Shiner 97 Bohemian Black Lager

Shiner 97 Bohemian Black Lager

A Bohemian Black Lager is a rare and delicious style of beer, referred to in Germany as "Schwarzbier". Shiner Bohemian Black Lager remains true to this old-world style by using imported Czech Saaz and Styrains Hops and select roasted malts to make it our darkest beer. First brewed to commemorate our 97th anniversary, this Bohemian Black Lager remains true to the old-world heritage of the German and Czech immigrants that settled Shiner. Prosit!

3.2 12 ounce bottle to wine glass A: black, tan head that disappears quickly A: Nose: slight malty nutty aroma, Taste: light bitterness MF: medium body, fizzy OA: good beer, ok to repeat, not to look for Drank: April 28, 2016
2.4 Bought at a market place. Pours dark with a tan head. Smells of licorice and a tad earth and maybe a hint of smoke. tastes of licorice and some dark chocolate. Palate was a tad watery. Overall? This is pretty much a staple at the local Shiner Texas brewery, simply better than a Budweiser.
2.3 It’s just not a decent Black Lager. The taste is far too light. It’s got a decent head but, it has no complexity. The taste quickly fades from the tounge and the beer is very watery tasting.
2.6 12oz bottle to tulip. Pours black/ruby red, cream ring head. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, oatmeal. Taste of same with roasted malt backbone. Light body, way too much carb.
3.5 12 oz. into pint glass. Poured with minimal head that dissipated quickly but left a wonderful black color. Taste was very very light and a little sweet. Surprising but refreshing.
3.9 From a bottle into a glass. The pour is a a dark brown/black with a above average c02 , oatmeal, light body, carmel notes. It’s great.
3.0 Bottle at mediterranean grill, fairfield jfk. Reddish black color, tanned head. Aroma has roasty notes, licorice, some chocolate. Pretty light roasty body but pure taste. Hint of chocolate and coffee.
3.2 Opaque Black Color, Medium Foam Head, Decent Lacing. Faint Toasted Malt Aroma. Lightly Toasted Malt, Light Bitter Finish. Light and Mellow. Simple but Drinkable and one of better ones from Shiner Lineup... Decent. OK.
3.4 Robust, roasted malts smooth balanced taste, Dark Brown/Black color, mild nose, Medium body.
3.2 From 12pz bottle to lager glass. Pour is a black color, thin beige head. Nose is roasted malt, biscuity, light hop. Taste is light bodied, mostly sour. Kind of a flat taste with a sharp finish.
2.7 Bottle. Pours nearly black with frothy head that lingers. Mild caramel aroma over medium carbonation. A bit thin for the style with limited flavor.
2.5 Pouca espuma e nao persistente. Aroma com um q de sabão. Sabor pouco marcante, com torrados e baunilha. Nada demais.
3.6 Originally rated on 1/31/08. Have to say this is my favorite shiner product so far. It pours out a black body with a tan head, slightly malty with a slightly bitter aftertaste. I prefer the sam adams black lager to this one however it costs about a third less. worth trying.
3.3 Pours mahogany tinged black into a shaker. Mocha head with little retention recedes to mottle surface. Dusty cocoa aromas. Dry with sweet dark caramel and toasted nuts front to back. Medium length cocoa finish.
3.3 Malt and bittersweet chocolate are the loudest points in this beer for me. Not bad, well balanced, nothing too awesome but a very enjoyable beer 🍺
3.8 Deep mahogany, lasting creamy khaki head. Aroma is light cocoa, toasty base malt, some light fruitiness. Flavor has more character. More cocoa, some nice light roastiness, dark fruit, some toast and caramel. Semi dry. Bigger light to lighter medium body. Maybe the best Shiner brew I’ve had, but I am a sucker for schwarzbier these days..
3.3 Pours black with quickly dissipating lacy head. Aroma of burnt toast. Taste of carmel and bread, maybe a little coffee. Slightly sweet, very little hops. My first schwarzbier so take that as a caveat
1.6 Got this as part of a variety pack my Mom picked up in Texas, while visiting my Uncle. I am not a fan of dark beers and this is just not my thing. However, it is not as bad as I was expecting and I would guess that those who like the style would enjoy it.
2.3 12 oz. bottle. Pours black, with small off white head. Aroma of coffee and malt. Taste of coffee and malt.
3.6 Bottle. Roasty, bit of choc, malty sweetness, nice enough. Little bit of spice.
3.1 Brown pour, bit of foam. Aroma is soft, roasted, hint of chocololate. Taste is easygoing but not watery, you can feel the roast but there is not too much of it. Aftertaste is short, nice and drying. Schwarz is not really my favourite beerstyle but I guess this one has been executed quite well.
3.0 Thanks ShoulderBroken for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing coffee brown and barely any foam. The nose shows subdued round malts. The palate is fully carbonated and medium bodied showing mostly lager flavors of simple malts and slight black sugar flavors.
2.9 Dark brown color. Fairly non description nose with some adjuncts. The mouth is light with some roasted malt character. Slightly acidic, but mainstream accented
3.3 12 oz. Bottle poured into pint glass from sampler 12 pack. Quite delicious. Dark malt gives way to nice hop notes. Very drinkable.

3.8 12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, herbal, light pepper, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Very clean on lager flavors with zero yeast ester notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly creamy/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very good schwarzbier style. All around good robustness and balance of roast/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
2.3 Drank from a twelve ounce bottle, traded from a fridge. Smells of roasty malts. Tastes watered down, slightly roasted, nothing really else there...
2.1 Poured from a bottle. Light brown color, small off white head. Light pepper aroma. Medium body with a light pepper malt flavor and a medium finish.
3.1 Bottle thanks to Eugene. Dark, nearly black, tan head with little retention. Some chocolate; soft roasted malts; thin fizzy body. Milky sweetness, lightly metallic, minimally bitter end. Overall: I’m pretty sure the only thing I’ve learned from drinking all these beers is that for the most part they’re all pretty good. This isn’t sexy in any way, but it isn’t unpleasant either. If a 6-pack found its way to my fridge it’d get drunk in short order.
2.8 pours unclear light brown, orange tint, with a small light beige cap, minimal retention/lacing. sweetish and almost burnt caramel matliness, spicy berries, vegetal matter, touch of smoke, ashes, licorice, hot chocolate mix powder, chalky. light carbonation, light body - watery; balanced if not dry spicy finish. weak but not horrid macro schwarz.
