Santa Fe Imperial Java Stout

Santa Fe Imperial Java Stout

This is the kind of beer that gives the word "stout" a reputation. Extra generous quantities of barley malt, followed by vigorous fermentation leaves this "imperial" heavy weight with 8% alcohol A.B.V. and a body as full as chocolate bread pudding. A complimentary and complex array of bitter notes comes form potent American hops, earthy British hops, black-roasted malts and, of course, coffee. Santa Fe Brewing Company uses only top-quality ingredients like organically grown East Timor coffee beans blended with New Guinea coffee beans, locally roasted by O’hori’s Coffee House. Its heavenly flavor and aroma can’t be beat or imitated.

4.1 12 oz. can pours an opaque black with decent beige head that persists and leaves good lacing. Aroma has coffee, roasted malts, molasses, licorice, and cocoa. Taste is bitter with a long finish. Body is full with just enough carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. This is a substantial stout that I’d love to find again.
4.0 Can. Huge off white ever lasting head. Pitch black color. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, grain, pine, grape. Full body with a thick texture. Moderated sweet with good counter bitterness. Lingering roasted bitter malt finish.
4.4 A secret winner. Very well priced, an extremely good stout in the 8% range. It never lets down.
3.7 12floz can, no freshness date present, paid about $1.50, and poured into a pint glass. Deep, dark brown in color with a retentive light brown head. Decent roasted malt aroma, which carries over to full-bodied palate of semi-sweet chocolate and coffee flavors. Good stout.
4.0 One of the best smelling beers I've ever laid my nostrils to. Not a fan of coffee, definitely taste the java, yet still amazing.
3.6 A deep dark imperial stout with a thick frothy lacing mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with light pepper notes, light coffee grind, musty character, nice and smooth. In mouth, a sweet mocha chocolate malt with light vanilla, light powdery character, silky mouth feel, light milk character, coffee grind, alcohol warmth, very nice. Can, about 3 years old.
3.3 On tap at Tap & Bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out subdued coffee and medium roasted malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with subdued coffee and medium roasted malt. Surprisingly restrained for an impie. Pleasant but lacking oomph.
3.8 Can. Dark brown pour, with a shortly lived tan head. Lots of coffee, espresso, chocolate, and caramel. Nice, tasty coffee beer, but not too complex.
3.9 Can. Black with an average tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and dark roasted malts. Taste is loaded with coffee. Cocoa, vanilla, lactose, and dark roasted malts. Average thickness and lingering coffee flavor.
3.6 The coffee in this beer is very pronounced. The roast is too strong for me. Appropriate thickness just too much coffee for my taste.
3.4 Shared 12 oz. can. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Taste follows nose with a dash of lactose. OK.
4.1 Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours from the12 oz can dark brown with a tan head and gorgeous lacing. Nose of coffee and lactose. Full body. Flavor shows some burnt chocolate malt with lactose, but coffee still dominates. Finishes with a lot of the coffee and chocolate and just a hint of bitterness. This is a nice drinking beer.
3.3 Aroma: lots of dry classic stout notes; not much coffee but a little rubbery; Appearance: pitch black with fluffy tan head; some lacing; Taste: follows nose; still not much coffee; slightly watery; Palate: heavy body with long, sweet/dry finish; Overall: okay but nothing special.
4.2 Can - Pours black w/creamy tan head. Distinct coffee aroma with notes of chocolate, dark bread. Strong flavor of dark roasted grains, COFFEE, bakers chocolate, chocolate muffin, creamy mouth-feel, bitter hops middle, earthy, coffee/bakers chocolate aftertaste. So good!
3.9 September 2016 - Can share at Leighton’s, with many thanks to our host! As ’Santa Fe Imperial Java Stout’, "not for use with donuts", no ABV or date details. Very dark brown, foamy tan head, dotted lacing. Aroma is coffee, earthy, red pepper. Body is smooth with tingly carbonation. Taste is coffee, toasted bread, toffee, earthy finish. Flavourful with a nice balance. Pretty good. (3.9)
3.4 19th September 2016 Leighton’s flat clearance. Thanks to Mr Smith. Can. Clear amber brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and soft and has modest fine carbonation. Soft dark malts, a little dark chocolate. Modest coffee. Light creamy malt sweetness underneath. Smooth semi dry finish. Decent.
