Shepherd Neame Bishops Finger (Bottle and can)

Bottle and can: Filtered.
Kentish Strong Ale

Bishops Finger takes its name from the finger-shaped signposts which pointed pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury and was the first strong ale to be brewed by Shepherd Neame after malt rationing was eased in the late 1950s. It is one of the UK’s oldest bottled beers, brewed since 1958.

Bishops Finger holds EU Protected Geographical Indication, recognising its unique provenance. Uniquely, it is brewed to a charter which states it can only be brewed by the head brewer on a Friday and that it must be brewed using 100% natural ingredients, Kentish hops and barley, and the brewery’s own artesian mineral water.

4.0 Bottle from my local off-licence ‘Wine Rack’. Pours a clear chestnut colour with a medium sized creamy white head. Aromas of dark fruits, toasty bread, a touch of caramel and spice. Taste has more dark fruits, caramel, burnt brown bread, spice, some added roasty notes and a hint of nuts. A nice earthy hop bitterness on the finish. Medium to full body with a smooth oily mouthfeel. Good beer.
3.2 Found out of bottle from a store in Jaworze, Poland. Pours a clear dark caramel with retaining off white foam. Strong aroma. Better on the colder side. Decent fall option.
3.0 Clear copper/orange-brown with a moderate beige head. Aroma: Malt: Caramel, honey. Also some herbal hops. Mouth: Dry hoppiness but also with a touch of sweetness. Watery. Medium body, low/medium carbonation
4.2 Good body, hoppy and malty.... Serve chilled, top ale!
3.5 Brązowa barwa, klarowne, niska piana, Wytrawne, zboże, chleb, brak wyrazistej goryczki. Dobre, bardzo pijalne.
4.8 Bought in Sainsbury, liked by James, not me , but good ghggggggggvggggggghhhbhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
3.5 Bottle from local Aldi. Has a restrained aroma of malts with traces of nuts and marmalade. Pours a bright copper with a small off-white head. Hops are to the fore in the mouth, but there’s also plenty going on underneath. Hints of toffee, orange peel, raisins and malts with a somewhat cloying texture. Bitterness lasts in the finish, but there’s still fruit there as well. Certainly an enjoyable beer, and very drinkable.
3.1 Old rating from 01-03-15 - 500ml bottle, pours brown with a off white head. Aromas & tastes of earth, bread, hints of toffee & malt. Medium body. Moderate bitter finish.
4.3 Bishops Finger
3.0 Sweet
2.9 Decent strong bitter, nothing special
3.6 500ml bottle, served room temperature in a straight pint glass. Russet brown colour, with a off white head,. Malty but bitter flavour, with a hint of Christmas cake fruitiness. A very pleasant strong traditional ale, which leaves a lovely bitter after taste.
4.2 I really enjoyed Bishops Finger. Lovely colour and smooth taste. Could easily drink another one.
3.0 Аромат. Слабый, ржаной солод. Старт: отчётливо ржаной вкус со слабой горечью. Финиш солодовый. Карбонатность умеренная.
3.8 Really enjoying this, aroma subtle malt molasses but nothing great to speak of there. But lovely mouthfeel, smooth bitterness. Balanced. Leaves a delightful fine coating in mouth. Alcohol not overwhelming but counterbalanced with flavour. Being drawn towards these types of ale. I wish I had some more besides one.
3.4 Bottle, BBE in 12 months. Dark amber pour, small head which dissipates quickly. Aroma of roasted malts, toffee, a little nutty. Mild carbonation and body. Taste of deep roasted malts, a little fruitiness of dark berries which adds a pleasant balance, some sweetness which is just enough to counter a moderately high bitterness which is present from start to finish. This packs a decent punch and although is not as sessionable as Shepherd Neame’s other bitter ‘Spitfire’ I think it’s a better beer overall.
3.0 Malt aroma. Also dominates flavour. Some fruitcake? Gentle bitterness. Goes down well.
2.7 Pours a copper color with white head head. Malty and cardboard aroma and taste. Notes: bottle from the Britshop, Jul ‘20
2.7 Malty with a strong aftertaste
3.7 Pours a clear, deep, dark amber amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity, caramel, slightly grainy malt, toffee and herbal hops, with some dark fruit and red berry accents of fig, raisin and red currants as well. Taste follows the nose, with a good balance of biscuity, caramel, slightly grainy malt and herbal, hops, with some dark fruit and red berry notes of fig, raisin and red currant, as well as a distinct toffee presence and just a hint of pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some caramel malt, toffee and dark fruit lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. This is a pretty nice English Bitter with a good balance of sweet malts, bitter, herbal hops and distinct toffee and dark/red fruit notes, as well as just a hint of pine. Starts out a little sweet, but is being balanced nicely by a good bitterness in the finish. Quite an enjoyable, expressive and well-balanced brew.
2.3 Very average ale, struggled to smell or even taste the toffee. Only good thing was that it didn't taste overtly strong.
Gelungene Abwechslung
3.5 500ml bottle from the Co-op, Epsom. Pours clear amber brown with a white head. Aroma of malt and toffee. Maybe a hint of burntness. Bitter finish.
4.0 Im Glas Dunkelbraun bis Rot, wenig Schaum, im Aroma Malz, Salbei, Honig, dunkle Beeren, am Gaumen mittlere Bittere, praktisch keine Süße, dezente Kohlensäure, sehr interessantes Bier
3.5 Dark Copper, Clean, off-white beerhead, with frothy, creamy and lacing foam, Good retention. The flavor has intensive biscuit, light caramel, toffee and toasted bread, beautiful malty characters. Medium sweetness, soft carbonation, Medium bitterness, and smooth touch. The hoppy flavor is still detectable, like herbs, earthy, spices and tobacco. However the mainstream is malty traits. Nice to enjoy.
5.0 Big, strong ale hailing from Kent. Very strong taste which is my preference. This is one of my favourite mass-produced ales.
3.3 Aroma and taste: earthy English hops, floral, malt biscuits, fruity, a bit jam, medium bitter, drinkable, not bad.
3.5 Gorgeous copper coloured beer , healthy beads , small head ... pungent , golden syrupy - rich malty aroma .. . Thick frothy mouthfeel , very malty , biscuity ... delicious ... bitter , balanced .... oh , in a land down under , wish I could drink this frequently : yum , cheers !
3.0 Shepherd and neame Bishops finger A dark pour with white thin head Strong malty ale Bottle version
