Samuel Adams LongShot Lemon Pepper Saison

Samuel Adams LongShot Lemon Pepper Saison

Jeremy White, who works in the IT department at Samuel Adams, channeled his love of Belgian beers to create his Lemon Pepper Saison, a classic Belgian-style brew. Jeremy’s flavorful, refreshing and lighter-bodied beer is brewed with Grains of Paradise, an exotic tropical spice also found in Samuel Adams Summer Ale. The peppery flavor is complemented by a slightly sweet aroma with hints of vanilla and citrus, making this beer the perfect cool down to a hot summer day.

3.5 bottle - Pours hazy gold with a lingering white head. It smells of yeast, lemon, and pepper. The flavor is lightly sweet with citrus and spice notes. It’s crisp and bubbly, an easy drinking brew that finishes with a touch of dryness. I enjoyed it.
3.2 Upfront, the aroma is bubble gum, lemon, spicy, wheat. The appearance is a hazy yellow, orange tinge, white head. The flavor is lemon, yeasty, spicy, wheat/cereal grain. Medium, almost thin in body. The finish is bubble gum sweet, with a light hop bittering, and some (very light) piney hops. Really not bad at all.
4.0 Pours cloudy amber with a whte head. Smells of lemon, dry pilsner malt, some peppery splashes. Tastes dry and citrussy with some mellow lemony notes on the finish.
3.3 Reviewed from notes. Got a sixer of this year’s LongShot. Figure I’d drink one of each and age the other. Pours a slightly hazed golden color with a white head and a decent amount of lacing. Nose brings forward some lemon zest and a fairly hefty dose of black pepper. The taste is also dominated by pepper and a bit of lemon, also adding in a bit of sweetness and bread. Slight spicy taste from something other than the pepper, probably the year. The over-spicing certainly affects the mouthfeel and the drinkability. Hopefully the spicing begins to fade a bit with some age. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 10-16-2010
3.5 Hazy pour topped by a thick white head. The nose is fairly estery. Lots of banana and a bit of clove. Banana and pepper initially with a hint of softer, spiciness on the back. The yeast reminds me of Ommegang, only tilted more towards the estery side of things. There is a bit of light peppery flavour on the finish. A little bit fruity - banana, some peach and a touch of sweetness. Okay - if my the numbers.
3.1 12oz bottle. Golden color with some white head. Citrus aroma - mostly lemon, some spicyness and Belgian yeast flavors. Very interesting and unique. I like how Sam Adams takes chances with the LongShot series.
3.2 Hazy orange colorued body with a nice copper glow and a thin, fast-dying off-white head. Aroma of strong coriander seed, curacao, wheat, yeast and a touch of cloves - I don’t smell any black peppercorn nor any lemons, just curacao. Medium-bodied; Assertive spicey flavour at first with a kick of the cloves and some wheat, yeast and some alcohol. Aftertaste shows a lot of spice as well with some coriander seed, pepper (it finally shows) and more cloves. Overall, a decent beer - definitely showing some creativity much more than Sam Adams, but not as polished as a top craft saison. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from the six pack sampler, purchased at Ye Olde Spirit Shop in Frederick, Maryland on 29-July-2010 sampled at home in Washington on 05-February-2011.
3.1 Bottle courtesy Fratto. Slightly cloudy golden color with a bubbly white head. Aroma is fresh grains, citrus fruit and slightly peppery. Flavor is sweet fruit, Belgian notes with lemon. A little peppery that has a dry finish. Tiny bit of cardboard near the end.
2.9 Bottle from the internet. Slightly hazed yellow pour with a white head. Aroma is lemon, a little spicy, and yeasty. Taste is dry, spiced, and a little citrusy. Nice finish.
3.3 Bottle, from Paskie. Thanks Ryan! Burnt orange with a little skiff of white bubbles. Lemon and fruit leather aroma, background spice on the restrained side. Buttery lemon flavor, some nettle spice. Nice bright carbonation and a nice initial round mouthfeel, though the finish is rather abrupt,
3.1 Golden pour with a fizzy head. Aroma of lemon peel, malt and yeast. Flavor is similar. Not a lot of pepper, just a touch on the finish. Not a big deal.
3.2 Bottle @ Paul’s saison tasting. Golden pour with white head. Lemony citrus, pepper and other spice tones. Body lacking a bit, flavor leaves you wanting something more.
3.2 Long review short, it is a competent summer ale/saison with an interesting spice kick at the end. For some the spice may ruin the usual sunny citrus flavors of a summer ale, but perfect for the people who like new and interesting things.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a bruin body with an off white head and light retention. Aroma of white pepper corns, light grass and citrus hop tones, and a hint of spiciness. A hint of lemon with a biscuit like malt tone. Light sweeter finish. Okay.
3.4 I sort felt like this tasted like the season I’ve used on fish....lemon, pepper with a fizzy carbonation. Actually liked quite a bit.
3.4 12oz bottle...and on tap at GABF where I met the brewer. The beer pours a clear golden color with a large white head and good lacing. Pretty nice aroma of sweet malt, funk, lemon, and pepper. The flavor is a little on the sweeter side, but not too much. Pale malt, funk, lemon, and black pepper. Not bad. Medium-bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Pretty good beer actually, which surprised me.
3.3 I don’t taste lemon pepper. It is a light bodied saison. Quite sweet, with Belgian yeast and light citrus. I would like more flavor and aroma. Light haze in this gold beer.
