3.3 My Berliner Weisse is about 30-40 years old. The head is unstable. It smells sweet-fruity, a bit citrus-sour. It tastes citrus-sour, refreshing, just a bit musty. Very good! It is so old but the taste is still fresh! Fantastic! -/11/10/11/-/11
3.2 Bottle. Thanks Eric for sharing this vintage bottle. Poured a light and hazy yellow color with a very small sized head. Aromas of wheat and had a funkiness to it. Tastes of tart wheat, lemons, and citrus. Nice tart finish. If only the aromas were as strong and nice as the tastes.
4.3 [1998] Hazy pale golden with a spritzy white head that faded to nothing. Aroma of lemons, hay, lacto, citrus, wood, and light oxidation. Taste of lemon, citrus, floral, green grapes, light apple, and sour finish.
3.5 Bottle. Pale pour with sediment sticking to the side of the bottle. Aroma of citrus, hay and vegstable. A sour tart taste with a sharp bite. Rather good for the style.
Super Bier!! 3.6 12oz bottle (from 1987) shared by Doug, thanks Appearance: Slightly cloudy yellow with a small white head and some light lacing Aroma: Tart green apples and vinegar Taste: Tart citrus, vinegar and apple Wow, this tastes great for a 24 year old beer! Crisp and clean.
3.7 12 ounce bottle from 1987. Pours a mostly clear golden color with a small white head. A superb sour lambic-like nose, some sawdust, vanilla. Tart lactic sourness, earthy, woody, some sweetness akin to a Faro, lemons, some vanilla. Some particulates and a odd caked film on the bottom. Quite nice considering it is 24 years old it’s amazing. A sort of thin body.
3.6 Home (33 cl bottle): A slightly cloudy beer with a light yellow colour and a small white head. The aroma is sour (lactic acid) with wheat, fruityness 9citrus and appel) and some wood/vanille hints. The taste is nice sour (lactic acid) which is in a good balance with the wheat end fruity taste (citrus, appel, grapefruit). Also some wood hints. The aftertaste stay sour, but nice.
3.0 A bit of a shame they retired this. Good with red. green or no syrup. Best without. Serving: Bottle and tap
3.7 Bottled. Hazy pale yellow in color. A rich and bubbly white head. The aroma is sweet and skunky. The flavor is citric and sour. The aftertaste is sour and lasts for quite some time.
3.5 Sample from a 12oz bottle at Woodshop 5.0, rated 2/20/2010. 30 years old! A bit of rust on the inside of the cap. Pours a hazy whitish yellow. Still has a bit of carbonation! Very oxidized, as one would expect. Aroma is a touch sour with some brett. Tastes is a bit sour with some lactose, yeast and old-bale-of-hay.
3.9 Tried from a 30 year old bottle at Woodshop 5.0. Light cloudy yellow color. Nice Brett aroma. Very mellowed. Acidity is present, but at a low level. Very easy to drink. Good.
3.2 1970s bottle shared by MaxxDaddy via that German guy. Well it poured ugly and looked ugly, old, dirty yellow with no life to it. Looked like aged mahogany milk. Its old but its a berliner weisse, so it was drinkable despite the oxidation. Its light, easy to drink with just a faint pinch of lacto at the very end. Not much to say, its an old Berliner Weisse, which is not like an old Barley Wine but nothing like a fresh wheat beer. I know I have mentioned a lot of what it isn’t but that represents how little there is to say.
3.6 Bottle from Secret Santa 09-10 "probably from the 70’s." Nose is surprisingly great. Peach, lemon, tart wheat, bugs and yeast. Color is less bright and pale than the style usually is. Flavor has flattened with age, but the oxidation is mild, though noticeable. Tastes of hollow lemon, paper, and copper. A curiosity to be sure.
3.1 Bottle shared at puzzl’s New Year’s Eve 2009: This bottle was from the 1970s! Thanks Max! Pours a milky brownish golden with no head. Very old aroma- damp cardboard and mild lactic notes. Slick body- the carbonation is gone. Papery flavor as well, but it surprisingly has a crisp lactic presence. Quite drinkable for it’s age- an interesting experience. I bet it was lively and doing very well when fresh.
3.4 1970s bottle shared by MaxxDaddy via that German guy. Awesome. I certainly never expected to have a 30 y/o berliner weisse. Pours a rather dirty, ugly brownish yellow with no head, although still a few bubbles; although I’d wager that even a wine at this age would still have some bubbles. The aroma is pure cabbage/kimchi, a little bit of fermented soy beans... nto exactly what you want in your beer, though the souness is fairly typical in this case. Medium bodied with a fair amount of lacto and thinned out, old sourness typical in non-lambic beers of this age. I can’t say I’m excited by this, but it’s pretty decent for this age. It doesn’t taste like much has happened to it over the years besides that it’s just sayed "OK."
3.9 @ a tasting, thanks DSG for sharing this beer, pours lightly hazy with a small white head, acidic aroma with bret, flowery, olive, apple, vanilla and cheese, nice acidity in flavor, lemon, vinigar, bret, grapes and parfum, medium bodied, real nice.
