Scotch Irish Sgt. Majors IPA

Scotch Irish Sgt. Majors IPA

Sgt. Major’s I.P.A is a robust, "west-coast" style I.P.A. with a tasty white-grapefruit/spice/resin flavour and aroma, making the ale wonderfully refreshing. Its bitterness (68 I.B.U.) is obtained throught the use of copious amounts of Chinook hops. The malts are pale, crystal 60,and chocolate. Available on draught year ’round and soon in 6 packs (bottles) at the LCBO.

3.1 Pours light amber thin white head. It has a light hoppy aroma Very Pacific North West. Malty, Vegital, bitter and dry. Boaring! But not bad.
3.4 On draft at Cafe Volo (Toronto, ON). Pours a generally clear amber brown with thin white head. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of light citrus, wheat, pine, caramel, and some light spice. Flavor is sweet and floral with notes of floral hops, caramel, pine, light funk. Generally medium body with a pleasing hoppy finish.
2.5 5/31/09...Murkey brown to copper with a quick show of a head...nice malt filled aroma...hops are here and there...a little earthy and a little thin in the body as well as a little unbalanced....dark fruits mixed with hops in different doses...not terrible, not amazing.....received in a trade with matt7215
3.0 Stubby thanks to matt7125. Pours an orange/yellow colour with an one finger sized head that laces nicely. Aroma is slightly vegital and sour. Very earthy-muddy hops. Tastes like soap and earthy root vegetables. Weird, slightly off putting... But still drinkable. May have left this one too long in the fridge. Thanks Matt!
3.3 Taste is very hoppy and a bit spicy. It’s definitely a good hop kick but I’d like a little more malt or otherwise. A good brew but not as exceptional as I had anticipated.
3.5 341ml bottle thanks to cfrancis. Pours clear pale amber with a huge white fluffy head. Nose is hoppy (pine) and caramel. Head retention is long, Extensive lacing. I have to wait for it to go down a bit before drinking. Taste is hoppy, salty and really spicy. Some alcohol feeling also. some hints of fruits. Finish is very dry and hoppy bitter. Nice IPA, nothing to write home about. Carbonation is very lively.
3.8 Bottle. A gift from hobbersr, in part as thanks for driving 3 and a half hours each way to Whitefish, MT to check out a beer store that MIGHT have some bottles of Cantillon... because I totally wasn’t gona go anyway.... Pours a lovely deep polished copper with a think off-white and very sticky head. Nice greean cast to the beer, exactly as I like in an IPA. Slightly hazy and with great lacing. Nose is nice and spicy, with plenty of citrus and hops, plus a nice crystal-malt toffeeishness right in the middle. Palate is crisp and refreshing, with nice malt and hop character, great balance, very well hiddden alcohol. Bitternessis present, but well balanced against both the sppice and the malt. I doubt I’d have gotten this bottle if hobbersr had tasted his bottle first!
4.0 Very hoppy smell with spice and citrus. Taste is hops and malt with a bitter aftertaste. Nice full palate. Great for a local beer. Re-rate: Had a bottle literally "off the line" opened mere hours after bottling. Such a different beer. Hop aroma is exploding out of the glass. Smoother palate and less bitterness than one that had been sitting. Might have to start calling the brewery in order to find out the bottling days.
4.0 Stubby courtesy of Matt7215. Pours copper with an off white rocky head. Smells of perfume, light citrus, earthy. Tastes of citrus, perfume, wildflowers, a touch of resin, sage. Unusual hop profile, but very refined and enjoyable.
3.9 On tap from Volo. Poured like a fresh squeezed orange. Lots of wonderful hoppy and citrus aromas. I high quality IPA.
3.4 Bottle, sampled at Woodshop Quad. Pours a cloudy amber with a white ring. Big sweet aroma, of malt, hops, caramel, and dark fruits. Nice bitter-sweet taste, with a bit of hops, caramel, malt, herbs, and a bit of a bite. Lingering clean sharp bitterness. Still drinkable.
3.5 Bottle at the woodshop quad, at least 2 years old, probably older, age did this beer well. Pours reddish with a tan ring. Nose is sweet and boozy. Taste is sweet mellow and really pretty damn good, no hops left but who cares.
3.6 thanks to whomever brought this t woodshop quad sweet up front with a dry finish, nice beer
3.6 Bottle. Deep jewel tone red-ruby. Incredibly red. Nose is balanced, hoppy but also with meaty caramel malts. Autumnal aromas: crisp, bitter air. Good, quaff-friendly palate. Like an ESB balance of flavors. Roasty, burnt goodness. Very nice.
