Samuel Smiths Organic / Old Brewery Pale Ale

Samuel Smiths Organic / Old Brewery Pale Ale

Bottle: Filtered

Name changed from Old Brewery Pale Ale to Organic Pale Ale in 2011.

Ingredients: Water, malted barley, yeast, hops.

Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); best barley malt, yeast and aromatic hops; fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create a full, rounded flavour and after-taste.

Best served at about 51°F (11°C).

4.0 Really good. Malty, sweet, a bit of spice, a little fruity and just the right amount of bitter. I usually don't think the carbonation/texture of a beer is very important, but the level of carbonation on this beer actually complements the flavor very well.
3.8 Pours a nut brown colour. Taste is very malty, briwn sugar, yeast and winter spice. I'm very impressed will seek out again.
3.6 the aroma: fruity, herbal, hints of bitter citrus, caramel, flowers, grasses... the taste: fruity, floral, notes of citrus, caramel, flowers, straw, herbs... the aftertaste: sweet, bitter, dry...

0.0 Meaty red ale type beer. Copper colour with malty aroma and taste of malt, mild hops and brown sugar. Very meaty ale.
3.9 Pours a deep dark orange, with a quite big and dense white head. Excellent retention and very nice lacing. Aroma has a delicate malty base of caramel, with lighter biscuity and grainy hints. The malty base gives way to red fruity notes (kinda fruit cake like) and lighter citric hints. A grassy background feel gives a bit of freshness. Not super intense, but very nice and well defined. Taste notes follow the aroma, plus maybe a slight mineral hint. Medium to high sweetness, not much bitterness. A slight sweet edge in the mouth and a semi-sweet finish. The overall balance is certainly on the sweet side for the style and perhaps a tad too sweet for my ideal taste, but the beer is undeniably pleasant and well defined. Light to medium body with about average carbonation. A nice half-smooth, half-soft mouthfeel. Excellent drinkability. Very pleasant beer.
3.9 Nice / solid ESB - as always a higher quality product from tadcaster. Good ale beginning to the finish.
3.8 550ml bottle from Beers of Europe, online. Pours a clear amber with small off-white head, nice retention. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, pear and toffee. Taste starts malty with caramel and toffee notes but then there is a nice fruity tang with a zesty bitter bite in the finish. Beginning, middle and end of this beer from a flavour perspective is well crafted Medium bodied, fairly smooth. Very good bitter.
4.5 De Labirratorium. En copa Teku. Programando Gestorred.
3.5 Foamy off white head stayed on a caramel coloured, slowly carbonating body. Malt, yeast & bready aroma. Medium bodied, smooth with a sharp dry clean back. Caramel, yeast & toffee tastes with a tangy hoppy finish. Nice

3.0 Docela klasický anglický bitter starého stylu zakoupený ve vratimovském hypermarketu JIP.
3.0 Aroma: Malty sweet with caramel notes Flavour: Sweet malt with caramel and fruity bitterness. Aftertaste is malty sweet and lightly bitter. Colour: Amber with an offwhite head. 5/2-2019
3.4 Flasa z kubbo select. Vona pomerne silna karamelova muerne horka. Medova cira farba. Chut karamelova chmelova intenzivna.
3.0 Persistent medium foam and a pleasant aroma of caramel. It tastes of a little lightly roasted malt, a little hazelnut, a little bit of citrus and ripe berries which I can not quite define further. Furthermore, it has a slight taste of light bread and a slightly fermented taste towards the end. The hop bitterness is suitable for the type of beer and its bitterness contrasts nicely with the malt sweetness. It has a dry aftertaste and very low carbonation, which contributes to a medium aftertaste. I seem to remember Samuel Smith for a much higher standard in their range, and in that light, this Pale Ale might disappoint a little. But if you taste this beer really careful, it is actually a very typical Pale Ale where there is neither anything missing nor too much of anything. I can highly recommend it.
4.3 550ml bottle brewed in England at 5%. Clear toffee with a nice-sized fairly short-duration head. Faintly nutty light toffee aroma with some fruity tones, faint pear, and perhaps tangerine without any sharpness. Moderate- carbonation. Hints of strawberry and pear, with a nutty caramel malt coming into its own in the aftertaste, counterbalancing a lightly drying herbaceous bitter finish. Good robust yet refreshing texture. Very very solid brew from Samuel Smith's, with their classic rustic finishing touch and water character, although to be sure it's not a modern Pale Ale in style at all - there's a reason it's put with the Best Bitters (and ESBs!) on this site. The whole 'organic' thing is decried as a gimmick by some, but there's no doubt this beer has a lovely transparency to the flavours on the palate, actually gives off the impression it was made from plants, and feels just right for a relaxing picnic among some greenery, in a way macro brews or fancy-pants craft stuff just wouldn't, so three cheers for that!
3.9 Finding more beers I missed prior to the "retirement." English pale ale has great aroma of red fruit and bread. Classic English ESB flavor of red fruit with mild bitterness in finish. Classic, clean, flavorful, balanced ESB.
3.3 Historical tick which I am adding as a rate so that I can see the impact it has on my stats. 500 Beers To Try Before You Die. Remeber the shock at the price as the first bottle I'd bought at a Sam Smith's pub (Princess Louise to be exact).
3.4 500ml bottle from deli in Northallerton. Pours chestnut/ amber off white head. Aroma is toffee, malty cereal, floral, touch of citrus and nutty. Taste is similar. Malty and nicely bitter. Decent classic British bitter.
3.3 Toffee apple and malt. Some ripe berries and toast in there too. Decent pale.
3.5 Okay but nothing special. Not very strong taste
3.4 550ml bottle from Cannon Hall Farm Shop, Barnsley. Body slightly hazy copper-amber with a small, short lived, off-white head. Nose is sweet bready malt, caramel and butter. Sweet flavour of bready malt, caramel, toffee, light citrus and a hint of spice with a dry, mildly bitter finish. Well balanced and easy to drink.
3.2 Amber color, foam quickly leaves. Nose. Malt, slightly grassy, caramel. warming up, cherry notes appear. Taste. Malt, dry, caramel, berry acidity (cherry?) In the aftertaste is sweet-bitterness and a little caramel - bread shades ..
3.7 Amber and clear with a frothy head. Smell of roasted malts with a molasses note. Very malty taste for a pale ale. Foamy carbonation. Bitter ending.
