Shepherd Neame India Pale Ale (Bottle)

Shepherd Neame India Pale Ale (Bottle)

Bottle: Filtered.

Hailing from the tradition of 18th Century IPAs, which relied on generous hopping to protect exports during arduous journeys, this modern incarnation retains the strength, body and strong hop character which is synonymous with this beer’s provenance.

A glorious showcase of the distinct, heavily hopped beers for which Shepherd Neame is famed, India Pale Ale delivers potent bitterness, offset with generous amounts of pale ale malt to deliver a balanced, yet uncompromising brew.

2.6 Bottle from Asda. Bronzey-amber with a middling off-white head and a light fizz. Smells of caramel, metal and dust. Taste is a little better with sweet caramel up front, some biscuit, a touch of spice, an earthiness behind, and a light dryness in the moderately bitter finish. But the metal is still there with a hint of cardboard too - I suspect this has been heavily pasteurised. Not great.
3.6 Little bit fruitiness, brown sugar, rustic hoppy notes fills the nose with a definitely dry taste of herbal and tea-like hoppy notes, light caramel and some kind of tobacco. Classic English IPA, nothing left to say.
4.0 Pours amber red, white head. Aroma of biscuits, hints of fruits. Taste is a bit sweet, low bitterness. Flavors of biscuits, fruits, malty notes. Slick texture, medium body, average carbonation.
3.2 Barwa bursztynowa, klarowna. Piana kremowa, drobno pęcherzykowata. W smaku i aromacie, lekkie brytyjskie chmiele. Goryczka niska. Słodowe
3.7 .5 bottle. Clear dark copper, low, stable, creamy, off-white head, some lacing. Aroma caramel, malty, fruity, toffee, slightly citrusy, hints of grain coffee. Taste full, sweetish, smooth. Carbonation medium to high, tingling. Bitterness rather high, short, herbal. Aftertaste grassy, flowers, toffee, biscuits. Quite nice EIPA, thoroughly enjoyable.
3.5 Bottle sampled at Tallink-Silja Symphony between Stockholm and Helsinki. Big semi lasting white fluffy head. Clear amber color. Big malty aroma with a touch of caramell malt. Firm bitterness and nice maltiness. This is a good atempt too brew a historic Ipa that it might have tasted in the old days.
4.0 Old British school. India pale ale typowa dla wysp, wyrazna zalegajaca w przelyku goryczka, nuty karmelowe, delikatne, opiekany rumiany chlebek, troche toffi, cukierki werter;s orginal, ziolowe, czaber i inne moje ulubione cuda. piana nie naganna srednia ale z koronka, trwala, jasno bursztynowa klarowna barwa. i like it so.
3.5 Butelka 0,5 l. Kolor miedziany, klarowne. Piana barwy brudnej bieli, obfita, gęsta, trwała, z bardzo dobrą koronka. W aromacie nuty ciasteczkowe, biszkoptowe, karmelowe, toffi, żywiczne, ziołowe. W smaku karmel, biszkopt, nuta opiekana, ziołowość, żywica, tytoń, finisz goryczkowy. Pełnia średnia, wysycenie średnie do średnio wysokiego, goryczka średnio niska do średniej. Smaczna angielska ipka, klasyczny przedstawiciel stylu, bez fajerwerków ale i bez większych zarzutów.
3.5 At parents house on bday
3.0 Pours a clear and flat reddish amber with medium slightly off white head that somewhat lasted. Aroma is malt and warm spice. Taste is molasses malt nicely balanced with acetone bitterness that ramps up as sweet declines. Medium body, slightly oil mouthfeel and almost no carbonation. Overall, a nice brew but to me seems a bit to clean and clear, I like em dirty.
Klasyczna IPA w dobrym wydaniu.
3.6 Bottle from my local grocery store ‘Loco’. Pours a clear copper colour with a medium sized thick creamy white head. Aroma is fruity with caramel, toasty bread and a little spice. Taste has lots of caramel and burnt toasty bread with peppery spice. There is also a tobacco, leathery and earthy note that lingers on the palate on the bitter finish. Medium to full body, average carbonation and smooth slightly oily mouthfeel. Seems suitable for the colder months. Quite a good beer.
3.7 Pours a clear, deep amber coloration with a ruby tint and a medium, frothy head. Smells of bready, grainy, slightly caramelly malt and grassy, herbal, slightly resinous hops. Taste follows the nose, with a good balance of bready, grainy, slightly caramelly malt and grassy, herbal and slightly resinous hops, with just a hint of orange peel and pine coming through as well. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some bready, grainy malt and herbal, resinous hops lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. I think this makes for a pretty nice English IPA with a good balance of malt and hops. While the hops are a little bit in the background here, with the grainy, sweet'ish malts setting the tone, there are definitely some good bitter, herbal and slightly resinous notes to this, with just a hint of citrus as well, balancing out those malts nicely. While it may not be bursting with hop aromatics, an English IPA isn't really supposed to be. It's more about the balance, which works out very well here. Overall, this makes for an enjoyable example of the style that is well-balanced and goes down easy.
