Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout

Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout

Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980.

Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish.

3.5 500ml bottle, pours a near black with a beige head. Aromas & tastes of dark fruits, coffee, chocolate, liquorice, caramel, oats, hints of ash, & light roasted malt. Moderate to medium body. Soft light bitter finish. A well balanced oatmeal stout slightly on the thin side, very enjoyable

4.0 Good looking in the glass with a thick, lingering beige head. Creamy mouthfeel. Medium body. Maybe slightly thin for an oatmeal stout but this doesn’t detract. Complex taste with cocoa, licorice and berries. So smooth, clean and easy to drink. A great, classic stout. Real quality for a reasonable price too.
4.3 Bottle from House of Trembling Madness, online. Pours a very dark brown, with small beige head Aroma is sweet, roasty, chocolate, light fruity berry note, some ash. There is a luscious creamy mouthfeel to this stout despite being light to medium in body and a fine carbonation which is superb. Taste wise its semi-sweet, roast, chocolate, liquorice, light fruitiness. Excellent.
3.9 How: bottle. Fridge cold. BB: Head: two fingers, tan. Dense. Colour: almost black. Aroma: dark fruits, oats, smooth coffee& chocolate, light roasty notes. Taste: medium body, soft carbonation, oats, chocolate, light roasty notes. Balancing, soft bitterness. Chocolate& soft coffee notes in medium to long aftertaste. Really smooth.
5.0 An excellent, well balanced smooth stout.
3.6 Pours black with creamy light brown top, medium body Nose is mild wood and tar Taste is cafe latte, oats, sirup and a hint of wood
3.6 355 mL bottle. Black with a little transparency. Smells of roasted malt with a light creamy aroma. A touch metallic. Tastes of roasted malt with accompanying bitterness. Cut by a creamy, bright flavor in the back end. Medium body, if that. Very easy to drink. Simple and tasty, but doesn't knock my socks off.
3.4 500ml bottle delivered from Blue Boar and drunk at home. Very dark brown, opaque with a ring of tan/khaki head. Some chocolate in the aroma, some coffee, some ash. Sweet taste with a light grape tartness, a touch of black pepper. Slightly watery body buoyed up by fairly heavy carbonation. It is a decwnt beer by any standard but I'm surprised by the mega-high rates.
3.3 Klarowny, ciemny rubin. Spora piana o barwie kawy z mlekiem. Drobne oczka. Aromat czekoladowo kawowy z lekkim kwaskiem. Kremowe, kwaskowe, dobrze wysycone. Sporo kawy, nutka czekolady. Może trochę za słodkie. Solidny stout.
3.8 Bottle from LCBO. Pours black with tons of frothy head and lacing. Notes are nutty, fruity, coffee, roasted grain. Taste medium/light sweet light bitter. Medium silly body medium carbonation.
4.1 Deep and dark body, revealed to be a clear brown with a back-light, below a tall tan head, thick and creamy, from a vigorous pour into an Imperial tulip pint glass. The head develops a pitted and rocky surface as it recedes, leaving some strings of lacing behind. As the beer is consumed, the glass has sheets and strings of tan lacing from the top to the surface of the beer. Aroma is roasted chocolate and figs. Some hints of coffee, but that is just the familiarity of the roasted smells. The taste starts with the welcome flavors of English brewing, the minerals from the water and the flavor of the English hops and roasted malts, giving flavors of chocolate and dark fruits (figs and raisins). Smooth flavor and smooth body, with just a bit of bitterness, as from roasted coffee. The finish is sweetish, and yet dry. The body is moderate to thin, as befits the English stout tradition. Overall, excellent to sip by the fire on a near-winter evening here in the upper Midwest. I'm almost sitting in an English pub in my mind.
2.2 Ok, not great
4.0 Aromat malo intensywny: nuty palone, kawowe i sporo akcentów ciemnych owocow. W smaku rowniez lekkie, nisko nasycone z wyczusalnymi ciemnymi i suszonymi owocami podbitymi nutkami czekalodowo-kawowymi i cos ala coca-cola. Goryczka niska do sredniej - kawowa. Posmak nieco kwasnawy od palonych slodow. Lekki outmeal stout - klasyka gatunku.
3.9 5% Deep and dark oatmeal stout. Smooth creamy flavor. Not bitter. Strong pat taste.
