Shiner Dunkelweizen (Winter Ale)

Shiner Dunkelweizen (Winter Ale)

Shiner Dunkelweizen is a crisp, hearty brew modeled after a Bavarian-style dunkelweizen, German for dark wheat. Shiner Dunkelweizen is fermented with an old-world technique called Kräusening, brewed to be smooth and rich without being heavy on the palate. Its subtle flavors come from the brew’s malted wheat and malted barley.

This beer uses the old Czech mashing technique of taking small portions of the mash and boiling, then mixing it back in the main mash. This technique, called ‘decotion’, takes a great deal more time... but develops the rich dark color and creates the body which is enjoyed in the finished beer.

3.1 Not really a winter beer. Amber pour with a two finger head. No lacing on the side of the glass. Medium body and carbonation.
2.4 Was not a fan. Felt the flavor was off and had a bad aftertaste. Would not call this a winter beer as I did not think it had enough of the rich maltiness associated with winter beers.
2.5 Not the best winter lager that I’ve had, but it’s certainly not the worst. There was something in the taste/aftertaste that disagreed with me.
2.8 12oz bottle. Poured a clear deep amber brown color with a deep red hue. Has a medium tan head that settles out thin and stays. Very good lacing. Aromas of sweet malt, and wheat with a hint of brown sugar. The taste is pretty much the same along with a hint of caramel and raisins. Has a smooth and crisp medium body with moderate carbonation.
4.1 Bottle pour-Republic of Texas in San Antonio. Nice deep color. A nice balance between the lightness of a wheat brew with a deep maltiness. Mouthfeel/palate experience alone warrants giving this beer a try.
2.9 Boring boring boring. Very little wheat beer character and definitely in the american style of things. Lots of dirty dusty caramel.
2.8 poured a dark amber with beige head. aroma was strong with caramel malt. flavor was caramel and some dark roast. not bad need to try again with more time to rate.
4.9 Maybe the best beer SHINER makes. Toss up against their Kolsch. I really really enjoy this one. The taste is very very unique.
3.4 Pours a mahogony, thick head. Smells like burnt roast, bread, caramel. Taste like citrus, malt, caramel, hint of coffee. Better straight out of the bottle.
2.5 aroma is ok but beer looks a lillte like a flat coke the taste leaves palete very fast, beer is very easy to drink wish it had a bigger head it was not much there
2.2 (Bottle) Malty aroma on opening that was a bit too light on the nose for a dunkel, khaki-colored head that dissipates quickly. Carbonation is the primary flavor, with a very light hint of roasted flavor at the end. Almost no aftertaste, except for an odd metal taste, and no lingering body feel in the mouth after swallowing to speak of. Okay, but nothing special.
2.0 12 oz bottle pours a coppery color. Aroma is of sweet malt. Taste is metallic, bitter and puckering. Not at all what I expected from a dunkel.
2.8 aroma is earthy with a red color. The tent is clear with a minimal head, very bitter taste and salty. light body, soft carbonation and a very bitter after taste. Overall Impression; the smell hits the mark, however; the taste is a little off. Still a very good effort at a traditional German beer.
3.0 12 0z. bottle, amber color dunkel with decent body, tastes of soy sauce and sushi rice, not bad
3.2 deep amber pour with a small cream head. creamy malt scent with dried fruits as well. the thickness impressed me and the flavor isn’t bad either.
2.7 Okay Dunkel, but I expected more flavor. Kind of bitter, and different than other Dunkels that I have had - not as dark. Kind of malty, a little wheaty, but overall not a drop me on my knees beer.
2.9 Reddish amber with a mediocre cream colored head. Wheat and caramel aromas. Flavors of grain, a little fruit and caramel.
3.0 Pours rose red with a thin tan head. Smells earthy. Tastes sweet and spicy with a fair amount of earthiness. Decent.
2.9 Moderate malts and wheat in thee aroma. Frothy, brown head. Some very marginal lacing and fair retention for a Shiner. Redish-brown in color. Taste is malty with a salty finish and a lot of copper-metallicyness in the finish. Not sure what that is from, but it is in the bottle as well as my glass, so it isn’t a contaminent I added. Otherwise the texture is dryish with, as usual, a bit too much fizzyness in the carbonation. So-so, although it is very sippable.
2.5 Tea brown with typical Spoetzl carbonation. Head is a finger or so and slowly fades. Nice malty flavor with a clean finish. Less "Spoetzl"ly than most of their other brews. Easy to drink, not much if any complexity in the finish.
3.1 very good refreshing winter ale. I liked what was happening with this I feel that it could be better with some refinement. This is probably my favorite Shiner though. Wouldn’t buy again at present
3.0 12oz bottle acquired in trade with lb4lb (thanks!). Poured a deeper orange color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of burnt grains, caramel, and wheat. Tastes of chocolate, wheat, caramel, and roasty. Noticeably missing where any traces of bananas and cloves/spices.
3.2 Brownish-ruby colored pour. Has a small, cream colored head. Aroma has hints of roasting. Taste has strong hints of roasted malts. Finish left me a little disappointed....perhaps a little metallic.
3.1 12 oz. bottle poured into the trusty stein- poured semi transparent, off white head quickly went away, mild carbonation. Aroma of very light caramel and roasted malt. Hits the mouth with a medium body, defined malt, smooth and mild finish of hops. Very pleasing, and good for the price.
2.8 Nice dark amber color. A grainy smell almost reminiscent of blueberry bagels is sweet and pleasing. The taste is sweet wheat and slightly fruity (it does not have any spicyness or sourness typical of a dunkelweizen). However there is no balance.
2.9 This was a good beer but I think it barely makes the Dunkelweizen catadory, so Im just going to rate this based on a basic winter ale. Was reddish in color with a flavor that should please the masses but not a beer drinker who favors dunkel’s. They should have just called this a "Winter Ale" although it would have been missing some of the spices that are commonly known in winter ales. Has a nice malty taste with a hint of roast. sweet.
2.8 THOUGHTS: Looked really nice but wasn’t cloudy and didn’t have a large head, so it doesn’t look like a dunkelweizen. An OK beer, but an awful dunkelweizen. I wouldn’t recommend this one. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium to dark reddish amber with great carbonation and a small, creamy, white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was light roasted , burnt and caramel malts with very light chocolate and moderately yeasty with metallic notes, some wheat and a little bit of spice and, I may have been imagining this but, cola too. The flavor initial flavor was lightly sweet, while the finish was moderately sweet and moderately to heavily bitter and also sour with an average duration. The flavor was roasted and burnt malts. It was very metallic and burnt with a little chocolate or coffee. The light to medium body was watery and a little dry with fizzy carbonation and a metallic and slighlty chalky finish.
3.7 A dark beer with little carbonation. Has a sweet, sugary, molases aroma. It tastes really good too, almost like a desert beer. It’s really sweet.
2.8 bottle, pour dark copper wjith offwhite head, very malty roast nose, sweet malty bitter finish, nice beer.
4.0 Poured a thin head which dissipated immediately. Really nice looking reddish amber color. Aroma is a dried fruit (raisin/prune) with hints of spice (clove/nutmeg). Light roasted nutty malt flavor. Overall... a really nice winter brew. I’m hooked.
