Schell Pilsner

Schell Pilsner

A shining example of the true European Pilsner style beer, Schell's Pilsner is brewed with 100 percent barley malt, where the imported German Hallertau hops flavor is showcased. Its full hop characteristic and delicate aroma were developed in Pilsn, Czechoslavakia around 1840. This style was widely copied by early American breweries. Over the years, however, it has been lost to the much lighter-bodied, low-hopped relatives we refer to as American "Premium" beer.

Schell's Pilsner has won many awards, including medals from the prestigious Great American Beer Festival.

Ingredients: 100% Pale malt, domestic Cascade, and imported Hallertau hops.

3.0 Pours a clear golden color with white head. Cereal grains and some light bread on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes clean.
3.0 Basic golden pilsner color nice head. Smell grassy straw hoppy. Taste easy drinking dry slight hop bite does have an interesting finish. Nice Midwest beer with hops.
3.2 Bottle, pours golden with a white head, slight sweet taste of malt, citrus, and honey, not bad
3.4 Picked up a single 12-oz bottle from Heritage Liquors, in Maplewood, MN. Pours a clear golden straw colored brew with an average sized off-white head that slowly dissipates to a thin film top and white ring. Aroma of golden grain malt, some grassy hops, a touch of honey and some pear. Taste is light to medium bodied, some average carbonation with flavors of golden grain malt, some grassy hops and a touch of saltine crackers. Finish is not as sharp/spicy as the 1984 version and a lighter clean cut aftertaste with some lingering bitterness.
2.8 Bottle: Clear, fizzy yellow-gold with a small white head. Slightly skunked grain malt aroma. Taste is vegetal, grassy bitter.... Ok, but seems slightly too far on the bitter side.
3.2 12 oz bottle pours bright and clear. Bright white head and nice lacing down the glass as I drink this new offering from Schell’s. Hops are grassy and there is a nice firm bitterness that I really enjoy in a pilsner. At first I thought I may have caught I hint of sulfur but it dissipated or I imagined it.
3.0 Bottle (courtesy of Atom). Lactic barley malt aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Sweet lightly creamy barley malt and moderately bitter hay flavor. Not bad.
2.6 Bottle - Pours clear pale yellow with a foamy off-white head. Nose is vegetal and grainy, with a touch of herbal hopping. Taste is grainy and lightly sour, with a hint of herbal bitterness. Thin and fluffy with lots of carbonation. Tastes a lot like the 1984.
3.7 12oz bottle pours a clear golden with a large off-white head. Aroma of doughy biscuit yeast, light honey, and mild grassy hops. Taste of pils malt, mild yeast, touch of honey, with a light presence of grassy hops, and a slight bitterness on the finish. An easy drinking well balanced Pilsener.
3.0 Pour from a 12 oz. bottle. Labeled as "August Schell Brewers and Bottlers 30th Anniversary Pilsner Series 2 - 2014." Consumed on 3-14-14. Floral aroma. Smell is metallic, but not in a bad way; mineral-y. Just a touch"beery," but not much so. Grass and hay scents. Not a bad smell at all, though not a good one. Pours a clear, pale, almost green-ish yellow, like Yellow Chartreause Liqueur. A few bubbles rise at a slow to moderate speed. Small to moderate amount of thin, nearly white head. Nice, sharp, and dry hoppiness. Enjoyable taste. A bit of honey in the flavor. A touch of lemon, brine, and vingegar, but not in a bad way. Mineral-y. Metallic finish. Not "beery" at all in flavor. Tangy, dry aftertaste. Soft, crisp, and quite lively (turning into frothy) in the palate. Good, classic lager palate. Easy to drink. This is a pleasant brew and much better than the 1984 or the Mandarina from this series (I haven’t yet sampled the Roggen as of this writing). I am trying to be a tougher rater, so I arguably am being too hard on this beer in my numeric assessment. It is pretty simple, but it hits the spot.
2.1 Tap at Pizza Luce Hopkins. Served in a pint glass. Aroma leaves a lot to be desired....the other reviews are pretty right on....definitely a grassy, earthy smell and taste. It reminds me of a cheap beer you?d bring college party. Maybe a slight step up. Taste falls off table (although it probably was never on) at the end. I would avoid this one.
2.8 Its a pretty basic, pretty decent pilsner. Bready, decent grassy hop profile. Tried at the brewery with Vaughn and Amanda.
3.2 As a pilsener this was quite nice flavourful and hoppy. Thanks GV for this one. Much better than most pilseners.
3.7 Best by 24JUN13 It’s a yellow beer with a solid sheet of fine, bone white foam that seems unrelenting. Smells like grain, hints of corn, some sweetness, some metal. Flavor is what I would consider pretty hoppy for the style; sharp musty hops with some hints of resin and metal alongside a nice crisp malt undertow. Medium bodied with moderate carb and a nice dry finish. Nice beer.
2.8 From a bottle in a variety pack. Pours yellow to light amber with quite a bit of white head. Light fresh taste with some hint of hops. Could be a little crisper but not bad. Much better than the "lights" or "lites".

2.5 Bottled. A light yellow beer with a white head. The aroma has notes of straw, malt, and grain. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and straw, leading to a bitter finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.
2.5 12 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and pale yellow with a small white head. Aroma is toasted malty and caramelish. Bitter, toasted malty and grassy. Grassy and cornish to rice finish. Dry and bitter.
2.9 12 oz bottle pours a pale golden color with moderate white head and a little lacing. Aroma has grass, grains, and some floral hops. Taste is slightly bitter with a short finish. Body is light with average carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. Nothing negative here, but nothing to rave about, either.
2.9 Nice easy drinker for a warm day - it is 20 outside (F not C)! Clear yellow in color with a large white head. Does remind me of the beer in Czech Republic, maybe a bit less bitter. Would not mind having a few of these after mowing the lawn.
3.0 Bottle pour into pilsner glass. Light yellow color with 1 finger brite white head. Smells slightly pungent - taste is watery bitter crispness.
3.0 Poured a nice mid-gold with a frothy head that faded slowly to lacing which remained throughout. Aroma was a mix of hops with a slight pear hue along with malts. Pearish hops predominate the taste although a nice malty backbone comes thru. Palate was nice. Overall a decent, drinkable pilsner.
3.4 Bottle. Clear light yellow pour, decent frothy head and a light crisp sweet floral aroma. Flavor is light and malt, crisp light hops and a little sweet dry fruit on the finish.Decent.
3.3 Pours a pale yellow with a white head formed from active carbonation. Aroma of light grain and earth. Taste is smooth and crisp with a peppery floral bite from the noble hops.
3.9 Clear light yellow good carbonation frothy light good retaining head. Aroma is sweet bread with a light refined fruit/floral sweet butter carmel almost. Tastey beer nice hop profile in a mildly bready slight sweet beer with citrus and spicey bittering, kind of floral with a nice tartness mildly lemon. This brewery never seems to let me down.