4.5 Dark brown to black on the pour, bright and translucent, with lively carbonation and a thick, mousse-like tan head, with excellent retention and beautiful lacing. Aroma of roasted grains, with some coffe-like note. Medium-low hoppy aroma, floral. Tastes bitter, with a lot of roasted grains and coffe, Maillard flavours, with a lingering burnt-like bitterness. Low hop bitterness but the balance is obviously all on the malts. Full mouthfeel, very smooth and silky, medium carbonation. A perfect and classic example of Oatmeal Stout.
4.3 W aromacie i smaku czekolada, kakao, paloność. W smaku gładkie, pełne, lekko palone, mocno czekoladowo-kakaowe, bardzo pijalne, lekka ziemisto-ziołowa goryczka na finiszu. Super oatmeal stout.
3.1 very dark brown with beige head. metallic aroma, weird as the tawny porter from the same pack wasnt at all, bready. smooth, easy medium roast, oats noticeable but not overwhelming. oat malt. mild feeling, light sweetness, medium bitterness. thinnish body yet oily. would buy again, but not standout.
4.2 355 ml bottle. Murky dark brown, beige colored fluffy head. Liquorice, dark chocolate, caramel and toffee, roasted almost burnt malt, citrus notes, marzipan, roasted pistachios, lactose. Mild roasty bitterness, malty sweetness. Medium bodied, oily texture, soft carbonated, dry malty finish. Outstanding.
4.0 Rocky light brown head stayed on a mahogany coloured still body. Malt, liquorice & cereal aroma. Medium to full bodied, soft, smooth & airy with clean back. Malt, demerara, liquorice, jam & cereal tastes with a light smoky finish. Excellent.
4.3 550ml bottle brewed in England at 5%. Ultra-rich dark brown, faint ruddiness, could pass for black in dim lighting. Large but not unmanageable 'feathered' stout head, sandy in colour and lasting decently. Sweet roasted malt aroma prominent, with a little oat character, some slight blackcurrant and cocoa underneath. Moderate-lowish carbonation, silky but not thin or weedy texture, developing cocoa (and blackcurrant!) notes with slight but distinct roastiness in the aftertaste. A little oatiness but everything is kept free-flowing, refreshing yet roasty, but without any acridity, sweetness similarly being moderate. Simple (although certainly not one-dimensional) but really luxurious and balanced thereby. Textbook oatmeal stout, as you might expect, making for great drinking as well as sampling. A must-try if you're even a little curious. Frankly, oatmeal or no oatmeal, it's an absolutely rock-solid stout. No gimmicks here.
4.3 550ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Dated as best before May 2021. Served at cool room temperature (about 14 Celsius) into a pint glass. The beer pours black, no light seeping through. A two finger creamy thick head, tan colour. The beer sounds as you would expect a stout to on pour, if you drink this style often I’m sure you know what I mean. The aroma, like the taste, is fairly simple. Dark roasted malts, porridge oats. The lightest touch of liquorice. Sweet and reassuring. The liquorice notes don’t transition into the taste at all. But there is a lot of dark fruit. Think plum or raisin. Again heavily roasted malt, roasted barley, porridge oats are dominant but not heavy handed. The mouthfeel is on the fuller side of medium. Very smooth and drinkable. A simple effective beer. Traditional in a good way. If test cricket was a beer it would be this one.
4.1 Early rating from Beer Buddy app
3.5 Aroma : Roasty chocolate & caramel malts and roasted oats, with merest hints of coffee and dark fruits & a light earthy note. Taste : As aroma. Full bodied & smooth. Medium roasty bitter with a light sweet edge all the way through. Straightforward & decent
4.1 Classic
Super!
4.0 550ml bottle from deli in Northallerton. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel, prunes, figs, coffee and chocolate. Lovely smooth, creamy mouthfeel with a decent body for the abv. Taste is caramel, dark fruits, coffee and milk chocolate. This is an incredibly well made stout. Of course it’s very traditional in the style and fairly subtle compared with craft stouts, but that’s not a bad thing. Gorgeous!
3.6 550ml (5%) at home on 15 Jul 2020, purchased on 16 Jun 2020 (bbe Mar 2021): roast malt aroma, very dark brown, lively bubbly beige head, no lacing, toffee, liquorice, oatmeal flavour, creamy, smooth, prolonged malty aftertaste.
