults out of the glass, with golden corn chex, starch, sweetened corn flakes, a touch of rutabaga skin and a hint of minerals. Flavor comes in dryer and more bitter than expected. A starchy, mineral like baguette fills in the gaps with a little too much baking powder. The creamy head lapses in but the flavor behind it sings starch, toasted potato crisps and laundry flavored cornmeal. Dryer and creamier and more bitter than you bargain for, ringing like maize filled in with semi-sweetened oat flakes in the end.
4.4 This offering from the SA longshot series pours a clear golden color leaving a frothy white head that is thick and sticks to the glass. The aroma is very inviting, golden raisins, honey, wheat, faint bready aroma, crisp grass notes. The taste is wonderful, honey, malty biscuit, floural, raisins, this is a great beer. The the feeling on the palate is crisp, refreshing, dry but mouth watery if that makes sense. The finish is faintly hot and spicy but goes down very smooth. Another winner from the Longshot 6 pack!
2.8 xxx not my favorite of the longshot beers, it was alright, drinkabnle, but nothing great
2.6 Courtesy of Styles Bottle: Lots of pale lager aromas with a hint of citrus, fruit, and grassy hops. It pours a transparent golden-orange with a small white head. The flavor starts with sweet Euro-lager flavors with some very faint caramel. Moderate grassy bitter finish.
3.0 Beer pours an attractive slightly cloudy gold color with a nice fluffy egg white head. Aroma is dried grassy hops with a small sweet aroma and malt. Flavor is initially sweet, then hoppy then finishes with a bit of cloying sweetness that is out of place. A decent beer.
3.0 Pale gold with whispy white head. Grainy nose with similar body. Bottle might have been on the end of its shelf life, because there was the faintest unpleasant hint in the overall solid flavor.
3.0 Straw color; small, white head; tiny, lively bubbles. Aroma of bready malt, light apple juice; barely grassy. Flavor is bready malts; light caramel; surprisingly and perhaps inappropriately hoppy. Medium-light body; slightly sticky. Hoppier than I would like, but drinkable.
3.9 Let’s get one thing straight, folks, I am a Dortmunder Export Snob. Its a bold statement, I know, but I just want everyone to know I won’t be pulling any punches on this review. Appearance: Pours a bright, sparkling golden body topped by a fluffy white head. Smell: Pleasing aroma of biscuits, with a drizzle of honey and fresh-cut flowers. and a gentle hoppiness. Maybe even a pat or two or butter! Taste: Light malty sweetness with hints of bread and honey. A fruity/floral twang develops just as the hops pop. Hey, is anyone else picking up a pinch of sea salt? Huh. Plenty of residual yeast flavors in the lightly bitter, lightly sweet finish. Mouthfeel: Thin-bodied, with a sticky mouthfeel. Lightly carbonated. Drinkability: A easy-drinking, splendid little lager! I quite enjoyed it.
