Samuel Adams Third Voyage Double IPA

Samuel Adams Third Voyage Double IPA

This unique double IPA takes the style’s origins a step further. IPAs were born out of making an ale that could sustain a long voyage. For our take, we were inspired by the indomitable Capt. James Cook whose 3rd voyage made him the first to navigate a treacherous route from England to New Zealand to the Pacific Northwest. Using Cascade hops from each of these regions we created a brew that’s citrusy, earthy and full of bold character.

3.1 Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Enjoy by July 2014 on the box so this is a bit passed its peak. Aroma is moderately hippy with quite a bit of grapefruit but a stronger dank, pine resin character with a lot of forest floor notes. Medium light toasted bread and light caramel character with some biscuit notes. Light alcohol spice. Pours a fairly clear, chipper amber color with a big, thick, tan head. Not exactly the color I would expect from a DIPA. Moderate lacing with small legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with some lightly toasted bread and light caramel notes. Moderate biscuit and toasted crackers. Medium strong and slightly harsh bitterness with medium light grapefruit pith notes. Moderately strong point resin and dank, earthy hop notes. Light alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation; carbonation had a soft, creamy feel to it. Low, but present hop astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but the hop character isn’t all that great and the malt character is too dark and strong. I think the malt and the hops clash a bit too. Very much an East Coast IPA.
3.0 tasting-average beer, nothing special, hoppy, mild grapefriut, medium to long hoppy finish,
2.7 Malty taste with a smooth finish. Darker color but not as cloudy. Very nice beer overall
3.8 Transfer from BA review on 6-15-12- Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance – Poured a beautiful amber color with a thick off-white yellow tinted head. The head had wonderful retention but eventually faded to give a great deal of lacing. Smell – A nice sweet caramel and biscuit aroma are mixed with a stronger pine smell. A grapefruit and lemongrass aroma are also present mixing with the others nicely. Taste – The taste starts out biscuit and bready, with a lighter caramel flavor. These are mixed with a pine and citrus flavor. The pine grows stronger toward the middle of the taste where a lighter alcohol flavor comes onto the scene. Given more time the alcohol flavor gets stronger and when it mixes with more bitter citrus and some earthy hop flavors a bitter and boozy flavor is left on the tongue taking away from the overall taste. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is nice and creamy with a carbonation level that is medium. Both are wonderful for an Imperial IPA and really allow one to experience both the malt as well as the hop. Overall – This would have been a wonderful brew as it had a fantastic look, smell, and mouthfeel, unfortunately its taste was quite off; There was far too much booziness and it was a bit on the bitter side.
1.6 Another nifty bottle of beer from nike. Big dull hop aroma. Large thick rocky head on an orangish colored clear beer. Thick resinous palate. Taste, if you call it that, is nothing but crazy up front pine tar mixed with hand soap mixed with chewing on unripe green grapefruit rinds, and I don’t mean sour, I mean bitter, yeah wewy bitter, for the rest of the day ruined taste buds forget about eating dinner anytime soon. The epitome of highly hopped flavored beer. If I was looking for a kick in the jaw, and some of you are, this would be great. But I’m not impressed.
3.6 Bottle courtesy pikapp327. Pours a clear amber red color with a foamy white head. Aroma is fairly hoppy. Drippy hops, sweet and resiny. Flavor is dry, hoppy, sappy resin and more hops.
4.3 Flaska på Broadway. Vacker vitt skum. Sköna toner av knäck och apelsinmarmelad som återfinns i näsan och smaken. Bra balans och mycket trevlig humlebeska!
3.4 Bottle from QClub at home. Deep copper pour with thin foamy head. Slightly musty piney hoppy aroma with lots of candy sweetness. Taste is similarly piney hops with an unexpectedly thick/slick palate for a DIPA. Very bitter finish. Not bad - especially for the price.
2.2 Love IPA’s, but this one did not appeal to me. Too sweet, the malt gets lost, and there is some sort of spice overshadowing everything else. Too complicated, too much alcohol, just not a good taste.
3.0 Bottle at Bishop’s Arms, Malmö, Gustav Adolf Torg Bright amber color, hazy, with generous compact head. The aroma is strong and nice, a bit fruity and sweaty, lightly herbal (thyme and heather). Syrupy and oily mouthfeel; moderately sweet, with caramel and crystal malt flavor, hint of nuts and vegetables, strong bitterness. Elements are it cohesive, the result is not fully pleasant.
3.8 Pours a darker amber color with slightly off white head. Lots of flowery notes, grapefruit, and just a hint of pine; all follow onto the palate. Finishes very earthy, with almost a peat like aftertaste, interesting.
