Samuel Adams LongShot Magnificent Seven

Samuel Adams LongShot Magnificent Seven

Zack Adams’s Magnificent Seven IPA is described as “a showcase of seven American hop varieties that impart a big piney and lingering resinous flavor. A true Imperial American IPA, this brew pours a rich bronze color. The slightly sweet malt character is pleasantly balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness with grapefruit, pine and earthy notes from the American hops. This medium-bodied IPA also delivers caramel, citrus, lemon and piney aromas.

4.1 a mishmash and perhaps hop nightmare to some but to me it’s nirvana. harsh and wafting grapefruit pith to some pine and nasty near the finish with woody harshness.....i love it. no alcohol and some sweetness full bodied and sudsy. the good stuff!
3.2 Caramel and wood aromas with a slight vegetal note. Clear copper/amber color with a thin but lasting off-white head. Strong, sweet caramel malt flavor with a slight cooked vegetable taste in the back as well as some smoke. There’s earthy bitterness here, but it’s a bit heavy handed and ends up being more of the vegetal flavor that almost gets overpowering. Lays down a dry bitterness on the tongue that’s nice, but the vegetal stays around too. Not bad, but the hops need to be a bit brighter. *** Wow, reading the other ratings makes me think I got a bad bottle. Hopefully I can find another to try! ***
3.4 Bottle. Dark bronze with thick white head. Grapefruit and earthy aroma. Flavour is hop, with caramel. Strong finish, Beer tastes like an Imp IPA, which it is.
3.0 12oz Bottle. Medium head; fine lacing. Surprisingly mild, faintly piney aroma. Color and taste is exactly as described: "This brew pours a rich bronze color. The slightly sweet malt character is pleasantly balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness with grapefruit, pine and earthy notes." A lingering bitterness is the price exacted for the complexity of flavors.
3.2 Pours a dark caramel color, translucent, with a tan head of two fingers. Plenty lacing. Aroma was piny, caramel, toffee, biscuits and some grapefruit. Plenty toffee and caramel, sweet malts, medium bitterness, citrus. Full bodied, creamy, oily, somewhat chewy.
4.3 Pours a beautiful clear chestnut with a rather thick and frothy pale tan head. Aroma is strong and seriously hoppy, with resin and grapefruit underpinnings, promising a first-class IPA. Aroma is - HOLY MOLEY, this one will get your palate’s attention! Hoppy note bold as a pit bull, quite bitter; a dump truck full of grapefruit, and an alcohol bite like a tiger shark add up to HEY BOSTON BREWING HIRE ZACK ADAMS RIGHT AWAY!!! Texture is firm, smooth, and rather fizzy, leaving a woody and fruity finish. Magnificent indeed!
3.5 Bottle. Enjoy before: 09/13. A clear rusty pour with a thick antique white head that leaves rings of lacing behind. The aroma features lots of pine, grapefruits, zesty citrus rinds, caramel, rye, and a little orange/lemon juice. Goes down medium to full-bodied and fairly smooth. The taste starts with quite a bit of toffee, caramel, and a rich freshly-baked bready maltiness. Chewy. A touch of creamy vanilla in the middle. Grapefruits and zesty citrus rinds are present at the end. The finish is very dry and lingers for quite a while. Resiny. A fair amount of warming alcohol is present throughout.
3.7 Bottle from Sprout’s: Poured a medium orangish colored amber hue topped with a growing thick foam head. Aroma is balanced well between a variety of hops and some big caramel like malts but does have somewhat of a pungent whiff. The drink is also balanced in the ingredients as well with a chewy backing of sweet malt and bitter hop pellets that actually remind me of a hopped up barelywine. I can’t remember but this might be the first Imperial IPA I have tasted from Sam Adams. Clearly the winner from this year’s Longshot series
2.2 Pours dark amber. Aroma is metallic and pine. Taste is heavily metallic. All hop character is pine. Nearly undrinkable.
3.5 Ruby-amber in color with a massive, lacy off-white head. Sweet roasty (almost like hot dogs) aroma with floral hop edges. Malt forward, almost chewy with floral hop spikes and some lingering piney-ness in the finish.
2.3 12oz bottle pours a clear amber with some cloudy, beige head. Nose is malty, pine, pithy, spruce. Flavor is sweet, pine, sugary, spruce. Medium bodied.
3.5 12oz. bottle. Aroma of floral, fruity, citric hop and lightly sweet caramel malts, with notes of grapefruit, pine, lemon and some light malt toast in the background. Clear medium copper in color with a lasting, creamy, off-white head and very nice lacing. Flavor profile is full of fresh, fruity, leafy hop flavor throughout, but with a rather malty, sweet, honeyish, toasty caramel backbone, and finishing with a moderate amount of hop bitterness, pine and biscuit undertones. Smooth, low in effervescence and lightly resinous on the palate, body is medium-full. Very easy to drink, sort of a mellow take on the style.
3.6 Pours dark amber with a tall, ivory-tan head. Aroma is baked bread, caramel, pine. Taste is caramel malt, strong resiny hops. Grapefruit peel. Very rich.... Well done.
