Schlafly Export IPA (2012 and earlier)

Schlafly Export IPA (2012 and earlier)

This full-bodied traditional English-style ale is brewed with a high gravity and extra hops, which originally helped to preserve the beer on long voyages from England to India.

3.3 Smells like dark tea, which is weird, but different at least. Head is a little small, but the lacing is very good - extra point for that. Kind of mild at first, but then woody hops make a nice appearance. This goes really well with the parsley I am eating right now. A grassy IPA. Mouthfeel is quite light, yet not what I would call smooth. I feel like I am licking a giant tea leaf or something. An interesting take, very English IPA, but not one of my favorites.
3.5 Bottle. Pale yellow, clingy white head, some suspended stuff. Very sharp bitter taste, full flavored finish. Good IPA.
3.9 Bottle (3/9/12). Appearance: very clear golden orange color, foamy white head. Aroma: I really get sweet bready malts, almost brown sugar as the main player with some citrus hoppiness. Taste: Again sweet bready malts, very earthy, with tropical and orange fruitiness throughout with a quite bitter hoppy finish; interestingly balanced and complex to me. Mouthfeel: medium thin creaminess, with mild carbonation, a nice dry bitter finish. Overall: this is a surprisingly well balance IPA with clear malt and hop presence blending well with a nice bitter hop finish. I’m seriously doubting the British troops had anything this good!
3.8 Bottle - average size thick head, medium copper color, sweet malt aroma, well balanced with sweet malt and a nice hop flavor
4.1 Awesome high-gravity IPA. The hops are pine and earth. Taste is not too dry but still bitter.
3.2 8/18/11 schlafly export ipa. bottled 3/17/11 pale hazy orange straw with a white head. a is pale malt, pine, a little sweaty, earty hops, spice, citrus.... very mild. f is the same... muted but dry and hoppy. creamy and soft. meh. not bad, it just doesnt pop. 6/3/6/3/14
3.5 Pour is a hazy copper/yellow with a large, bubbly white head. Aroma is of pine needle hops, leaves, and light citrus. Flavor is on the yeasty side with nice pine needle resin and lemon peel in the body. Malty, caramel finish. Dry, light to medium bodied.
3.8 12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into a shaker. Pours a light orange with about 1 finger of white head. Aroma of citrus hops. Taste is medium bitter and lightly sweet. Medium bodied with lively carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, very good beer. I wish it were available year round.
3.6 lightly hazy golden amber minimal white head fades quickly... orange, tealike, light malts, turkey hill orange ice tea, though not really ipa like... somewhat malty, orange hops, orange dominates nicely... lively medium bodied, good, but the orange dominates in an odd way.,.
3.4 Had on Draft @ Waldo’s Pizza, Kansas City .. . Pours gold, medium head .. . why does it have to be zany? .. .light bitterness: light sap, apricot, and english hops .. . very well masked abv .. . party down, yes!
2.7 Weak malt and weaker honey nose. Cloudy orange, white chunks, headless. Overripe oranges, and lemons. Some floral notes appear at midpalate. Drinks ok, but doesn’t impress.
3.5 12oz bottle-thanks to JustinH for trading–pours a retaining off white head and hazy gold color. Aroma is spice, light malt-bready. Taste is spice hops, light/medium malt-bready. Good carbonation.
3.5 I very much enjoyed this IPA. Nice bold hop flavor and good alcohol. A well made homage to English IPAs.
3.6 Pours a slightly hazy golden bronze with a spotty-lacing white head. Aroma has a good fresh grapefruity hoppiness and some toasty, lightly sweet caramel malt. Body starts with a nice malty sweetness and good, fresh grapefruity bittering and flavor hoppy balance.
3.2 Hazy gold, lots of particles, large frothy head. Aroma of toffee, English hops, floral, fruity, herbal. Taste is malt heavy, thick body, lots of sweet fruit and floral hop, plum, peach and so on.
3.0 12 ounce bottle. a nice drinkable refreshing beer to style. golden color with a medium light head. Not too hoppy.
