Samuel Adams LongShot Weizenbock

Samuel Adams LongShot Weizenbock

Created by Rodney Kibzey, Illinois

Rodney describes his wonderfully complex brew as "deep amber in color with a full creamy body and a dark fruit and clove aroma." This traditional Bavarian style brew took Rodney a few batches to perfect, but the taste is worth all of his hard work.

3.5 Amber pour with a two finger head. Thick and creamy body. Medium body. Aroma is fruit, malts, cloves, and yeast. Flavor is well balanced. Hops and malts. Good stuff.
3.2 12-oz. Thanks, Headbanger! Pours murky dark brown with a big, thick, creamy tan head and decent rings of lace. Big bubblegummy nose. Not really much else happening there. Creamy medium body. Brown bread, bubble gum, and a bit of watermelon on the mid-palate. Not far off Silver City’s weizenbock, but pretty far off the pleasures weizenbocks have to offer. This is kind of a doughy belgian ale, at best. That said, it has no flaws. It’s just that the recipe is kind of lost.
2.8 Dark copper. Fair head. Banana and dusty chocolate smell. Sweet banana up front and baking soda in the back. Thin body. Chocolate, chalk and dust. No joy.
3.9 12 oz. bottle to a large snifter. Poured a hazy, brown/amber color, with a foamy, off white/light tan tone that diminished slowly, leaving some nice, clinging lace. The aroma was a little bready, with notes of sweet, dark fruits, some spice as clove, and a touch of ripe banana. The flavor was a continuation of the aroma notes along with some tartness. Nice alcohol presense commingled well with the various flavor notes. The mouthfeel was creamy, with some light bitterness in the finish. A savory representative of the style.
3.3 Cloudy brown pour with a half-inch white head. Bready, grainy malt aroma with a touch of clove.Sharp, tangy, earthy wheat flavor and a nice full body. Nice.
3.6 Got this as West Lakeview chicago. the guy was there who made the beer. it was good. pours dark brown color. small white head. nice dark fruit flavors.
4.1 Bottle. Enjoy goofy hand-drawn cover art. Even more pleased with the beer itself. Malt aroma, cloves. Mahogany brown, quarter inch head. Thick palate, undertones of fruit. Strong brew, scored with my boyfriend after sharing this beer. Recommended, top notch for a macrobrewery.
3.8 12oz bottle. Surprisingly righteous brew from some random guy in Illinois. Not bad, Rodney. Dark brown with a thin white head and medium-high carbonation. Aroma is phenolic with banana and some yeast. Tastes a little like a Belgian ale with dark fruit flavors, but also the banana/clove taste you expect from a weizenbock. Not too unlike Schneider Aventinus. Complex yet refreshing. Very drinkable. Can floor you before you know it.
4.0 330ml bottle - ticks all the style guidelines boxes. Wonderful spicy rich vanilla aroma, light phenols. Murky brown to look at but wonderful mouthfeel. Sweet rich dark fruits, more vanilla and a touch milk chocolate. Lingers and warms with an almost sherry like finish. Superb.
4.2 "I just love smelling it. I could smell it all day," my friend just remarked. And, for good reason. The beer has a delicious sweet bread aroma. And, then the beer backs up the aroma with an amazing smooth, but full body. Not much german yeast ester like banana. A little clove... maybe? Overall, a great easy drinking, full beer. Great for the cold days.
3.7 cloudt dark garnet bodywith a skin of grey for a head.dusty clove aroma with a ripe banana scent.apricot bubblegum flavor. nice banana yeasty goodness in the finish. a nice caramel toffee sweetness throughout this one that i like. 4 6 7 4 16
3.6 12oz Bottle: Dark brown with a creamy khaki head. Aroma is of sweet malts and candied sugar with a hint of clove. Full bodied with bold spicy, yeasty flavors mixed with some banana, clove and roasted malts. Slightly grainly as well. Has a slight burn going down and a sweet finish. Honestly, I wasnt expecting it to be this good. Pleasant surprise for sure.
3.6 355ml bottle from a trade with a non RBer. Very deep russet with thin beige head. Quite a sweet nicely bocky weizen. Does everything you would expect but more with an American character than German. Nice sweetish darkish malts. Quite pleasant. Drank on Xmas Eve in the kitchen chatting. Took about an hour to finish it.
3.1 Crushed with Jakebra. Very creamy. Cloves and such on the nose. Alcohol warms the tummy. Gets a little sour in the finish.
3.7 Pours a murky looking brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma of clove, banana, some fruit. Nice flavor, sweet with a bit of an alcohol bite at the end.
3.4 Very tasty and creamy. Part of the Sam Longshot sampler. Interesting blend of flavors but overall very good.
