Scuttlebutt Hoptopia Ale

Scuttlebutt Hoptopia Ale

This "imperial IPA" has a very strong hop aroma and flavor, however it isn’t as bitter as the Gale Force IPA. There is a strong malt backbone to offer a level of balance but with over two and a half pounds of hops per barrel it resonates hops from start to finish. With so much flavor happening you miss the 8.6% alcohol by volume so be careful when serving or drinking.

Hops were added at every stage of the process...it was dry-hopped with chinooks for two weeks. 75 IBU’s.

Hops: chinook, centennial, columbus, cascade, bullion.

3.8 Pours darker, slight amber in the colour I guess. Aroma displays some earth and herbal hops. This is not your sweet tropical IPA but more like earthy and harsh. Balance is still well developed, so when drinking it, you get a bit of biscuits, malt dust and yes, still some hop fruitiness. Drinks surprisingly easy, definitely feels lower abc than it actually has. Great double IPA, totally satisfying.
3.4 Bottle. Amber beer with a cream head. Light malt and light grapefruit aroma with light caramel. Grapefruit and pine flavor with light caramel. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Grapefruit and caramel lingers with light pine.
3.8 wow - quite a lot in there. Grapefruit quite clear on the nose. And then in the taste too against a sweet caramel malt - citrus, some pine and herbal notes. ABV well hidden alright. Dangerous, this one.
3.7 Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi). Thick caramel nose, with big citrus (grapefruit) and pine. Hazy, near cloudy, gold leafy. Caramel, resiny hop (with a bit of burn), some spiciness, and long bitter tracks. Medium-heavy body, with rich and rough hop texture. Hides the alc. very well. Hop-heavy mixed up blend, but tasty and malty as well.
3.5 355ml bottle from Favourite Beers, Cheltenham. Hazy orange colour with a small stable white head. Aroma is strong hops, grapefruit, touch of malt, also some herbal notes. Flavour is very hoppy, bitter, fruit, pine, malt notes. The aftertaste is quite bitter and floral/herbal. Alcohol is well hidden.
3.8 Bottle from Euston Tap. Hazy dark golden with a lasting white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and moderate hoppy - grapefruit and pine. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 250316
3.6 Draft pour pint athe Scuttlebutt. Pours an orange copper color with a lasting fizz head. Grain forward aroma. I actually enjoy this much more after it sat and wares up a bit. Good flavors, really came out this way. Some orange, and a balanced grains and hop finish. Pretty good.
3.7 Bottle: Served in a Chouffe glass: Hazy orange body with a small vast and thick creamy head. Aromas of hops, malts, creamy, cookies, yellow fruit... Flavour is chalky with hops and bitters, some malts, some hop fruits, biscuit, bit of alcohol. Not really a DIPA, but still ok. Aftertaste is hoppy and bitter, or bitter hoppy. Herbal and malty... Low carbo, creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied.

