3.5 Soft and pleasant taste. Maybe a bit whisky-like, but not much. Somewhat watery.
1.1 14k gold pour. White head. Smoke? Barely. More toffee, overripe fruit and butter than anything. Flavor is sweet and lots of butter and fruit. The smoke flavor is barely noticeable. Not so great. Not even good.
Test vom 22.11.2005, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 14,7,6,5,7,6 - 6,85
3.0 Weird one cause there are different styles that this one seems to belong in, red ale, smoked, scottish ale, etc. very malty, sweet malt not bread malt, no hop characteristics. reddish brown color, transparent, small head. not a real standout.
2.9 25th February 2009 Clear amber beer with a smooth rich malt building in to a crisp alcoholic finish with a touch of brandy. Quite flavoursome if a little one dimensional.
3.0 Bourbon colored, pours with minimum head that completely disappears. Aroma and taste match well with lots of sweet malt. Easy carbonation with a slightly grassy taste balances things very well in the finish. note: RateBeer says this is no longer available. I’m glad to have had one.
3.0 Pours a clear copper color with a small off-white head. Aromas of malts, spice, and a hint of alcohol. The flavor is quite smooth with all malts and some dark fruits towards the finish. Decent Beer.
4.2 Abfullung Schloss Eggenberg--Mac Queen’s Nessie Original Red Ale--1999 11.2 oz. Bottle. 7.00% ABV. (4.5 / 5.0) Red Ale? Clear light straw color-gold hint. Big Bohemian Saaz spicy yeast front. Rich sweet spicy malt body. AleBock. Bock with hop influence and light fruit character. Big finish with light hop alcohol bite. Sampled 9/15/1999.
3.4 It’s not really red, but it is a golden color with a slight hint of red. Which is nice enough with what they were going for as it is the color of many a nice whisky. The head is really pretty, tight and fluffy with some heavy lacing. I’m catching a lot of nice floral clean german malt character from the aroma, along with a good bit of honey and a tiny bit of paint thinner alcohol. The smoke is very subdued here but it’s nice none the less. All in all the aroma reminds me of a nice enough Maibock, which may or may not have been what they were going for here. The smokiness shows up a lot more in the flavor of this beer and clashes a bit with the herbal bitterness on the sides of the tongue, which is very different from the malty sweetness that dominates the flavor of the beer. Seeing as how this is retired the bottle is at the very least a year old, if memory serves me correctly that sweetness was better balanced with smokiness in it’s younger age. There are some chocolate and earthy tones that peek their head out of the water every so often when drinking this as well. The palate seems sharp on the sides of the tongue while almost rich and almost syrupy on the top, not in the way many Barley Wines or Imperial Stouts can get syrupy, but more like in a cheap imitation maple syrup kind of way. This thing is likely not nearly in it’s prime but I sort of like where it’s going. I might have to pick up a few more bottles just to see what the future has in store for them.
2.4 33cl bottle, amber orange color, medium white head, malt aroma with slighty smoked hints, light sweet flavor with hops notes, smooth body, finish with some bitterness
3.4 Bottle in Vienna The beer is not all that red, really. Just a slightly dark gold. Good malty aroma, slightly sweet. Little head. Pretty nice. Not as heavy as the bock beers, though similar in maltiness and in having a touch of sweetness. Decent hops as well. Good bitter aftertaste. Not as peculiar or interesting as their Urbock, but pretty decent. There is a very nice malt flavor and aroma, although I personally can’t tell how whisky malt is different from any other. I was really hoping for something a little more smoky after seeing the label, though I will not complain.
3.0 Golden yellow pour with a thin white head. The aroma was malt, with a hint of smokiness to it. You tasted the malt up front followed by a little smoke at the end. The aftertaste was what I really remembered of this. The alcohol was more prominent as it warmed up.
2.9 7.3% Bottle pours golden orange with an off-white head. Aroma is heavy in caramel and sweet toasted malt. Flavor is primarily dominated with sweet malt but there is still a muted hop note in the background. Finish also shows slight amounts of peat and iodine. Definately seems to have held for it’s age, but as everyone else seems to state, there is very little smoke, if at all. Palate is relatively full and carbonation is extremely soft.
3.4 Bottled (from CrackedKettle). Deep ambery golden colour with mediumsized foamy white head. Aroma is quite strong on malts, some slight fruity notes as well as alcohol. Flavour is fruity, a bit roasted malty with some slight caramelly notes as well.