3.6 translucent hazy dark brown appearance, nice white head. Estery nose, flavor of dark crystal and wheat with the yeast being the predominate flavor. A very solid beer especiallhy for a macro, but the yeast doesn’t quite have the depth to make it a top of the line example
3.4 (bottle - 12 oz) Murky brown pour with not much of a head. Aroma is kind of light with some chocolate, banana, clove, and yeast. Flavor is spicy and yeasty at the beginning with a middle of some roasted malts, bananas, and a bit of chocolate near the end. Sweet and smooth when you drink it.
3.5 Bottle given to me by MaxxDaddy. Thank you sir. Beautiful pour, awesome head, with a muddy copper brown body that is completely unfiltered. Aroma is lightly metallic, wheaty (almost smells like its just begun germinating) with a touch of tomato and pure dark chocolate. The body is thick and perfect, though the beer is very slightly chalky. The flavor is slightly sweet and very grainy, and there a mild ethanol burn far into the finish.
3.6 This is so great to try, I dont get to see many of this style being sold and to have a major company like sam put it out is great even if it is a rare release. appearance was amazing with murky brown that darkened the higher it sat int he glass. smelled of clove or maybe nutmeg with a crisp sugar banana in the back. the taste was a musky roasty taste with a full mouth feeling that ended just short of being heavy.
4.2 Surprisingly delicious... wasn’t expecting much from the longshot series after trying the grape pale ale, but i def enjoyed this bock... hint ofclove, banana, maybe peach... i wish i could get a case of just this and not the other longshots...
3.0 12 oz bottle in LongShot mixpack. Pours a hazy red-orange brown with ample off-white crown that has moderate retention and somewhat fingery lacing. Aroma is full of spices, cloves and cinnamon, with heavy malt character and caramel and toffee sweetness. There is also a good bit of biscuit with some kind of phenol in the nose. Unusual to say the least. Flavour is intensely malty from the beginning with almost no hop bitterness throughout. There is also some kind of phenol and ester that lingers on the palate after the taste that makes this a bit unusual with the wheat malt aftertaste. Mediium-bodied, this beer finishes a bit cleanly with some discernible EtOH burn as the beer warms. Great beer if you like this style, but not my cup of tea.
4.4 Bottle. Sweet peach/banana, clove and wheat malt with just a hint of alcohol. Cloudy orange-brown color with small head. Sweet ripe banana/peach, clove, and wheat malt flavor. Light alcohol aftertaste. A spectacular beer - they really need to make this a regular beer. I just automatically expect that US Weizens won’t match German ones but this is one that not only stands up to the style but exceeds my expectations. Thank God I found this beer.
4.3 This beer pours anice dark brown with a good tan head, I really like the way the yeast provides the appropriate clove flavor that is definitive of the style. Good Malt bill nice hopping Excellent beer for autumn and the Hollidays.
3.9 Poured a cloudy brown. Definitely smell of clove. Was pretty good, until a fly landed in it. Thankfully was almost done so he didn’t get much of it.
3.7 12oz bottle. Pours sludgy brown with a creamy offwhite head, good lace. Smells of bready malt, clove and sweet spices. Tastes bready malty and spicy sweet, fruity with a bit of pepper. Medium body, good carbonation.
4.1 12oz bottle. Wow, this smells pretty good! Rich and spicy with cloves, dark fruit and banana. There is a floral aspect as well. Dark copper color with a one fingered, off-white head, gentle carbonation, and lots of clinging foam. Sediment is visible in the bottle. The taste is dark fruits, spice, cocoa, appropriate alcohol, and some banana bread at the finish. The finish is flavorful, but well balanced and very drinkable. Rich, full mouthfeel. What a wonderful beer, Rodney was very much deserving of this award. It strikes a balance in all aspects, the clove and fruitiness from the yeast is present but not overpowering, the same can be said for the malt character and really every other part of the beer.
3.7 I picked up a bottle this weekend at 99 Bottles on Auburn, WA. It poured kind of a merky muddy brown with for me No Head. though once swirled in the glass built a nice tan head. It feels very smooth creamy which was quite pleasent. This is my first Weizen Bock and i enjoyed it emensely.
3.2 Pours a cloudy caramel colour with a large tan head. Aroma is somewhat sweet, caramel, and nutty. Flavor is heavier, with an evident creamy wheat like mouthfeel. it was a decent beer, but i expected way more.
3.1 Good but not as good as i expected, with the percentile, murky brown color, decnt off white head, nose is clove, banana. flavor is sweet, some alcohol bite, clove flavor. decent finish but still kinda a let down
