Scotch Irish Black Irish Plain Porter

Scotch Irish Black Irish Plain Porter

This seasonal porter is a brown so deep that it’s almost black. The taste of our "plain" evolves as it warms in the glass; shading from dry chocolate and coffee to chocolate and cobnut. The finish is dry and nutty with just the slightest hint of licorice. Black Irish is brewed from pale ale, crystal, brown and chocolate malts; with roast barley in the mash for the dry astringency characteristic of Irish porters and stouts. Delightful on its own, it makes a wonderful match with smoked salmon, mussels or oysters.

3.2 Stubby: Black with tan head. Aromatic with toasty hints of malt and chocolate. Taste has some espresso and fruits. A little watery. I expected more to be honest, but it does just fine as a porter.
3.6 341 mL Bottle, Apr. 4, 2010. Deep brown-black body with a small tan head. Aroma of toasted malts, notes of black coffee and molasses, subtle hints of prunes and raisins. Rich flavor of toasted malts, almost Guinness-like; black coffee, toasted malts and a hint of toffee in the aftertaste followed by a hoppy finish.
3.3 (341ml bottle) Pours a dark brown body with a small beige head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, anise, and chocolate. Flavor of roasted malt, earth, chocolate, and coffee with a dry, somewhat bitter finish.
3.3 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The look is brown to black in color with a tan head. The smell is malts, roasty, coffee, and chocolate. The taste is malts, roasty, chocolate, sort of watery, and coffee.
3.6 341 ml stubby bottle. Pours almost black in colour, small tan head. Aroma and taste are similar, mild chocolate and coffee, not overpowering. very drinkable, a good porter!
3.2 Bottle thanks Boutip. Dark pour with no head, this beer has nice aroma of burnt toast, some chocolate and coffee notes. Taste is quite bitter, lots of burnt toast and coffee and a little something fruity, cherry-like. Palate is quite watery which is kind of a downer because this beer was doing good so far.
2.9 (bottle) very dark brown colour with small brown head; aroma of coffee, roasted malts start in the background and become more pronounced with time; simple but balanced flavour
3.3 11.5 oz bottle from LCBO. Pours black with thin rocky tan head. Head fades quickly, leaving slight lace. Aroma is chocolate and coffee, with a hint of licorice and herbal hops. Flavour begins slightly sweet, becomes a bit drier towards the finish. Finish is moderate in length. Light in body with a milky texture and minimal carbonation. A very drinkable porter, but could be more complex. 2010-02-27
3.4 cloudy chocolate brown with a cream head. coffee, chocolate, and oats. smooth and light on the palate, easy flavors of coffee and chocolate.
2.4 Pours coal, looks a bit thick. No head, but looks somewhat carbonated. ------- Aromas of chocolate, nuts, overcooked toasts and some smoke. ------- Taste too thin, too watery. Light-to-medium body, but more light than anything else. ------- Flavour is slightly metallic. Strong notes of oat, nuts and something that doesn’t feel right that was finally licorice. ------- It started great, but ended in castrophic fashion. I’d avoid this one.
2.6 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours a dark brown. Aroma has nice notes of dark roast, very nutty, chocolate and espresso. Flavor is very different then aroma, has a bit of tang and some light dark roast. Mouth feel is watery, light to medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, very disappointed.
3.6 (341ml bottle thanks to bu11zeye) Pours cloudy medium brown with no head. Nose of coffee, roasted grains, and oats. Taste of light bitter coffee, dark chocolate, with a creamy/oat finish.
3.3 Bottle thanks to bullzeye. Hazy dark brown colored pour. Nose is caramel drizzled fudge brownie. Taste is bitter chocolate and some brown sugar. Thinner mouthfeel.
2.9 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Dark brown cloudy pour. Aroma is coffee, earth, smoke and unsweet chocolate. Flavor is metal, coffee, earth and copper. Watery mouthfeel.
3.4 bottle, thanks to bu11zeye, muddy brown color with a really nice chocolate and coffee aroma, flavors of chocolate, grain, light roast, dry cocoa