3.3 8/07/2009: Mac Queen’s Nessie Original Red Ale... Aroma: Intense/concentrated malts; It just smells like a strong Austrian beer (for some reason they all seem to have a common thread in the aroma)! Appearance: Yolky blonde (tarnished gold) color; mostly clear with only a few floaters; small off-white head that doesn’t seem to stay around long. Flavor: Plenty malty, but mostly ligher malts; some light caramel, toasted malts and sweet bread crust; a touch of soft sherry and almond; lightly oxidized in the back; slightly dry finish; alcohol is completely absent from the flavor. Palate: Medium-light to medium, very smooth, VERY little carbonation, maybe a bit thinner than preferred. Overall: Not quite as strong as I was hoping for, but good; not worth the ~$4.50 price though! Regardless, I always appreciate a good Austrian beer! 11,2 fl. oz. bottle (alc. 7,3% vol.) from The Party Source in Bellevue, Kentucky. Rating #254 for this beer.
3.3 Dark copper orange with an off white foam. Aroma is caramel mostly, a rye mash note, but only a hint smoke. Taste is malty, sweet, a light spicy rye note, a hint of scotch smoke, iodine. But thin overall.
2.7 Clear aproicot pour from the 11.2 oz bottle, this was one of the MJ’s classic 500 beers of the world and it’s rated low and classifed as a ’smoked’ when the bottle claims it to be an ’Original Red Ale’ Strange beer, a scotch red ale made in Austria..a bit sweet and sticky for my taste..but it’s another one to cross off the the list!
3.1 Bottled, 7.3% version. Poured clear, brighter golden with a short, fizzy cap of white head. The aroma picked up very sweet caramel and candy-like notes with a definite presence from the whiskey malt around.. somewhat smoky.. just too sweet overall. The flavor was also too far skewed to the sweet side with caramel and fruity candy present.. a touch bitter and a touch oaky on the edges with mild smoke to it.. sticky finish. Medium-bodied with ideal carbonation to move it across the palate.. again too sweet, but certainly drinkable.
3.5 Pours light golden amber with a medium sized white head. Aroma is caramel malt. Taste is caramel malt as well, with a slight bitter finish, not really getting much smoke flavor in this one though, just a little in the finish. Not bad though.
2.8 11.2 ounce bottle from Westpark Wine & Beer in Richmond. Pours a clear light amber with a medium head. Nutty and grainy aroma. Very grainy taste with some apple-like fruit and honey notes. Medium body. Weird one.
1.9 Bottle. Light amber colour. Typical lager aroma. Tastes like a lager with a disturbing touch of whiskey extract. Very thin body.
2.6 Clear amber with medium off white head. Sweet malty aroma with notes of caramel. Flavour is sweet with toasted malt, caramel and it finished with a discrete bitterness.Slight notes of cardboard.
Suave. Quase não há amargor. Corpo leve. Notas de malte e caramelo.
3.3 Pours an awkward green tinted amber orange/amber with a minimal beige froth. Extremely grassy nose, hay and dirt. Wow, crazy malt flavor. So grassy, lots of hay, tangy and sour, semi-sweet. Very earthy. The finish is really the highlight, lots of peaty scotch notes. The body is very glassy, minimal carbonation, mimics a scotch. The more I drink the more I want a glass of one of the 6 classics. This would make more sense if it was much higher in ABV. Takes a while to get used to that Highland taste coming from a beer, it’s really quite perplexing and I could completely see how non-scotch drinkers would not get this beer.
3.4 Amber colour with small white head.Aroma is light spicy (pepper)And light fruity has a mild smokeed mouth feels and a sweet candy like finish.
2.8 Pours a clear golden color, with a medium frothy head that leaves some streams of sticky lacing. Aroma is sweet, citrus, and light hop notes. Taste is the same. Umm......I’d say this is a Pilsener or a Lager style of some sort. Smoked? No way!
3.1 Bottled. Nice amber color with a fluffy white foam that is not persistent. Aroma is quite sweet with some hop notes. Flavor is pretty much the same, notes of roasted sugar and toffee. Mouthfeel is dry... Good one.
3.0 Very interesting...although the label says "Original Red Ale", the style on RateBeer says it’s a "Smoked" and it doesn’t look or taste like either!!! 10 karat rose gold with a 1/4 inch off-white head that leaves quickly. Nose is sugary sweet with just a hint of hops. Flavor is liquid candy...(dark fruit, brown sugar, toffee, caramel) X2..a little too sweet for my palate.
