Schell Pale Ale

Schell Pale Ale

This beer was brewed in celebration of the 135th Anniversary of Schell’s several years ago. It was so popular, we re-introduced it under the name German Pale Ale.

Pale Ale is really a hybrid—the best characteristics of an India Pale Ale’s English malts and hops, combined with a German Alt yeast. It is medium in color, with a pronounced bitterness and a pleasant flowery hop aroma. Schell’s is the only brewery that produces this particular beer style.

Ingredients: Pale 2 Row, Baird’s Carastan, Baird’s Munich, and Cara Pilsner malts, Chinook, Cascade, and Kent Golding hops.

2.6 Pours bronze like amber color with vanishing white medium foam head. Has a weird citrus skin taste like an orange or grapefruit peel. Weird aftertaste that is almost like a plastic taste. Kind of confusing on the palate.
3.3 12oz bottle. Pours a clear amber color with one finger foamy white head that settles quickly but laces the glass. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of citrus, grapefruit, light spice, honey, touch of caramel. Flavor is sweet and floral with similar notes of citrus, grapefruit, light pine, caramel. Generally light to medium body to a floral hop finish. Not bad.
2.9 A golden ale with small white head. It has a very hoppy floral and grass aroma. The flavor starts out well-balanced with malt and hops, but it finishes bitter and very dry, almost dusty.
3.4 Pours a deep golden color with a very big, dense frothy white head. Aroma is a very distinct light citrus note of Cascade, light flowery note and some sweetness at the very end. Flavor has a nice toasted malt flavor, smooth citrus, some grassy hops notes as well, with a sweet malty ending and quick, sharp bitter hop bite. Light/moderate in density, very fine carbonation is perfect for this brew and there is fantastic white lacing left on the glass. The brew has a very balanced profile with the flavor having a solid hop presence without being over done. A great brew for every day drinking.
3.8 Golden color with a thick off white head, lots of small carbonation bubbles. Aroma is clean with a simple honeyed malt and a lemon zest. Nice and light smell. The flavor is clean with a butter malt and wheat then a citrus smack and finishing with a crisp hop to dry the palate. This is a very neat American pale ale.
3.5 Nice caramel aroma. Right color for a pale ale. It’s just like the commericial description. It’s definitely has that german taste from the yeast. A bit like a Marzen, with a little more bitterness IMHO. A good drinkable beer.
2.5 Appearance: A medium amber color with a very thin white head. The head was gone instantly. There is a light steady stream of carbonation rising to the top. Smell: Very light on the nose. Grapefruit, lemon, and spices mae up the majority of the smells in this one. Nothing too stand out though. Taste: Malty and bitter which is to be expected. Like the Pilsner I just had there is a metallic taste to it. Mouthfeel/drinkability: Medium bodied and highly carbonated. It is dry like a wine. I was a bit disappointed in this one.
2.7 Source: 12 oz bottle from a sampler purchased at Friar Tuck’s in Peoria. Glass: Poured into a 10 oz lager glass. Appearance: Clear gold pour with a two finger cream colored head. Aroma: Fairly Muted. Notes of bready malt and faint citrus. Flavor: Slightly astringent. Metallic finish. Lingering bitterness. Palate: Medium body with solid carbonation and a clean mouthfeel. Overall: Average beer. Not very impressive, but drinkable. Won’t buy again.
3.7 12oz bottle. Filtered tan-orange color. Nice foamy head, lots of lively carbonation bubbles. Sweet hoppy aroma, with a touch of macro factory freshness. The hop flavor is rather intense, a pleasant surprise. Thick and resinous, definitely walking the line between an APA and IPA. Earthy and rich. Solid bitterness. Underrated.
3.1 Bottle courtesy of MatSciGuy. Pours copper/gold wit a white head. Smells of caramel light citrus. Tastes spicy and grassy with a light caramelly finish.
2.0 Bottle. Pours a decent golden orange with a nice frothy head of white. Aroma is retarded floral notes with buttery hops. Flavor is expired grapefruit and dull floral notes. Watery mouthfeel. Forgettable.
3.1 Pours light gold with a 2 finger off white yellowish head, good retention, spotty lacing. Aroma is pine and floral hops along with some metallic malt notes. Flavor is pine, and herbal hops, malt notes are bread, and some dry biscuits and a tiny bit nutty as it warms. There is a sort of walnut skin, metallic bitterness that seems to show up in most of Schells brews that I dont find too endearing generally, but it kind of seems to find a home here. Nice long bitter finish, maybe a bit too long.