3.3 Bottle courtesy of bu11zeye. Dark red pour with very tiny bubbles. Roasted brown aroma. Heavy malts and a slight bit of smoke. Taste is slick, with heavy dark roasted malt flavor. A small bit of coffee smoke but not much.
3.1 Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is pretty nice, with roasted malts and coffee. The flavor does not live up to the aroma. The main flavors are roasted malts and coffee. The beer finishes very dry. Light medium, watery mouthfeel.
3.2 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a tan head and a deep brown body. Aroma is nice with chocolate, earth, and pumpernickel. Taste is chocolate, dryness, grain, rye, earthy. Fizzy and dry mouthfeel.
3.0 In bottle from LCBO @ Manulife Centre. I get maltiness and coffee in the nose but I REALLY need breathe in hard to get a discernible amount - enjoyable while it lasts. It pours and looks like flat cola. Beautifully dark and you can see that it’s hazy and unfiltered (as the bottle claims). Head: none (maybe a touch, but I blinked). Lacing: none. Almost flat. Strong roasted malt flavour. There is nothing overly remarkable about this beer but it goes down the hatch quite easily. Would purchase again in future.
1.5 This is shit. Really bad cold stale coffee with cigarette butts in it, something that smells like a repair garage. Bizarre spiced meat. The taste is as terrible with a dust blankness and terrible wet smokes. Dry and sandy feel. Yuck-o.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a deep brown, with no head, boring looking. Rich coffee, chocolate, malt aroma. Some sweetness in the taste, with roasted nut and coffee. Mild finish. Some flaws, but ultimately a good beer.
2.8 Bottle. Pours a dark black with a medium to large dark beige mocha head. Roast, light astringency, touch of chocolate. Plastic and Styrofoam, weird. Roast and old prunes. Finishes up with some more roast. Not so great.
2.7 Black pour with an almond head. Aroma of malt, chocolate and coffee. Taste is again malt and coffee with a little chocolate. Pretty good porter. Not my favourite.
3.0 A fairly flat beer with strong chocolate malty taste. As it gets warmer a burnt flavour takes over, and complexity is harder to appreciate. This isn’t as bitter nor as varied as most porters I’ve had in flavour, but it is unique in its own way. By the time I finished the glass I was glad to be done with this beer. I may revisit in the future - as I usually love porters and most people seemed to like this one.
3.4 33 cl bottle, Mulmur, ON, Canada. Deep black colour, sparse bubbley head. Strong roasted chocolate aroma with coffee and some sweet doughiness. Velvety texture, medium bodied with a smooth creamy bitter finish.
3.1 341 ml bottle courtesy of a trade with Boutip. I have to first say that I really like the retro stubby bottle. It reminds me of the short stubby bottles we had in the 70’s. The beer itself pours black with a moderate-large tan head that lasted until mid-glass and left ample lace. Very pleasant aroma of bittersweet chocolate and malt with a few roasty notes detected as well. The flavor is roasted malt, ash and cardboard leading to a dry ashy finish. Very mild bitterness at the finish. A bit disappointing given the promising start with this beer.
3.5 On cask at Volo. Pours a deep brown/black with small tan head. Roasty nose with coffee and a hint of vanilla. Taste is nicely roasty, mostly coffee. Body is not too heavy. A very drinkable beer.
3.7 A pretty darn good beer. A friend brought this home from Waterloo for me. Pour is deep brown black with a thin disappearing head. Aroam is nutty, coffee and malts. Taste is malty with hints of chocolate and coffee, but not too much. Almost flat. A very likable beer.
3.5 pours deep brown with a small white head that disappears quickly. Lots of dark flavours with dark chocolate, faint coffee, and roasted malt. Mostly roasted malt with a little aftertaste of hops. No carbonation.
3.7 The best smelling porter I’ve smelled in a long time. Chocolate aroma. Subdued coffee flavours. Really nice, medium body that’s perfectly suited to the flavour and style. This brewery has a problem with metallic aftertastes though, really annoying since they’ve got some pretty good brews. A beer I would pick up any day of the week and dddrink with dinner or just socially. Would session on tap like crazy at 4.5%, but alas, have not found on tap.