3.2 A fellow LCBO customer saw me buying Mill Street Tankhouse Ale and recommended next time I try this one. I took his advice and was quite pleased. Aroma is quite hoppy with some malty and fruity notes. A hint of caramel also. Flavour about the same with some bitterness. Good job Canada, you’re starting to come around.
3.3 341mL bottle. Pours a clear amber with quickly diminishing head. Aroma is great - hoppy and sweet. Flavour has a big bitterness, yielding to a spicier finish. Aftertaste is a tad metallic - not too bothersome though. Enjoyable - enjoy my IPA a bit less bitter but this is still nice.
4.0 Stubby: Copper with a small airy head. Big leafy hop aroma with ctrus and malt. Great hop and malt taste backed up by grapefruit and spice. Chewy with a distinct earthyness. Bitter throughout. Tremendous IPA.
3.5 Midly hazy copper-bronze body with a medium beige head. The aroma is hops (pine, sap, earth, resin) without being overwhelmingly bitter - in fact it’s fairly mild as far as IPA’s go. The taste has plenty of fruit notes, grassy/pine hops, biscuit-like malt, and a hint of salty/bitter yeast. I like beers that shows off a hint of yeast without detracting from the flavors. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, good hop aroma and flavor without the bite.
(Rating #1810)
2.7 341 mL bottle from matt7215. Thanks! Orange-brown with almost no head. Malty aroma with floral hop notes. Strong hop taste... metallic, resin, and some grain also. Drinkable but forgettable.
3.6 Nicely balanced between resiny, piney hops and some biscuity malt. Caramel flavours became more apparent as the beer warmed, and it finished dry with crisp carbonation that wiped the palate clean.
3.5 341 ml stubbie from the LCBO. pours dark orange with a small off white head. aromas are hops and caramel malts. flavours are similar but a bit thin. improved as it warmed. an average IPA by my books.
3.5 In the stubby bottle at Smokeless Joe’s in Toronto. Has a real orange and chocolate nose. Pours dark amber with a thin, big-bubbled white head. This has a great benchmark IPA flavor- a strong and long on the tongue bitter bite. The bitternesss lasts long after the last swallow. Really good.
3.6 341ml bottle 5.5% ABV I tried this beer on May 26, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe’s" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a translucent reddish-brown colour with a thin white head, that was bubbly. The aroma was malty with some caramel and spicy hints, with a slight hoppy hint. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonationn, and a dry bitter finish. The flavour was full of citrusy and grapefruity hoppiness, with a little malty tinge. A very good beer, although I would have liked more of a hoppy aroma.
3.8 I like west coast ipas thus enjoyed this one. pours amber colour with minimal head. Taste of citrus and hops. slight bitter aftertaste. Prefer this to durham hop addict in the canadian ipa category.
3.1 Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Orange color. Melon and pineapple in the aroma. Firm grassy, citric hopbitter flavor with sweet Cantaloup melon. Firm grassy hopbitter aftertaste. Balance is lacking just a bit, but flavors and aromas are nice.
3.5 On tap at Castle on King. Amber-orange (in dim lighting) with a modest white head. Sweet aroma of flowers, cherry, almonds - noticeably nutty. Flavour has pine and grapefruit. The malts are definitely shoved out of the way. Earth is present. Feels ’heavier’ in taste than most other IPA’s I’ve had. Medium to heavy body with a creamy texture. Leaves a dry mouth and lingering hops. Tasty, but I’d hoped for more complexity.
3.5 Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Nice orange colour. Big head. Hoppy nose. Strong hoppy flavour. Some malt, caramel, chocolates. Also quite bitter. Nice prickly finish.
3.1 Pours a clear amber with an obscene amount of dense, frothy, off-white, root beer float-like head. A third of the bottle yields a full glass of foam on a gentle pour. You had better have a book on-hand or something else to do while you wait for this one to settle. On the nose are: fruity hops, bubblegum and caramel malt. Light to medium-bodied and slick (almost flat) with a dry, bitter finish. The flavor is of fruity, floral hops and bubblegum, finishing abruptly bitter. This tastes like a blend of a German hefe and a British IPA.; interesting but a bit odd. It certainly delivers on hop bitterness but almost at the exclusion of any balance, whatsoever. It’s unique, but it’s not really my bag.
3.5 At the LCBO. Had it about 6 months ago and was not impressed but this one went down much better. Nice hoppy aroma, clear reddish orange with a foamy white quickly disappearing head. Hoppy dry with just the right bitterness. Very similar to the US IPAs except light on flavour.