3.0 The aroma from this brew is floral hops and maltieness with a red amber color amd a small white head. The taste is malty sweet lotsa hop flavor and a good touch of bitterness. Its a well balanced trio. The bitterness comes in the aftertaste. Its a medium/heavy bodied beer with decent carb. For a dipa not too bad. I would think there would be a bit more of a sweetness and a full body but worth a try.
3.2 Out of a bottle. Strong bitter hops. Some burnt/malt flavors and hints of lemon. A good level of carbonation. Smooth and easy to drink.
3.5 Very nice ipa here. Love the copper color and smooth hops finish. Would drink all day of not so high abv
3.8 Overall a good DIPA, my only gripe is that it starts to taste syrupy as it warms. Kind of a cloying Christmas lollipop sweetness.
3.5 Poured from a bottle. Clear fizzy yellow color, small white head. Citrus and floral hops aroma. Slightly oily hops flavor with a medium bitter finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
3.1 Aroma of malt and hops. Clear amber colour, with a nice well laced transient head. Fruity, bitter taste, with a bitter hoppy palate.
3.7 Reviewed from notes. The appearance had a brown/red body leaves a concave white half finger head that slowly dies into the body. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen. Some spotty spiderweb lacing appears and slides gently down the sides of my chalice. The smell had the hops up front with a bit of light malts here and there. The taste was more maltier and the hops are really more subdued. It leaves a malty aftertaste and finish. The palate was about a medium, slightly creamy, sessionable. Overall, this is a good beer and I would have it again.
3.9 Good stuff. Nice hoppy aroma that was strong and subtle. Amber-orange color with a decent fizzy white head. Average weight palate with good carbonation. Crisp and full. Very well blended with citrus, pine and floral bitterness. Malt background offered some sweetness with caramel and a little spice. Impressed.
3.9 Delicious offering, Sam! A+ appearance, burnt orange color, beat head on any Sam Adams I’ve tried (2 fingers, creamy/frothy, long-lasting). Great lacing. Rich full flavor, citrus and malts, really explodes.
3.7 12oz bottle shared. Pours golden orange with white head. The aroma is malt forward, followed by the hops. The flavor is more complex than what you would think. Plenty of hops and malts. Very earthy in the flavor as well. Overall a solid beer from Sam Adams.
3.7 Pours deep amber, 2 finger head with very nice lacing. Grapefruit, mango, spice nose. Tastes citrusy, hints of toffee, alcohol is apparent. Full bodied. Finishes somewhat earthy, herbal, more alcohol. On the fence with this one.
3.2 Resiny pine candy. Pours cloudy honey amber with a very thick foamy off white head that coats the glass as it very slowly (glacially) fades. Pine and grapefruit with a hard candy sweetness. Clean bitter on the finish. The hops/malt balance on this is really well done. Hops are very noticeable but not overwhelming as they are tempered by a thick mouthfeel and a mild sweetness.
4.5 This is batch 1. I’m awed. A perfectly balanced DIPA. Lovely hop aroma of grapefruit and spice. Lovely malt backbone with a perfect bitterness.
4.1 Att en jätte som Samuel Adams kan lyckas med något som en dubbelipa är stort. Fin arom med mycket bra smaker. Här finns de rätta smakerna o hade beskan rullat något mjukare över tungan så hade det blivit toppbetyg.
3.5 Pours copper with a good sized beige head. Nose off pine and floral hops. Medium plus body. Resin mouthfeel. Flavor is caramel malts, lots of hop;s. 5 finger foamy beige head. Lots of pine with a good dose of floral for aroma. Med body. Flavor is resin, mild roast caramel, and a lot of floral. It burns just a bit on the tongue’s edges. Finishes quite hoppy. Good drink.
3.4 75 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden orange with a huge white head. Aroma is pine and dry hoppy. Bitter and slight spiced. Bitter and dry hoppy finish. Crisp and bitter dry finish. Grapefruity and pine hoppy finish.
3.0 From bottle. Pours a sort of burnt orange with a bit of off-white, mostly dissipating head. Decent lacing. Not much hop presence in the nose, mostly malt. Not much hop presence in the taste, mostly malt. Aftertaste is clean. Not bad, but would have preferred more Cascade and less malt in the mix.
3.4 Pour from a 22oz bomber. Darker amber brew with two fingers of off white head. Aroma of earth, resin, pine, brown sugar. Taste is sweet caramel and brown sugar at the very start, heavy sweet malty with deep resin in bitter in the finish and ends with a moderately bitter hops flourish. Lingering sweet and sticky. A heavy IPA, a ponderous IPA...
3.5 Bomber. Nose is heavy citrus with a hint of pine and toffee. Clear dark rusty orange with a big heavy lacing beige head. Flavor is bitter with some light sweetness and a caramel backdrop.