3.7 At a tasting, many thanks DSG, about 25 to 30 years, no head, murky light orange, aromas of cider, dried apple and vinegar, strong flavour of sour apples, with some metalic notes, light sourish aftertaste., very tart which feels exactly right for this beer. Would be excellent on a summer day, here in the middle east.
3.7 Bottle aged between 25 to 30 years old: a cross between an extra dry cider and a lambic, some funk, some viniger, granny smith apples, dried apples, wood, hay, thanks DSG, it was enjoyable.
3.6 Thanks Jesper. Hazy yellow with a tiny white head. Sour aroma with lacto, wheat and lemons. Sour flavour with lacto, lemons and wheat notes. Finished sour. Nice one.
3.7 33 cL bottle - 20 year old bottle, courtesy of Koelschtrinker. Pours hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is solid dry and sourish. Dry phenolic and slight brettish dry. Mild sour and slight wheaty flat malty flavoured. Bitter and light sourish finish. Surprisingly good!
2.8 Bottle. About 20 years old. Sweet vinous and citric aroma. Almost like a good oud bruin. Cloudy yellow colour. Almost no head. slightly flat, not much carbonation left. The flavour is OK citric, quite lactic, but no more than a fresh one.
3.5 33cl Bottles, Landré and Groter Jan, both 25-30years old, very kindly shared by DSG, thanks Barak! Both beers were very similar imo. Unclear golden amber colour, no head. Aroma is fruity, sweet, light sour funkiness, a hint of bandaid. Flavour is sour, funky, a bit watery, a bit chemical, dry and light fruity sweetness. Sour finish. The Groter Jan was a bit sweeter, more sour and more funky in both aroma and taste, slightly oxidized. Both beers were light bodied and very refreshing, after all those years. I don’t like really sour beers, but this was just the amount of sourness I like in a beer. Very nice.
3.6 Bottle sample at Noogfest High 5. Several decades old. Poured a very cloudy light brown with no head. Nice sour fruit aroma. The flavor found the same sour fruits with hints of wheat. Light body and tart. As nice as it is now I can only imagine how awesome it must have been when fresh.
3.5 Cloudy pour light brown pour. A light sour fruit aroma. Light tart lemon like flavor but pretty clean. Light bodied and very refreshing beer. Can only imagine how good it was in its day.
3.8 1974 bottle, uber thanks to Derdopplebock. the first pour is totally clear and looks like white wine. The subsequent pours are cloudier and cloudier until it becomes totally muddy at the end. Aroma is vineous woody and resinous. Like an old lambic. Nice, mellow, and surprisingly NOT oxidized in the aroma. Has fruitiness. Totally flat slick palate is watery but rich. The beer is exceptionally smooth. Similar in character to an unblended lambic. Tartness has vanished and turned into a mature dryness. Very wine-like. Mellow, woody, with a sweet lactic kiss. Has aged very well and is surprisingly pleasant. Grotter Jan7-4-8-4-15. Also 1974 bottle from Derdopplebock. Hazy yellow with tiny bit of carbonation. Aroma is funkier than the Schultheiss although still not openly funky. Wood is here. Band aid is the only thing that is detracting. This one has a little spritz, which is nice and is yeastier than the Schultheiss. The effervescence is welcome. Has some pleasant tang, a lactic, yummy sweet-sour tang. I liked both of these a lot, and they varied so much! Neither was bad. Both had character. The first is flatter, woodier, vineous. The second is sprizier, tarter, with pineapple yogurt.
4.0 Sampled at the Noogfest High 5. 30 - 40 years old. Definitely the oldest beers I have ever had. Both bottles poured a semi-hazy, semi-milky, yellow with minimal white head. In a word: lemonade. But an amazingly good lemonade. I can’t believe how well this beer stood up after all these years! The caps were completed rusted over!
3.6 Noogfest High 5. Sample from a bottles shared by me thanks to Koelschtrinker. Several decades old. Schultheiss Berliner Weisse Landre. Light cloudy yellow with a thin white fizz. Aroma tart, musty, lemon aroma. Taste is similar lemon, dusty tartness, just a faint oxidation. Awesome. Rating shown. Schultheiss GroterJan Berliner Weisse Schankbier. Pale yellow, this white head. Aroma is lemons, tart, incredible. Taste is lemon tartness, a soft yeastiness and faint oxidation. Rating: 7:3:7:3:15
3.6 Berliner Weisse Landre@Noogfest High5 Thanks lithy-11.2oz bottle-20-30 year old Berliner Weisse from an extremely generous koelschtrinker –pours a disappearing white head and cloudy straw color. Aroma is tart fruit. Taste is tart fruit, sweet light malt, some yeast. Minimum/soft carbonation.
4.2 Bottle shared by oldstylecubsfan. Something like 30 years old!!! Damn, this was fine. Nice and tart, slightly wheat, good acidity. Yum. Wish I had a case of this.
