3.5 12oz bottle in a shaker. Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma of toasted malts with nuts and caramel. Flavor the same. Average texture. A decent Scotch ale.
2.9 Bottle; Pour is like Caramel - off white head that retains fairly well, actually. Caramel, and a fairly typical malt and peat profile on the nose, with a roastiness as well. I’ll be honest - this one was quite disappointing for me. Toffee, peat, slight dark fruits, with a dry finish. But... it just doesn’t work. The slightly roasted/smoky feel dominates on the finish, leaving a slightly negative impression there -
3.7 Ah, another fine Schlafly brew... I purchased this one from D.E.B.’s (Formerly "Liquor Direct") across the Ohio River in Covington, KY... where they make the jelly! This brew pours a dark brown, with a finely bubbled tan head and a very caramel-like malt aroma. Tastewise, this is a fine beer, with a sweet, faintly coffee like taste! It’s a good beer!
3.5 A nice dark brown and ruby colored body. The aroma is rich roasted coffee and a little smoke. The taste is lightly smoked with a very pleasant trace of caramel. This beer is extremely drinkable. A good beer for the season.
3.0 Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, light peat and acidic apple. Appearance is dark cola brown with 1/4 in. tan head. Flavor matches the nose, with a little more peat evident upon warming; also, some toasted nuts in the finish. Palate is creamy. A quite drinkable, but not so memorable, scotch ale. Perhaps the drinkability was an emphasis, which was accomplished, but at the seeming expense of muted flavors.
3.5 bottle - Pours amber and smells of caramel malt and dark fruit. It tastes of sweet malt with ample caramel as it intends. This medium bodied brew is smooth, lightly toasty, and enjoyable.
3.6 This scotch ale pours a amber brown color from a 12oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is scotch, smoke, wood and sweet. A medium bodied scotch ale. Malts are brown sugar and molasses, peat and smoke. Hops are slightly citrusy. Nice balance. Smooth taste. Neat peat and smoke flavors. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
4.2 I had this at Riddle’s in STL and liked it. Darker than an amber but lighter than an amber bock. Easy to drink. Jan 2010.
3.4 12oz bottle from Lucas Liquors. Aromas of caramel, toasted malts, and some toffee. Flavors of toffee, caramel, toasted malts, and a little peat. Pretty drinkable scotch ale. Decent beer.
3.5 Dark mohogany pour with a brown head. Aroma is sweet caramel, cocoa, and some peat. Taste is low carbonation, semi-sweet, chocolate, faint peat..
3.1 Pours a deep red/brown. Aroma of molasses, toasted malt and autumn leaves. Flavor of earth, toasted malt, molasses and dried fruit. Has a creamy mouthfeel. Not too bad
3.0 Parts of a sampler tray at the Taproom. Nice malty flavour. Enjoyed this one. Would like to try a pint someday
3.2 12oz bottle. Pours a cloudy, amber colored body with a finger-width, tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is sweeter caramels with some peat and fruit. A bit grainy with a touch of bread and some toffee. Flavor is similar. Fruity caramels up front with a grainy and earthy, caramel sweetness. A good amount of peat with a light smoke and some bready, toasty toffees. Finishes with a light bitterness and a touch of spiced smoke for a dry, lengthy aftertaste. Medium body and light carbonation. Overall, a decent scotch ale. Fairly tasty and somewhat sweet with a nice, balanced flavor. There are better, but this was alright.
3.0 Bottle pours a murky dark amber with a decent tan head. The head stay alright and laces okay. Aroma is malty with touches of caramel. Has a good carbonation. The flavor is good but a little on the mild side. Has a medium body. The texture is slick. A good finish and an okay aftertaste. Decent beer.
2.9 Bottle. Going to be hard to compete just a few hours after Great Divide’s good rendition. Nose is dark malts and (cigarette) smoke wafting, carrying up caramel and toffee. Clear medium-light ruby pour with a large, rocky beige head. Lightly watery body with some nice sweet malt thrusts, berry and lightly smoky toffee, a little childish in execution and hurt by the weak body. Tasty enough.