4.0 THOUGHTS: Very Belgian. Would have liked to see this one bottle conditioned. The pepper was way more noticeable in the flavor than in the aroma. A nice, refreshing beer for summer. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a sparkling, medium golden with a large, white head that mostly diminished and left good to excellent lacing. The aroma was light to moderate light bread; moderate spicy yeast; light pepper, lemon and citrus. The initial flavor was sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet and slightly sour with and average to long duration. There was lemon, malt, pepper, spicy yeast, honey, sugar water and floral hops. The light to medium body was a bit syrupy and then dry with fairly fizzy carbonation and a slightly chalky finish.
3.3 Pours a golden color with a white head. Aroma is sweet of citrus, lemon, yeast, wheat, and a hint of bubblegum. Flavor is citrus, lemon, yeast, and some wheat up front with a finish of bubblegum and just a slight hint of alcohol.
3.6 I went into this one with low expectations and was pleasantly suprised. Aroma off and seemed like a lemon soap. I was very happy with the clean crisp taste. Very easy drinking and this is far from my normally liked styles. Good brew!
3.6 Bottle shared by MrPickles...thanks Andy! - Pours crystal clear yellow with a small foamy white head. Lightly skunky, with some clove, a hint of artificial lemon, apricot, and a hint of plastic. Pretty similar taste--really fruity with a bit of skunk in the background. I’m assuming the light apricot is the Grains of Paradise. Similar to the New Glarus Imperial Saison, but not as syrupy and heavy. Not getting the lemon pepper, but loving how light, fruity, and subtly spicy this is. Light and watery, but it kind of works with the good carbonation. Very solid.
3.1 From a bottle poured a golden color with a fair amount of head. Sweet malty flavor with a quick finish.
3.2 12 ounce bottle poured into a Belgian fishbowl glass. Golden yellow color, just a little hazy, with a creamy white head that looks like a layer of milk. Somewhat lemony citrusy aroma with a hint of butterscotch. Picking up mostly hay and straw flavors, more of an earthy, grassy taste and I only pick up a little of the zesty lemony flavors with a touch of pepper that lingers on in the aftertaste. here is a nice lightly sweet vanilla taste that makes this beer interesting. Lite bodied, smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Easy to drink, light and refreshing. Would pair nicely with a sauteed sole or fish dinner.
3.6 I picked this up at Archer Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on a cold Tuesday night while doing laundry. Aroma mostly of clove, also vanilla, mostly sweet and kinda smells like a Weiss. Appearance is partially cloudy gold with a thin white head. Taste is pretty good, a little bit of pepper for a kick along with clove, lemon, and a bit of banana. Definitely more like a Hefe than a Saison, which is fine by me.
3.6 Black pepper and lemon aroma. There is a whiff of vanilla; lemon merangue. The appearance is golden yellow orange. Head disappears quick. Decent lace, good carbonation. The flavor is earthy malts with a citrusy finish. Some banana creme in the middle. More peppery than most farmhouse ales, which gives a nice little bite. Bubblegum finish. The palate is fizzy and chewy. Bubbly and prickly. This is a sweet hefe with a fizzy lemony base. Really drinkable and pleasant.
2.8 12oz bottle - The idea of a lemon pepper saison really piques my interest, and the execution from Sam Adams was decent. Aroma was lightly citrusy, bubblegum, kinda musty actually with some earthy notes. Flavor had some light grainy sweetness. I was able to pick up some really light lemon pepper-like flavor, but only got this a few times. It was grainy, kinda grassy, musty, light dried fruit but kind of muted. Clean finish, light-medium carbonation. Golden-yellow body, slight haze with a small 1/2" white head. Mouthfeel was on the thin side.
3.2 Struck me as more of a lemony, spicy, pale ale than a saison. A bit of malts, light on the funk, lemon juice, a touch of spice and pepper. Not a bad beer but not what I expect when I have a saison.
3.8 Thanks for sharing, bro! Pours a yellow-copper color with a thin white head which leaves a few streaks of lacing. Aroma is great - lemon rind, Belgian spice, some clove, banana, and vanilla. Taste is much the same, very balanced up front. I don’t care for the finish, it almost seems a little dusty and waxy, a bit abrupt. Other than that, solid!
3.2 Best by September 2010; Sampled August 2010 A vigorous pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a four-finger thick, pale-tan, off-white colored head that leaves a fair amount of lacing on the sides of my glass. The beer is a pale amber / gold color that shows a hazy, light orange / gold hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells quite fruity with citrusy notes of Meyer lemon, and sort of reminds me of sweet Limoncello. Some dusty malt character and a musty earthiness forms a backdrop to citrus character. For being a Saison the nose is pretty plain, though it is nice in its own way. Somewhat dry up front, but it picks up sweetness as it rolls across the tongue, it never gets overly sweet though. The lemon, while noticeable is not as apparent as it was in the aroma. A musty note here seems to remind me of woody pepper, but without any of the associated spiciness. This has a nice tartness from the lemon flavor that almost serves as a sweetness in this beer. A simple, fairly enjoyable beer, I didn’t expect a whole lot from this beer and it ends up being a beer that I could easily drink on a hot day without having to think about; nor is it interesting enough for the beer to ask much of me.
3.4 The aroma of light citrus funk. Clear bright golden in color with a small white head. The flavor is crisp with peppery notes and a bready sweet base.
