3.5 [7100-20150304] 12floz bottle. Mild grainy roast aroma. Murky, dark brown body with a quick foamy off-white head. Grainy slightly soured malt and roasted woody fruit flavour. Medium body. Average. (7/3/8/3/14) 3.5 (c/o solidfunk, w/ him, jercraigs, Travlr)
3.9 22 Oz bottle poured. Pours a really dark reddish brown color with a big foam head and lace. Woody aroma with some roasted malt and dark fruit. Brown sugar and cinnamon flavor, and some nice toasted flavor finish. I enjoyed this one. Grows on me. Ton of flavor. Great beer.
3.1 Bottle. Murky brown with almost no head. Smells of sweet fruit and candy. Taste is copper, grass, and cherry.
3.1 2015-03-04. Murky brown body with a small white head. 3+ Aroma of muddled toasty roasty malt. Flavour is similar, sweetish malt core with some sweet sugary notes, light toasty malt. Some wheat touches if you look for it. Average body bodied palate, soft carbonation. Bottle shared by solidfunk.
3.5 Easy drinking and good enough for the style from what I know from my weak experience drinking dunkelweizens. Dark amber pour with OK head and lacing. Bottle from total wine.
3.6 Bottle courtesy of solidfunk, thanks! Cloudy amber brown color, bright tan head. Aroma of roasty caramel. Taste is sweetish. Caramel. Interesting.
2.5 Off balanced with a lot of hops and a watery taste. I'm starting to wonder if a beer doesn't have a certain amount of hops on the West Coast, it's not beer. Getting grapefruit, honey, this is a train wreck.
3.0 Really good flavor but far too watery. Cough drop, vanilla, woody, alcohol, floral, citrus
3.9 My first beer rating in a while. On tap at Hops Northwest in New Westminster. Served in a large snifter, which is a nice touch. A very dark, not quite black beer with moderate carbonation. A chocolate note on the nose. Chocolate predominates on the tastebuds, with a faint fruity note. Sweet and rich. Body is medium, finish is sweet and lingering. I find many dunkels a bit weak, and this is the perfect remedy. 3.9.
2.3 12 oz bottle. Reddish brown with a thin tan head and spotty lace. Aroma is light cocoa, some dark fruit, toast. Flavor is slightly sour wheat, nutty, spice.
3.5 Draft - Toast and some cocoa notes. Dark brown with a decent light brown head. Toast and light cocoa with a touch of peppery spice. Interesting and good.
3.3 On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours a deep dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is pretty laid back, with notes of toasted nuts and dry cocoa. Flavour is certainly sweeter than the nose suggests, with notes of sweetened chocolate, light dusty toasted nuts, banana and some caramel. Nothing like an authentic dunkelweizen, but still well-made and enjoyable.
3.0 12 oz bottle. Pours a thick brown color. Very little head, no lacing. Aroma is heavy roasty malt, with some caramel. Flavor roasty malt up front with a hint of caramel and coffee. Palate is rather chewy. Overall a decent winter ale.
2.6 smells like your typical english strong/winter warmer type beer. dark fruits, and roasted malt. flavor goes south...alarmingly astringent, bordering on sour, and not the good kind of sour. I can’t get over the palate and flavor on this one. RB raters have commented on it regularly but don’t seem to mind as much as i do, but i didn’t dig it."
3.7 Bomber. Clear deep dark copper brown, persistent creamier tan foam settles. Aroma of dark roast wit malt and caramel. Taste is darker roasted wit malt, sweet caramel and milky chocolate, some dark fruitiness and light earthy hop. Softer carbonation, smooth medium body. Nice. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)
3.1 Murky darker amber color, small head, some lace/retention. Aroma is big caramel, some wheat, banana. Medium bodied, quite drinkable.
3.2 From a bottle. Pours caramel brown with a creamy tan head. Tastes like roasted grains, malty, burnt coffee. Light body and low carbonation. Smells malty, nutty, and like dried fruit.
