Schell Stout

Schell Stout

Schell’s Stout has been chosen as our newest year round craft beer offering. As our 2006 Snow Storm, the Stout received so many requests to bring the beer back, we simply couldn’t ignore them. A departure from our traditional German style lagers, our Schell’s Stout is a London-Style Sweet Stout. If you enjoy the taste of coffee and chocolate, you’ll love this delicious brew. We used only the finest malts imported from Great Britain. Sure, it might cost a little more to brew, but we’re certain you’ll agree it’s worth it.

2.7 decent, easy drinking stout. pours dark brown with a lighter head than I’d expect. Nose of chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and bread dough. medium carbonation, flavors are lighter than I’d expect, mainly chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. on the thinner side. long, roasted malty finish.
0.5 The best of their regular beers. Pretty tasty and a nice mouthfeel. Still pretty middle of the road though.
3.6 Pour this and it’s black, yes as black as any beer I’ve seen. Taste is smoother than most stouts. I’ve had many and this one may be my favorite. Thanks!!!
3.9 Poured a nice color color, with not much of a head on it. Had a nice chocolate scent and had a very light smokiness flavor.
2.9 Bottle from Joe: pours dark brownish black with a faint off white head. Cooking chocolate, sugary, roasted malts. OK finish but lacking. Drinkable
3.4 Bottle. Poured dark brown color with medium to large brown frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium toasted malt and chocolate aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium toasted sweet malt flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.
3.3 Very straightforward stout with the typical bitter bite to it balanced by the malts, a little boring but still a good example of the style.
1.8 Other than beating the tar out of Guinness this doesn’t do too much for me. PAss.
3.8 Pour from a 12 oz bottle. Dark brew with on finger of tan head that settles down to a persistent froth. Aroma of roasted (burnt) malts with coffee overtones. Fine taste of burnt malts. coffee, chocolate, a sweet but not cloying finish. Palate is satisfying and good. Very refined and well balanced.
3.2 Dark pour with a brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, some sweetness. Taste is a little thin, roasted malt. Nice lacing, little creamy.
3.6 Bottle. Very dark brown/black pour, quickly dissipating carbonation and a nice light and sweet chocolate chip and vanilla aroma. Flavor is light peat and smoke, some sweet lactose and finishes a little thin. Not bad.
3.1 Pours dark brown almost black with off white head, aroma includes notes of roast, some caramel, burnt malt. Taste is light with notes of coffee, roast, touch of caramel, and a burnt finish. Not bad, would like a bit more flavor but its decent.
3.5 Poured from 12oz bottle, pours black with a tan head, aroma is of sweet malt with some notes of chocolate, flavor is decent but it seems a little thin overall, nice chocolate touches in the finish.
3.5 12 ounce bottle thanks to Kevin. Pours a black/brown color with a medium off-white head. A rich milky and chocolate nose, some roast. The flavor is a similar lactose driven stout, some chocolates, light toasted malts. Very nice.
3.6 Black, nearly opaque. Very malty, roasted coffee flavor, a little smoky. Smooth drinking, sweet start with bitter finish. Aftertaste detracts. Medium heavy body, syrup-like.
4.1 This one is a Stout, which means it can’t do any wrong to my tongue. Good job!
3.1 Bottle. Pour is thin brown black with a nice kahki soapy head. Aroma has a cheap coffee scent followed by malt and soy. Taste is watery coffee and malt with some faint bitters. Palate is thin water with a gritty and chaulky finish.
2.1 Schells? Close to German, "Schnell" which means "Quick!" Schnell, Schnell, get a Blatz, this Schells ain’t worth crap!"
3.4 Pours nearly black, with a foamy tan head - some intense roast in the nose, with espresso, bittersweet chocolate, sweet cream - medium to light body for the style - the flavor reminds me of some of my early stout and porter experiences when I first got into beer (London Porter, Shakespeare Stout) - quite a bit of chocolate and anise, with moderate roast and mid to low bitterness - lingering cream sweetness in the finish - not as intense as most look for in a stout, but pretty tasty and balanced.
3.8 Poured into a pint glass. Color is deep black, slightly brown when held up to the light. Thick brown head, that leaves great lacing. Aroma is of smoked/roasted malts along with slight grassy hops. Some chocolate as well. Taste is of smoked almonds. Chocolate flavored. The grassy hops become more present. Finally, a burnt caramel taste is noted. Mouthfeel is a little bitter at first from the hops, but then it becomes smooth and creamy. Full bodied. Decent amount of carbonation. Overall, this is a very easy to drink for a stout. I could easily enjoy a few of these. This is a must try if you are into lighter stouts. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 07-18-2008 22:37:17
2.9 Thin dark brown pour with a frothy tan head. Aroma of mild chocolate malts and coffee. The body is a bit thin for a stout, with the flavor following suit. Light in carbonation, hops, and alcohol. Moderate coffee and chocolate content.
2.6 The Schell’s Stout has a pure black appearance, as expected. Its aroma contains much dark malt, reminiscent of chocolate. As I sip, I taste barley as well, but not much else. My actual taste buds (as opposed to my sense of smell) notice very little. The palate of this beer is typical for stouts; somewhat thick, and also still a bit fizzy. This isn’t a bad beer, but I still felt disappointed.
4.2 12 oz bottle from TC Craft. Deep brown colored pour with a thick creamy tan head. Roasted chocolate aroma. Sweet, creamy, chocolate flavor with a sweet finish.
3.3 Eagan, Mn, - Byerly’s Grocery store - 12 oz bottle. Dark crimson fading into black pour. Earthy aroma with hints of black earth, licorice and coffee. Flavor has some nice licorice accents, plenty of chocolate and coffee with a finish of black earth. Mouthfeel is nice and sticky, Schell raised the bar on this one.
3.4 Aroma of chocolate, mild cofffee, and roasted malts. Flavors of smoke, chocolate, coffee, and a hint of vanilla. Finishes slightly fruity and dry. Nice feeling on the tongue and the flavors swirl. My only complaint is the watery mouthfeel mid bottle. Overall, a good one.
3.0 Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malt with a nice chocolate to round things out. Flavor is again subtle chocolate with some toasted matls. Not mind blowing but this is a decent beer worthy of a try.
3.7 Very deep amber color with a thick tan head. Roasted coffee aroma, sweet chocolate taste. Sweet, rich and malty yet rather smooth with a bitter finish.
2.9 Bottle (small sample) - packaged under the "Schells Stout" label. Dark brown pour, mild roasty nose. Some nuttiness on taste, and kind of thin.
3.1 Black pour with robust tan head. Nose is darkly roasted barley malt and chocolate. Flavors of roasted barley, chocolate, coffee, earthy hop bitterness, cream. I drank one bottle and used the other one for making a robust beer bread (using spent grain, too) and the bread was really good. Surprised by this one.
3.5 Bottle- Schell’s Stout. Pour is black with a thin brown head. Aroma is milk chocolate, cinnamon, roasted malt and a faint hop backdrop. Solid flavor with a nice smooth roasty finish. A surprise, and very good.
