Schell Caramel Bock

Schell Caramel Bock

Since 1860, Schell’s Bock meant spring was around the corner. And until recently, tradition and climate dictated the seasonality of Bock beers. Today, with the ability to control strict brewing environments, we’re able to usher in a new tradition—August Schell Caramel Bock, available year-round.

This medium-bodied, dark copper beer sports a light caramel flavor with a hint of malt sweetness. We figured beer drinkers aren’t seasonal, so why should beer be?

3.4 12 oz bottle out of a sampler pack. Has a dark copper color and a small off white head. The beer is slightly sweet and has a slight caramel taste to it. Overall, this is an enjoyable beer, that goes down smooth and is easy to drink.
3.0 Bottle, an enjoyable Bock. Poured a dark amber color, with a rich sweet aroma of malts and chocolate. Not as sweet as I thought it would be, but had notable caramel notes. A decent beer that I could get again.
3.7 Pours a very dark amber color with thin tan head. Medium body with rich caramel flavor. Quite sweet but a good beer for once in a while. Pretty good bock.
3.0 Brownish amber color, minimal head. Flavor is roasted malts and caramel sugar. Has a slightly burnt note. Medium body. Somewhat sweet. Not bad, but not as good as some of the other Schell beers.
3.3 Pours a light red-brown with a small amount of head. Aroma is burnt sugars/caramel and a bit of vanilla. Flavor is caramel and malts with a bit of bitterness to finish. The body is pretty light with some carbonation. An okay bock.
3.4 Appearance: Pours a clear, reddish-brown body with a small, creamy off-white head. Smell: Aroma full of caramel, toasted malts, and apple juice. Taste: Carnival caramel apples with a toasted malt flavor and plenty of sweetness. I don’t pick up much in the way of hops here. Sweetish, apple juicey finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel. Drinkability: It’s an okay bock, but the sweetness becomes a bit grating in the long run.
2.9 Bottle courtesy of csbosox. Pours a dark, cola-like, reddish brown with a frothy beige head. The nose is of slightly burnt caramel malt, light peat, and perhaps a touch of toffee. Fairly light-bodied with fine, tongue scrubbing carbonation and a lightly dry and astringent finish. The flavor is a dark, roasted caramel malt front with a burnt, peaty note and just a touch of hops at the woody, astringent finish.
3.5 12 oz bottle. Pours dark amber with brown hues. Small, off-white head that disapates quickly. Sweet nose, caramel, toffee, and a touch of roast. Taste is much the same, caramel and toffee backbone with a touch of roasted malt. No real hop bitterness. Crisp finish, no real after. I just got the mix case at the local distributor, and it had the ’06 Snowstorm in it, so I have no clue whether or not this is new or a year old. Either way it is a decent brew, nothing special, but tasty nonetheless.
2.9 Pours a clear copper with a small amount of white head that dies quick. Smells of toasted grain malt and a little toffee. Tastes the same. Light in the mouth with a lot of carbonation. Drink it all day if you like it but Id rather find a different beer to session.
4.0 Pours a dark almost brick red with a noisy frothing head. Yes noisy....snap, crackle and pop. Nice sour-mash and malt nose. Full body gulps deliver a hardy malt flavor but if you sip it you can find a lot of little particulars. Rich caramel, malt, tanginess maybe a little metallic and some light fruit undertones.
3.3 Courtesy jsquire. Call me nuts but I enjoyed this. It’s a little too sweet and simple, reminding me more of an Ofest than a bock. Strong caramel and toffee taste, and weak notes of tea and hay. Too thin on the mouthfeel and overall simplistic, but very drinkable.
3.4 A very nice dunkler bock. Aroma was so so. Could smell dark malt with a hint of caramel. Pour was a beautiful dark brown with a 2 finger tan head which left quickly. Taste was very drinkable. Strong iced tea flavor with some dark malt and not much else. Nicely carbonated and delicious.
2.9 Pours out a nice dark brown color with a light tan head. Light sweet aroma. Upon tasting the Caramel/malt flavor is in there, but a little watery and under powered. The nice rich color fools the palate thinking there should be more flavor. A small sips flavor stays fairly consistent from beginning to end. My 12 oz. serving left very little lacing behind as well as my high expectations for this beer. An average Bock.