3.6 12oz bottle poured into my ipa glass. Pours a dark copper color with a medium tan head that leaves great lacing. Smells of pine, grapefruit, lemon, resin, and caramel. Tastes of all the same things in the smell. Mouthfeel is medium and oily with decent carbonation and a dry finish. This is the best from this series of longshot beers. Nice and hoppy for a east coast style ipa. My only complaint is that it not as balanced as it could be and is a little rough on the palate.
3.4 Thanks to arg0. Poured a clear amber color with a nice citrus, earthy hops. Flavor was notes of earthy and citrus hops. Okay flavors, slighty muted floral and citrus hops.
2.7 Bottle shared by argo. Pours clear amber with a small, fizzy white head, short retention with good lacing. Aroma is citrus, floral, and herbal hops. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness with sweet malt and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.6 12 oz. bottle shared by DrSilverworm. Pours a clear honey amber color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma has some toasted caramel malts, and noticeable, but not overpowering spicy, resiny and citrus hops. There was a touch of something I didn’t enjoy, perhaps a hint of cheese. The flavor has some toasted bread and caramel with spicy, resiny and grapefruit citrus hops. Very smooth for an imperial/double ipa, but the flavor is good. Could be a bit more bitter though.
3.0 12oz bottle from Tipple’s. Amber orange pour with a small khaki head. Faint hop aroma, mostly on the sweet malty side, some citrus and dank aspects. Malty, caramel flavor as well, some lingering bitterness and citrus and dank hop character. This was either underwhelming or had a bit of age on it.
2.8 Amber pour with a white head. Sweet, caramel aroma. Some bread, toast, and fruit. Orange peel, grass, and a bit of weed. Some pine and a light lemon note. The flavor is pretty "meh" as well. Sweet bread and caramel malt. Some orange, lemon, and pine. Fairly grassy, lightly bitter, and somewhat astringent on the finish.
2.5 355mL thanks to womencantsail. Pours a clear deep red with thick yellow foam. Spotty lacing. Nose is extremely cheesy, lemon peel, just stale DIPA all around. Taste is dusty, nutty, lemon peel...metallic. Palate is astringent, nutty, harsh. Nothing I hate more than stale DIPA. Ick.
3.6 7/13/2013: Samuel Adams LongShot 2013 Magnificent Seven created by Zack Adams... This is an attractive amber beer with a clean complexion and frothy beige head. The aroma is definitely hoppy, but it unfortunately it requies one to get their nose down into the glass to smell the spicy, herbal, pine and almost cheesy hops. The flavor is fairly aggressive and definitely several steps up from the other beers in the LongShot 6-pack. It starts strong and malty with brown sugar, caramel and bread crust, then shifts into an assault of hoppy flavors including PINE, yellow grapefruit, lemon peel, rsein, and a pinch of spicy herbs. The hops definitely dominate, which is good, but the bitterness level on this beer is fairly constrained. Good hop flavor profile though. Wow, this puppy is strong and the alochol makes no attempt to hide. Despite that, this is a pretty solid beer. I wouldn’t call it "sessionable" by any stretch, but I am enjoying the bottle... SLOWLY! I was really hoping that this beer would deliver the "big grapefruit, pine & resinous notes" that the label promised, and I’m happy to say that it did. Finally, a beer worth buying the 2013 LongShot 6-pack to try! 12 fl. oz. bottle (7.8% ALC./VOL.; Enjoy before SEP 2013) from The Party Source in Bellevue, KY. Rating #120 for this beer.
3.6 Pours amber with an off white head. Aroma is caramel and hops. Flavor is sweet caramel, grapefruit, lemon, turns toward a bitter lingering earthiness.
3.4 Pretty good double, wanted more aroma and body based on the flavor profiles and coloring. But for what it is it exceed expectations!
4.0 Bottle. Pours a mostly clear darker amber color with just a hint of red in there and a moderate cream-colored head on it. Nose hits you with just a hint of sweetness up front, with the citrus and piney hop character coming through afterwards. Taste is somewhat bitter immediately, but tapers off into a well-balanced bit of sweetness. Not a bad beer at all.
3.3 My favorite bottle from this years homebrew six pack. Could use more aromas for me, but great blend of hops in the taste
3.2 From a bottle poured an amber color with a fair amount of head. Hoppy malty flavor with a quick finish.
3.1 12 oz bottle. Pours a copper color with a thin cream colored head. Sticky lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malts, pine, citrus, and earth. Very earthy taste, dirt and leaves. Has a nice sweet caramel malt base balanced with pine and citrus hops. Some definite funk going on. Has some odd flavors. Very dry. Just not digging it.
3.5 12oz bottle. Pours a deep clear copper color with a finger of creamy off white head. Aroma is slightly boozy, with notes of caramel, and sweet citrus. Taste of toasted bread, and caramel malt. Notes of citrus, apricot, and pine. I'm liking the flavor way more then the aroma. Decent DIPA.
3.6 Bottle from bhensonb. Pours reddish copper with a thick beige head and a citrus aroma. There is a sweet slightly smoky malt flavor with some grapefruit and an earthy finish.
3.6 Bottle. The pour is a murky dark orange/brown. The aroma is all hops. The taste is a refreshing hoppy feel. A very good blend of hops. Big hop taste, but very clean and smooth, finishes nice, not too much bitterness.