3.3 Bottle. Pours cola brown with creamy tan head. Aroma is cookie and bready malts, toffee, light roast, fig, dates, and some nuttiness. Flavor is dry malts, light roast, light earthy bitterness, and some dark fruit esters; dry finish with some roast. Medium body and carbonation.
2.8 11/2/2011. 22 oz. bottle. Dark brown with a tan head. Roasted malt aromas with spices, yeast and hints of chocolate. The malt and spice combination is what gets me every time drinking a weissbier - and I’m just not motivated for that style.
3.4 Deep dark brown color when poured. Malt flavors and a little bitter coffee aftertaste.
3.5 Pours a thin head on a dark, dark brown colored body. The aroma is a rich malt, caramel and a little lemon zest. The taste is malty sweet forward, molasses in the middle and finishes with a mild bitter note. The texture is a little sticky with low to moderate carbonation. An enjoyable sipper.
4.0 Poured from bomber to glass. Great, dark color with a slight ruby hue. Thick, tan head and left lots of lace to decorate the glass. I didn’t pick up crisp citrus aroma as listed by the brewer. It was a tad sweet with coffee/bitter aftertaste. Medium viscosity, above average essence of alcohol. I pulled it out of a fridge at 37deg but as it warmed to room temp the flavor and mouthfeel was enhanced. It was a real enjoyable beer. I’ll be drinking again, for sure. A bit of discrepancy on style (per BA), listed as Weisenbock. Brewer’s site states Dunkelweiss.
2.9 Tap at Popeye, Tokyo. Black colour with a small off-white head. Chocolate, caramel aroma. Bland chocolate flavour with some dried fruits.
3.6 Pours a dark, barely translucent sepia with a fairly thick light tan head. Robust aroma has a malty, slightly smoky core and firm notes of cloves and caramel. Malty flavor delights with caramel, cloves and subtle woody hop notes plus more than a hint of fruit - apple, plus a little cherry. Smooth texture has only a little fizz and is fair in firmness. Scuttlebutt has it that this will keep you warm - but seriously.
3.5 Draught at the brewpub Hazy dark amber to brown color with small head. Mild aroma, sweetish, some caramel. Round mouthfeel; quite nice caramel flavor, the wheat is not evident, but a light roasted malt touch is very pleasant here; it has a dusty character typical of Danish beers; quite strong bitterness; fruity esters are almost absent; this is not your typical Dunkelweizen (Imperial), yet it’s a quite good beer.
2.9 Bottle - Pours dark amber with a thin foamy light tan head. Nose is pretty nutty, with some baking spice, dark rye bread, and hint of banana. Taste is mostly the same, with bit of heat on the finish and lots of nuttiness on the finish. Thin bodied and smooth, with ample carbonation. Baffled as to why this is a 91 for style.
3.1 Bomber. Nose has a little more chocolate/caramel than I was expecting, sweet with very mild phenols and minerals, pours a murky dark mahogany with a light tan head. Taste low-medium bitterness, medium sweet, good balance under mineral water and bubblegum/clove, with strong herbal presence on the back end. Medium body nicely textured, smooth and malty (reminds of Munich, at least). Some slight burned notes/smoke, but this falls more into a generic Brown Ale type for me (though it isn’t dull).
3.7 Draught at Kamikaze. Dark brown, almost black, thin lacy head. Nose of chocolate, coffee, tobacco, light phenols, a touch of cabbage. Flavor is chocolate fudge, earth, light coffee, some berries. Nice fine carbonation. Well balanced, not very German, but very chocolately and tasty and good bitterness.
2.8 12-ounce twit-off bottle in Seattle. Pours a dense and hazy dark brown with only a slight head. Medium body with chewy mouthfeel. Malty flavor with dry character. Complex malty finish. OK.
4.0 Bottle. Great tast. Pour brown, and full. Little head, but good. Aroma is nutty. Taste is solid with notes of brown sugar, nuts, and a little smoke. Good taste.