3.2 I think this beer is a little bit under raed. It has nice caramel character, its just a bit weak and watery.
3.1 Poured a brown/ruby color with a small off-white head that disappeared pretty quickly. Aroma is light, but of caramel malt. Flavor is of caramel malt and toffee. Mouthfeel is good as carbonation is soft. Pretty easy drinker this one. I would have again, but wouldnt go out of my way to seek out.
3.4 Aroma is a mild caramel scent. Color is a crisp brown with very low carbonation and a fair head. Taste caramel and malt. Starting with a medium body it goes down very smooth with a sweet taste coming in. Finish a sweet malt flavor backed by a faint hop flavor. Nice beer.
3.1 12oz bottle-A dark brown body with a small tan head with an aroma of caramel, toffee, and dark malts. Taste of caramel, toffee, coffee, and sweetness. Not a bad bock. Nice flavors.
2.8 Pour is a dark brown with a average tan head. Aroma is nothing to write home about, just some sweetness is all. Flavor is a little more decent. Some caramel malt with a touch of dark fruit. Still this is sub-par for a bock.
3.1 Date: 03/10/2007 Mode: Bottle Source: Blind Tasting clear dark amber, wispy off white head, strong sweet caramel malt aroma with a hint of spices, a bit thin, rich caramel malt flavor, well tempered sweetness Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 8/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 11/20 Rating: 3.1/5.0 Drinkability: /10 Score: **/4
3.3 Bottle. Very dark pour and a thick head. A subtle, sweet aroma. The sweetness in the flavor is subtle too. Just a decent bock, a hell of a lot better than Huber not nearly as good as Anchor.
2.7 Dark red amber. Beige head. More cardboard than caramel in the aroma. Sugary flavoured body. A bit of burnt sugar. Not unpleasant though somewhat sweet. I would have guessed as a caramelized Amber.
3.8 Found this one bottled in Duluth, Minnesota. Clear, very dark brown oily pour with a thick, fluffly light brown head, mild camelly chocolate mocha nose, smooth kopi manis tastes, very sweet finish. This was very good.
2.9 Brown, low carbonation appearance. The aroma is indeed caramel-like. The caramel flavor is not overpowering, but the malt is. It’s an average beer smoothness-wise. In fact, it’s average overall as well; I can see why some people would like this, but I really probably won’t buy it anymore myself.
3.1 12 ounce bottle. Shaker glass. Deep amber with a small tan head. Aroma - roast malt and caramel. The taste was not surprisingly roast malt and caramel with a touch of sweetness and a hint of smoke. It was a bit thin though, which seems to be an issue for a lot of Schell’s beers.
2.9 I never met a Bock I didn’t like. This one has a nice thick slightly carbonated head. Smooth rich flavor.
2.6 12oz from a multipack from Milwaukee’s very own discount liqour. A brown ruby color with thin 1 cm high tan head. Slight malty lager aroma. Flavor of caramel, sweet malt, very slight bittering hops, some red fruit and grain. Med creamy body. Pretty plain, but not bad.
2.6 Pours cloudy brown with a very thin tan head. Nose is caramel, water, and a little plasticky. Flavor of caramel, apple, and a strong smoke finish. Thin, watery mouthfeel. I don’t like it that much.
2.5 Bottle poured into a beer mug. Pours brown with a average size creamy light brown head that fades away rather quickly, leaving no lacing. Looking at the glass it looks quite fizzy. The aroma is slightly caramel malt with a metallic aroma. No hop aroma. The flavor is slightly caramel with little to no hop flavor and a slight metallic taste. The body is light to medium with a watery texture and lively carbonation. Overall I was not to impressed, it was kind of bland, I was expecting a littl more carame.
2.6 12 oz. bottle. Pours a very dark amber color with slight beige head. Aroma is caramel malt, sweet sugary smells and some fruity, berry aromas. Not two much flavor, all in all. Some hints of strawberry and raspberry and a little lingering resinous bitterness. Very light mouthfeel, bordering on wateriness. Way too fizzy, as well.
2.5 Bland bock with thin body. Some carmel aroma and taste---but weak. Copper brown color.