3.9 12oz bottle, bottled "with love" on 3/28/2011. Golden orange color, quickly fading half-finger head. LOTS and LOTS of ground-parmesan-sized floaties! In awe of that, mostly, not sure if I should be worried.. Bottoms up.. Suprisingly not that bitter, for an IPA! A nice change of pace. The floaties make awesome swirling movements with every swig, bumping appearance up to a 5. Very drinkable. Aroma is more subtle, less citrus/floral than I’m used to, yeastier maybe? I like it, though. Quite a unique IPA! But what does "export" mean? If it’s brewed in USA, and I’m in USA, I believe that’s "domestic"...
3.9 Bottle at Busboys & Poets. Bright deep golden color, medium white head. Aroma of light pine. Taste has a balanced bitterness with citrus and pine. Very nice.
3.0 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Aromas of yeast and some bitter hops. Not much aroma at all, and it was warm enough. Cloudy orangish beer with a white head. Taste was doughlike and bitter from the hops. Long bitter finish, but not my favorite. The hops are not citrus, or floral, but just bitter on the front of your tongue. Overall, not too bad, but probably would not seek this one out.
3.9 12 oz bottle, fresh 2011 version: pale straw, large bubble white head. citrusy, piney aroma with notes of that hard, dusty, pink bubble gum...palete is creamy and nicely carbonated...which brings the fruity flavours throughout the mouth. Light caramel and honey provide a soft and tasty finish. Though the 8% abv makes it tough...I could drink these all night.
3.9 Nice Orangish Golden color with anotable white head that holds pretty well. Some light citrus notes and plenty of Dry Hops on tap at Churchkey
3.4 It’s a quite nice English IPA, very drinkable! But, there’s nothing special about it - this is not a knock however as I could consume said export all night long. Tea aspects, honey.
3.8 Bottle- Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a small head and just a bit of lacing. There were also a few floaties to give it a bit of character. Has a laid back aroma, mostly of fresh citrus and grain with a bit of herbal fragrance thrown in. Starts with a nice citrus bitterness, then a mix of fresh grain and malt for a touch of sweetness and a dry finish. Medium body, crisp & clean. No trace of the alcohol. Well balanced. Good stuff, goes down easy and no problem drinking a few with out even trying. A good English IPA that is laid back and not an in-your-face style.
2.9 Aroma of pine sap and spices (nutmeg?). Appears thick and Orange with a fluffy head. Tastes of bitters and pine with a strong alcohol feel. A little brackish for my taste but ok.
3.3 Clean aroma with little smell detectable. Pours copper and cloudy, but no sediment. Moderate hop flavor on the front with clean finish. Overall decently good IPA.
3.4 It poured a golden amber with a white head. The aroma was of grapefruit, fruits and toffee. The taste was fruity and citriucy with piney resins. Not a bad Export IPA.
3.5 Whole Foods Market six-pack ($12.99): Pours a really weird cloudy and sediment filled orange color and a white head with lacing. Aroma is on the maltier side of IPAs with a more subdued fruit and hop presence. The taste is bitter towards the finish, but in no way intensely hoppy like a West Coast example. It is a little sweet and does do a good job of covering up the high alcohol content. For that matter, it is rather smooth and easy to drink. A kind of strange example of an IPA, but pretty good.
3.6 12 oz bottle dated late March 2011. Poured half and half into separate identical tasting glasses with Ryan. His was clear and orange in color with some copper, amber and brown. Pretty. My pour was similar in color but with a lot of particulate and yeast. So not clear at all and very hazy. Very different. The nose followed suit. His smelled more fresh and crisp. My beer more yeasty and funky. Both had loads of orange citrus. Hops are there. Much more intensely for flavor than bitterness. Not that this beer isn’t a bitter IPA, it is. It’s just that the fresh hop flavors are there full force. Very tasty. Highly recommended right now while it’s fresh.
3.0 Pours a Light orange with a decent head. It’s got a nice flora, pine resin aroma. The taste is bitter and fruity. It’s a bit too sweet and too piney for my liking.
3.5 12oz bottle. Pours a dull coppery color with a wispy, off white head. Aroma is leafy hops, citrus and caramel. Starts with a short lived caramel malt flavor with only a bit of mild sweetness, that is followed by citrusy grapefruit hoppiness. Finishes with a moderate citric bitterness. Smooth and easy going down. Light to medium carbonation with a light creaminess.