3.2 Tasting Three Cellars Milwaukee. Another fine brew from Schell ! Good dose of hops and slight spices. Very smooth.
2.6 Poors a golden color with virtually no head. Hoppy aroma of citrus and pine. This is definitely not my style of beer. Too hoppy and bitter for me. Although the malts did come through a bit more as it warmed up.
3.3 Courtesy of Juart about a year ago (oops). Pours a deep honey amber orange with tons of sediment. A thick foamy head that has a little bit of lasting power. Nose is pine and flowery hops with some apple juice and a slight metallic note. The flavor has a slight fruity sweetness and a bitter that cuts through at the end, but just has tons of metallic rusty flavors and aromas. I’m sure this is my own fault for forgetting about it for so long. The hop character is a little weak now but it was probably once pretty decent. It does have a pretty solid full body.
3.2 Poured a clear brown color. Aroma of hops. Tasted of hops with a bitter finish. Superb overall beer, and a great pale ale.
3.5 Because it is from Schell, this is a very easy drinking Pale Ale, drinkable amounts of citrus hops, malt and light sweetness, with just a touch of bitter. A taste I would never tire of.
3.1 I’m not into Pale Ales much but this one alright. Good coIor and flavor. But I really diidn’t like the finish. It was kind of bitter...bitter in a bad way.
3.2 [Bottle] Pours a clear copper with a medium soapy head. Aroma is citric hops, and a little bit of malt. Flavor is a bit thin, but not bad. Typical hop profile with a little malt in the background.
3.5 Not bad actually. Probably my favorite out of the variety pack. I got a lot of malt characters along with a hint of caramel towards the finish. Hop bitterness was just right balancing quite well with the rest of the flavors. Would buy again.
3.1 Light amber-orange with a thinnish head. Surprisingly malty (English slant). Big caramel. Moderate amount of snappy, grassy hops. Overall, I thought it was a pretty agreeable, nicely balanced pale. Reminded me of some Canadian “IPAs” I’ve had.
2.9 Pale amber with a big fluffy off-white head. Mild un-noticable aroma. Taste is malty sweet with a medium hop bitterness and some citrus. They claim it’s a hybrid between an IPA and an Alt. That’s pretty close. It’s tasty and well balanced, but nothing real special.
3.4 Bottle poured to glass. Nice creamy 3 finger head on a deep amber brew. Sweet malty flavor followed by a grapefruit hop aroma and flavor. Well Balanced drink.
3.0 Sampled from bottle: Pours a light copper colour with a small white head. Hints of caramel, flowers, bread and grapefruit on the nose. Taste is well carbonated, citrusy with soft piney notes in the finish. Your typical APA.
3.3 Unfiltered orange with floaties and a medium quickly dissipating white head. Aroma of citrus, light sweet malts and light floral hops. Taste is of light sweet malts followed by a citrus hop finish. Notes of diacetyl in there. Light bitter finish and easy to drink.
3.4 Bottle. Aroma of hops and fruit. Taste is comprised of malts, and fruit with a dry slightly bitter hop aftertaste. Lingers on the palate awhile.
2.7 Brilliant copper, 1 finger head, scant lacing. Decent malt up front, but old stale musty hops, more English IPA than American. Flavor has a decent floral/citrus combo, but malt fades to nothing. As it warms, more fruit comes through, more like yeasty esters, than hop character. Nothing special.
2.5 Bottle courtesy of dpjuart. Light fruity hop aroma, mild butterscotch-diacetyl character, hint of grapefruit or pineapple, too. Mild sweet malt undertones, with some caramel and brown sugar. Dark golden amber clear, with thin off-white lacing head. Medium to light watery body, with medium carbonation. Kinda dead. Starts with a bit of caramel maltiness, but mainly a decent bitterness from dull, slightly fruity hops. Mild chemical astringent bitterness, with papery bitter finish and light nutty-chalky after.
3.1 Pours amber with some bubbles and a medium white frothy head. Malty aroma, a little bit toasty / sour with a touch of hops. Very bitter first taste, slightly metallic with some sweet malt undertones. Average palate, a bit thin, and not very sticky considering the amount of malt.
3.1 From bottle... poured light amber color. Mild hoppy smell. Taste of a typical pale ale, but somewhat weak. Overall... decent.