3.3 Can to glass - beautiful, black with a strong, well laced, light beige head. Something is off in the aroma for me... Some mocha, but a strange chemical mintiness. The minty aroma yields to a well rounded chocolate mint on the tongue. More of a dessert stout. Nice lingering, fresh lactic coffee finish. Great after the nose.
3.9 Draught at the Santa Fe Brewing Co, Santa Fe, NM. Black color with a small to mid-size cream tan head. Coffee, crème brûlée, vanilla, roasted malt and ashy dryness in the aroma. Dry dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and vanilla in the flavor. Coffee, dryness and roasted malt.
4.2 12 oz. can from Freshcraft, Denver. Dark brown pour with a creamy beige head. Aroma of rich roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Taste of espresso, mocha, and light floral hops. Pleasant lingering bitterness. Nicely done.
4.1 This is really a phenomenal coffee stout. Lots of body lots of flavor. Aroma and flavor coffee but not overly bitter. Great overall beer. Thin fading head. Body is thick but not syrupy.
3.5 A good imperial stout, not very smoky but pretty bitter finish. I don’t really get the java flavoring either.
3.5 36cl bottle shared at Leighton’s garbage share. Many thanks to Leighton for this one. It pours a clean brown color with some ruby edges and a small beige head. Aroma is roasty and chocolatey with light wood and cocoa nibs. Taste is also medium sweet with notes of cocoa, vanilla and wood. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, tasty
3.8 Bottle shared at Leightons gaff , 19/09/2016. Many thanks. A reddy chestnut brown coloured pour with a halo of mid tan head. Aroma is big rich smoked roasted coffee, rich dark choc, coffee bean, ash, pepper. Flavour is composed of semi sweet rich coffee bean, pepper, veg, milky roast. Palate is medium sweet rounded, frothy carbonation. Like it a lot.
3.7 Can shared in London - picked up in the US. Pours deep brown with a creamy, beige head. Hearty mocha in the nose, milk chocolate, burnt toast. Medium sweet flavour with milky coffee, ashy roast, baking cocoa, burnt marshmallows. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet finish with more cocoa, milk chocolate, roast, coffee beans. Nice beer.
3.4 Can this to LKS. it pours darkest brown with a medium tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, loads of coffee character, coffee, milk chocolate, earth and light toast. The taste is smooth, rich roast, bitter - sweet, coffee grounds, coffee cake, dried fruits, earth and toasty nut with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent for style.
3.5 Can split at Bespin, thanks to Leighton, 19/09/16. Rich mahogany brown topped with a decent tan swirl. Nose is toffee, light charr, coffee tones, brown bread, toasted brown sugars. Taste comprises richer coffee grinds, cocoa rub, tiramisu, brown sugar, roast malt, light peppery spice. Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, strong coffee profile in the close. Decent enough coffee impy.
3.8 Deep dark brown coloured body with a very small, perhaps a single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of rich chocolate, coffee, malt, earth and way more chocolate - very strong in the nose. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong chocolate and roasted malt flavours with a lot of nuts, earth, caramel and lactose all noticeable with a big rich chocolate finish. Aftertaste shows the smallest amount of nuts around with a bit of roasted malt, but the coffee and rich milk chocolate are always present. Overall, a nice rich beer that seems more like a sweet stout to me on the high alcohol side, but not like an imperial stout at all. Regardless, it’s good and you should try it if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce can . purchased from Spec’s Liqour in Dallas, Texas on 11-November-2015 for US$2,52 sampled at home in Washington on 06-September-2016
3.9 4/VII/16 - 12Fl. Oz. can @ Adam Jackson Tasting Without Adam Jackson - BB: 6/VI/15 (?) (2016-733) Thanks to ElManana+1 for sharing the bottle! Clear dark brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: seem like I didn’t write anything down... ouch. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty roasted, sweet, caramel, coffee, bitter touch, cocoa powder. Aftertaste: coffee, pretty bitter, very roasted, charcoal, hoppy, caramel, a tad smoky.
3.6 Pours a black color with no light penetration. Solid brown head. Single note nose of a dark roasted coffee, Medium mouthfeel, This is a decent stout, the problems I have with it is the astringency from the coffee like it was put in at a really high temperature and it is a little dryer than I would like for an imperial stout.
3.8 Santa Fe Imperial Coffee Porter 8% Can from Argonaut in Denver, shared in Suma. A cola brown color with a beige head and a big coffee aroma. Medium bodied with a dry finish. The taste is like a sweet milk coffee, lactose? A solid beer that goes goes down smooth.