3.3 500ml bottle from Auchan store, drinking it on 12/08/2021 Pours a clear amber with a medium sized frothy beige head and moderate lacing, quite visible carbonation with upwards going small bubbles. Good aroma of malt, fruity notes including come citrus and grapefruit, berries, baked apple, also caramel, toffee and good herbal, resinous and earthy hops that mix well together, not just hoppy forward aroma. Taste is malty and moderate to medium sweet with good caramel, fruit notes grapefruit, berries, toffee and biscuit, then moderate but kind of lingering bitter hops, quite earthy and spiced hoppy finish. Could be more bitter for sure but i still find it balanced and very easily drinkable like it is, quite fresh and interesting taste too. Medium body at best and slightly oily texture, moderate carbonation and very easy to sip, 6.1% abv that doesn't get much noticed.. very easy and smooth but really ok tasting, maybe not that much of an IPA overall more like a malty hoppy ale but quite enjoyable and the one that you can really relax and enjoy, surprisingly light and pleasant taste and mouthfeel.
3.2 Clear cobber with a moderate white head. Aroma: Malt: Caramel, honey, tobacco. Hops: Herbal, grassy. Mouth: Bitterness noticeable, but combined with some fruity sweetness. Medium body, watery, medium carbonation.
3.9 500ml bottle served in a barrel pint glass. Amber ale, with a white head. Malty alcoholic aroma. Malty biscuity flavour with old fashion hoppy aftertaste. Good head retention and lace on the glass. Doesn't drink like a 6.1% beer. Slightly over carbonated. I would imagine a bottle conditioned version of this beer would be e even better.
2.9 0.5l lahvové zakoupené ve vratimovskem hypermarketu JIP. Dost old school ipa. Dle mých osobních preferencí mi nechutná.
3.4 Appearance- amber, clear, with a small beige fizzy head. Aroma- malt, hops, toffee, bit of fruitcake. Taste is malty, toffee, hop bitterness, raisiny dark fruit, bit of caramel and marmalade. Lengthy finish with hop bitterness.
3.9 Different India pale ale than what I've been used to. More malty, less biting hops. But the flavours mix well together. After having a lot of IPA's lately which are a bit the same, this was a welcome change
3.1 500ml bottle from Asda, Burgh Heath. Pours clear amber with a white head. Aroma of malt. Malty aroma with mild hops. Sweetish finish. 636313
3.5 Bottle. Clear dark copper colour with a relatively small foamy slightly off-white head, nose is malty, yeasty, roasty and citric with notes of overripe banana, toffee, grapefruit and lemon tarte, taste is sweet, malty, roasty and citric with a moderately dry and zesty finish.
3.0 Aroma : Medium toasted sweet toffee malt, light grapefruit citrus hoppiness, hint of earthy leaf mulch. Taste : Body is on the thin side of medium. Short astringent citric bitter hoppy hit up front. Just a trace of the sweet toffee malt in the background. Light dry lingering finish. Better than the average English IPA
2.8 500ml bottle. Pours deep copper with an off-white head. Aroma: caramel malt, earthy hops, light floral. Taste: light sweet & moderate bitter, toffee, sweet caramel, apple and berry hints. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a light hoppy bitter close. I never get on with SN beers, maybe it's the yeast.
3.1 Nice, smooth, sweetness a bit over the top though. No distinctive discernable aroma on this sample. All the other good standard bits as expected.
3.2 Nice amber colour with a thin head. Aroma of malt and caramel. there are some fruity hops and a moderate bitterness. Well balanced smooth old style IPA. If you are used to modern IPA, this beer tens towards a bitter. Main disadvantage is that the taste goes away very fast, which keeps you drinking.
3.4 Pours an almost transparent clear copper, with one finger of firm and dense white head. Good persistence and some hints of lacing. Quite intense and pretty interesting aroma shows a layer of toffee and caramel malts, a grassy/piney undernote, floral hops and citric hops bordering red fruits, plus a light spicy hint. In the taste: caramel and toffee malts sweetness, some kind of 'ripe' citric fruitiness, which as mentioned borders red fruits. Light floral hops and slight spiciness too. Sweetish entrypoint and balanced finish and aftertaste. The taste is overall complex and quite intense as the aroma, but not equally defined/clean. Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. Strangely 'burpy' given the not too high carbonation. An overall enjoyable example of classic english ipa.
3.5 Nice amber colour with thin head. Aroma of malt, caramel, burnt butter. Moderate to low carbonation and smooth on the palate without being syrupy. Taste of sweet malts, caramel, slight fruity hops with a moderate bitterness. Well balanced smooth old style IPA - nice. Superior to Marston's 'Old Empire' which I have had recently in a similar style.
3.2 Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Surprisingly malty aroma for an IPA. Pours a crystal clear, chestnut colour with a small head that dissipates to form patchy lacing and a decent collar. Good balance between malt and hops. Not what I would call a full on IPA, more a combination of an IPA and a red ale. Medium body and carbonation. Mild bitterness.
2.9 Malts and dark ripe fruit with bonfire toffee bitterness. Dark amber old English style IPA. Hoppy but without the pine and resin expected in modern style ipa's. Bit too bitter for my liking.