3.6 Bottle from Bottledog kings cross. Hazy amber lasting white head. sweet hoppy aroma. Fresh enough. Hops are big leafy and fresh hops. Big hops. Some sweetness. Better the more it opens up. Decent.
3.2 Small bottle bought at Bottle Jockey. Pours a hazy amber. Aroma AND taste are messy, sweet fruits. Bitter aftertaste. It would have been nice, if it was not so dirty.
3.4 0,355l bottle at home. some number that says 815 which I would assume means bottling. smells of caramel, pines, bit sweetish, light grass and herbs, flowery, light nuts. good smell bit on the sweet side. full body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes sweet at first, then rather bitter, citric notes, herbs, light pines, candy notes, some stale hops. finishes rather light with notes with medium bitterness and citric notes, herbs and light pines. okish, taste not too great, maybe also an issue of freshness, bit watery / stale taste.
3.7 Bottle from deeside drinks emporium. Pours a clear yellow/orange with an off white head that fades slowly. Aromas of honeydew melon, citrus fruits and coriander leaf. Flavour is a nice hop bomb with similar flavours to the aroma. Pine linger.
3.3 355 ml bottle @ Timo A. Pours clear golden color with a small head. Cardboard and vegetables on the aroma, herbal, jelly beans, sweet fruits and pine, hops and orange. Sweet flavor with orange and pineapple, some mild gooseberry notes, alcohol is quite well hidden, caramel malts and some resin. The aroma feels a bit off at first, gets better towards the end. Something is a bit off here though. 4424
3.6 Aroma is passion fruit, grapefruit, citrus, lemon grass and pinecone. Taste is sweet malts which are full bodied and met with complex hops, malts, and fruit notes that match the aroma. Appearance is a hazy amber with a thin pearl head that retains quite well
3.5 Clear orange color with off-white head. Aroma is hoppy with earthy and sweet orange notes. There is also some sweet malt and stale grains note. Taste starts somehow sweet and fruity but gets quickly bitter and dusty. Bitterness is quite harsh with lots of grapefruit pith. Body is medium-light with medium carbonation. Overall it’s a very classic, old school type DIPA. It has the harsh bitterness and earthy hops you expect from a classic example of the style.
3.8 25th January 2015 Light haze on this gold beer, tidy white head. Palate is smooth and has decent fine carbonation. Decent malt base, a light creamy sweetness. Hops start with a spicy resin followed by marmalade and grapefruit. Bitterish citric peel before a spicy finish and linger. Nicely done, very drinkable.
3.7 355ml bottle. Cloudy, pale amber colour with average, thick, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Piney and slightly citrusy hoppy aroma, fruity notes of pineapple, hints of lemon zest. Taste is citrusy hoppy, notes of lemon, lemon zest, lemon drops, hints of lemon tea, minimally sugary, caramel malty basis. Fresh, citrusy, straightforward DIPA.
3.2 Bottle. Dark golden, hazy, average and mostly lasting head. Moderate to full, malty and sweetish aroma, some caramel and light tropical fruitiness, some grapefruit - light piney hoppyneness, light alcohol.Body is medium, malty and lightly sweetish flavor, light caramel and tropical fruitiness, some grapefruit - light piney hoppyness, faint alcohol. Finish is average, malty and dryish, light caramel and faint tropical fruitiness, some grapefruit/piney hoppyness, light alcohol. OK hoppy and fruity aroma, but flavor/finish lacks fruitiness. Finish is bit harsh.
3.5 Bottle shared at Leighton’s, as ’Scuttlebutt Hoptopia’. Hazy orange, opaque, lightly sparkling, decent foamy off-white head, full lacing. Aroma is dried flowers, mint, orange, a little soap. Body is medium, smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is pine-forward, some toffee, floral and resinous with a dry finish. Not worthy of the import premium but it’s a decent enough DIPA overall.
3.3 Bottle by thanks to Dan. It pours hazed orange - amber with a thick yellow - white head. The nose is bitter - sweet, stewed orange, peach, trimmed fruit cocktail and muffin. The taste is crisp, bitter orange, grassy, waxy citrus peel florals and peppery spice with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy carbonation. A bit soapy, but not bad overall.
3.5 Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Daniel. Pours clear gold with a thick, frothy off-white head. Crackery pale malts in the nose, ripening citrus fruits, lemon rind, pale grains. Medium sweet flavor with a bit of alcohol kick, orange rind, pale bread, minerals, oily pine. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming and resinous on the finish, more pale bread, pine, ripe citrus. Good stuff.
3.3 Bottle split at the Bespin cloud system, thanks to Danny, 21/01/16. Lightly hazed orange golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is bitter orange, straw, citric pith, toasted malt, caramel drool. Taste comprises orange pith, melon, grapefruit, straw, light bread, mineral trace. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with earthy hop bitterness. Ok DIPA but far from top draw.
3.6 355ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours hazy gold with a thick white head. Aromas of caramel and orange. Taste is sweet, orange. Bitter finish.
3.7 Bottle from Deeside Drinks Emporium. Hazy golden body with a medium white head. Steady carbonation. Great lacing. Aroma of orange and honey. Flavour of grapefruit, maple syrup and sweet melon. Medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Very soft fizz. Sweet and tasty.
3.2 Mixed on this--MB loved it, I wasn’t so sure. Lots of grass and straw flavors to it--a bit much to me so that it becomes a little harsh. Slightly astringent finish.
3.6 Bottle from stirchley wines. Amber beer with small head. Aroma of sweet caramel, hops and fruit. Taste is fruity, some stewed fruits and caramel with hop bitterness. Good.
3.7 Bottle from Stirchley Wines via Sarkynorthener cheers Martin; clear amber pour with a thin white head, aroma has sweet caramel and some tangerine, taste has sweet caramel, sticky mouthfeel, ok.
3.8 Bottle, pours hazy gold / amber. Small white head. Aroma is piney, light medium caramel malt, passion fruit, lime marmalade. Medium sweet, balanced, finish is drying and medium bitter, carbonation is soft.
3.4 More carmel and hop bite than much else. Not an amazing IPA in any way. Not a bad beer, but not an incredible DIPA. Aroma is almost more hops and sweetness than anything else. Thin fading head. Purchased in Wisconsin.