4.3 Great company and great beer -- had this in St. Louis. If only it was not seasonal.
2.8 12 ounce bottle. poured into 16 ounce long glass. slight brown ring carb. brown colour. nutty hoppy taste with thick aftertaste in back of mouth. tastes of hops and roast. hop flavor lingers in mouth. drinkable spring ale for a beginning beer connoissuer.
3.2 12oz bottle from 1/18/2010. Pours a dark brown with loads of ruby light shining through under a modest light biege head that barely leaves lacy drips. Smell is subdued caramel mixed with grainy malts. After the first sip, I thought this was vastly underrated. After five more, I was still thinking this should be around an 8 for Taste. 2/3 of the way through, it started to lose ground, as the heavy malt flavors all started to blend together and I lost that great caramel dancing on top of bread dough and it just became a heavy malt mixture. Still tasty, but I see why it’s not quite keeping up with competitors. Quite drinkable, but at only 6% ABV, it’s hardly a "Scotch" and more like a light Scottish.
2.8 Dark brown pour-off white head big caramel taste smooth and malty. Not one of the better scotch ales out there
3.5 Draft pint at Pi in St. Louis. Pours a clear, dark, reddish-brown color with a small tan head that leaves a ring around the inner edge of the glass and nothing else. Aroma of caramel malt, Scotch, dark fruits (cherry, dates, and raisin), wood, and toast. Flavor is boozy for a 6.2% ABV beer, staying true to the ’Scotch’ in the name, with notes of dark fruits, caramel malts, toffee, wood, brown sugar, and toast. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a boozy, malty mouthfeel and sweet boozy finish. Nice beer.
3.2 12oz - Sweet aroma or chocolate, caramel, toasted malts and a touch of hops. Flavor is malty, sour with caramel and toffee. Palate is sticky. Drinkable.
3.2 Bottle courtesy of barleyPops – thanks Duane! Pours clear dark amber with a one finger beige head that leaves spotty lacing. The nose is caramel malt, fruit and light spicy peat. The taste is malt, dark fruits, roasted nuts and brown sugar with a light bitter dark chocolate finish. Medium semi-creamy mouthfeel. Decent Scotch Ale. Thanks again Duane!
3.4 Dark Amber color with a fairly thin head. Very aromatic though, with a prominent roasty component matched by a fresh oatmeal bready quality. When first on the palate the toasted chocolate toffee notes dominate, but are a little tame for this style. Some oatmeal stout qualities are present. Hops are definitely there to balance things out, but the main virtue of this beer is the maltiness for sure. Light to medium bodied mouthfeel which gives this beer very nice drinkability.
3.4 Pours dark ruby brown with a thin head. Aroma is earthy and dusty malt with a light smoke. Some burnt sugar, dark fruit and roasted malt nuttiness. Smokey roasted malt flavour. Light fruit and nut tones. Light bitter finish.
3.4 pours brown with red highlights. notes of caramel, fruit, and raison. has some urkel affiliations. sticky mouthfeel.
3.3 Bottle From Keg Liquor. Poured clear brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Good caramel malt and nutty aroma. Medium to full body with a sticky texture and flat carbonation. Medium toasted sweet flavor with a moderate sweet finish of moderate duration. Good beer.
3.3 12oz recent bonus, I think from beastiefan2k. Pours dark orange brown with a tan head. Nose is sweet with caramel malt. Taste is sweet and somewhat malty, and all in all basically decent.
3.4 Bottle courtesy of beastiefan2k. Pours brown with a thin tan head. Smells of fruit, roses, caramel, earthy, tea. Tastes spicy and sweet with a raisiny finish.
3.6 Draft at Old Chicago in Overland Park, Kansas. Pour is brown ruby with a smallish tan head. Decent lacing as the beer falls. Aroma is caramelly sweet malt with light peat smokiness behind the malt. Taste is the malt, lighter caramel than the nose and a nice flinty peat one top of everything. Nice scotch. Palate is drinkable - on the thin side of medium, the smokiness lingers nicely in the finish and it has fresh lively carbonation.
3.1 12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a clear reddish brown with a sparse tan head. Pretty subdued aroma, mostly caramel malt. Nice rich mouthfeel. Plenty of malt without being overly sweet. Fairly dry malty finish. Maybe a hint of smoke in the finish. Very easy drinking, sessionable beer, but nothing special.
