Shiner Kölsch (Summer Stock)

Shiner Kölsch (Summer Stock)

Effervescent, this summer brew is fashioned after the Kolsch biers that originated in Cologne, Germany, in the 1800s. Hallertau, Magnum, and Mount Hood hops combine for an especially clean, crisp finish.

1.5 Bottle. Pours a pale straw color, smallish white head no retention or lacing to speak of. Nose is grainy, smells mainly like beer-piss. Mouth is watery and grainy, no finish. This is to a Kölsch what a steak from Sizzler is to a dry aged rib-eye. I’ve had NA beers with more character.
2.0 Light clear gold body. Pure with head that completely disappears. Slightly hoppy. No depth of flavor.
3.6 Pours attractive clear yellow. Aroma is pleasant, mildly sweet, mild grass notes. Taste is again a well balanced, cream ale type beer. Refreshing and light.
2.9 12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear golden amber with a medium sized creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of grain, raw malt, mild grass, tart citrus. The taste is raw grain, caramel, citrus and grassy hops, a bit of apple. Thin-medium bodied. Not great.
2.9 A couple different hop flavors. A crisp beer. Admittedly refreshing and clean as described.
2.9 Bright sunshine gold in color, with a gigantic white head. Smells a little like grass. Floral and hay notes. An okay kolsch.
3.1 Clear gold with a fair amount of visual carbonation. Small white head that quickly dissolves. Light malty aroma with a little floral hops. Nice crisp clean mouth feel that is unoffensive. Refreshing finish. An above average Kolsch.
4.1 This is a good beer. Balanced, pleasant flavor from start to its crisp finish. Pleasantly effervescent. This came unexpectedly in an assortment of Shiner beers. and was a pleasant surprise. Quite refreshing. This makes me want to revisit the Kolsch variety and explore some more different ones. Serving type: bottle
2.9 Pours a clear yellow with a an off-white head which doesn't last long. The nose is slight but what there is is malty. The taste is good balance of malt to hops, with a slight nod to the hops. There is also a bread note along the the way. The mouthfeel is medium with a crisp finish and little to none aftertaste. Enjoyable.
2.2 OK, I dont know how many slightly below average, totally unoffensive yet unchallenging golden light beers one brewery can make, but here’s another. Refreshing, lightly bready malt flavor...clean. Golden in color, slight white head.
3.4 Comes out of the tap a pretty clear and slightly orangy amber. Crisp, fruity aroma has a powdered-drink undertone. Flavor is not strong but is pleasingly crisp, fruity, a little dusty and a little sour. Smooth, fizzy texture is powdery and just a bit on the thin side. A refreshing way to welcome summer - which it might as well be right now in Atlanta! (And it’s only mid-May!)
2.5 Clear gold, with a small whitish head. Aroma of grain and a bit of hops. Taste is slightly hopped pale lager, and body is thin. Refreshing and reasonably drinkable, but nothing to seek out. There just isn’t much here.
3.8 Spoetzl Brewing Company--Shiner Kolsch--2005 12 oz. Bottle. 4.41% ABV?--20 IBU’s? (4.0 / 5.0 ) Lacy head. Clear bright straw gold color. Crisp mild floral hop front. Tasty slightly creamy mild butterscotch smooth mild sweet ester fruit body. Refreshing smooth mildly tangy mild hop citrus end. Sampled 8/6/2005.
3.2 Amber of color with a white head. An aroma of hops and crispy. A flavor of hops, fruits and fresh.
1.9 I love Kolsch, but this one doesn’t quite add up. Good color and head retention but a weak nose. Will have to retaste from another six pack sometime soon. Clean on the palate with a pleasant herbal dryness. Finish is rather short but crisp. Still very refreshing and thirst quenching, but that is to be expected from probably any example of the style. Good to see another addition to the domestic Kolsch list but this one is miles behind Pyramid Curve Ball and others.
2.9 Golden pour with a nice refreshing smell. Wheat and a little bit of hops. Nice on a hot summer day in Texas.
3.1 Overall Impression: Actually enjoy this one, it’s not a great beer, but for a summer style Kolsch (which was their goal!) it works pretty well, higher up for it’s style then many of the other Shiner beers.
2.3 Light gold pour, thin white head, a bit of a sweet smell, bitter from beginning to end, the only Kolsch I’ve had, so I’ve nothing to compare it.
2.4 A bit too carbonated for my taste. Didn’t really get much flavor from the hops. I felt this was more like a mass-produced larger beer...clean finish but little in the way of flavor.
4.0 Makes for a very nice summer sipper. Nice golden pour with the expected kolsch taste. Refreshing to the end.
2.0 Can’t say I cared for this one. Poured a clear golden color with lots of carbonation and a thin head. Light grainy aroma. Mild malt flavor with some bite on the back of the tongue. Not really bad, but not much there to recommend it ,either.
2.5 Very golden, kind of thin. Dry taste with lots of carbonation. Strange burning after taste though. Other than that, not a lot of flavor. Left me kind of thirsty.
2.4 Golden color with a moderate head. Aromas of caramel and grass. Tastes of light malts and grain. Crisp and refreshing.
2.7 Honey and caramel on the nose. Deep gold color without much of a head. Has a sugary sweetness, some floral notes, and a bit of a "dusty" taste. Very fizzy, light body, and crisp. Not remarkable, but not terrible.
2.7 12 oz. bottle, nice effervescent very light beer, very mild malt flavor, clean finish
2.1 Nothing too special at all. Crisp easy to drink summer beer. Wouldn’t buy again but wouldn’t refuse
2.2 this beer holds the same tantalizing mysteries that many artifacts from ancient anasazi culture do: that is, we simply cannot discern what it is, or what it is for. "kolsch" domestically is too often just a synonym for a weenie beer that arrives at the doorstep of an american standard lager just by taking a different route. i bought this during some of the hotter days of late summer; days when, out working, i thought that even my internal organs would overcook like cafeteria corn-on-the-cob in the unrelenting scorch. yet, when i placed this beer against a thirst born of extended exertion, coupled with heat unrelieved with shade, still it brooded heavily upon my palate and could no more erase the pangs of thirst in a pleasing way than had i availed myself of a luke warm bird bath. i offered the beer up before a daring palate-- one admittedly not well accustomed to the world of fresh kolsch-- but enamored of the notion of a german ale, fruity and yet clean, and again this beer sat like a goldfish confronted with astrophysics, recognizing no kinship with my preconception. the beer is mild grain soup of wheat, grass and corn, a pottage that could perhaps nourish a field mouse, but by comparison leaves us higher vertebrates pining for more. deserving of high marks for appearance, the bright wash of yellow could have been lifted from a school bus, the foam borrowed from the lather of a waterfall. alas, the aroma was weak with sliced apple, frosted flakes and the woody note that attends the chewing of a pencil. "balanced" in it’s unchallenging mild body, it has a slight malt liquor like sweetness, dwarfish malts, and a modest lime peel bitterness. it taints rather than tantalizes the thirsty palette. like the smudged and cryptic runes on a pre-historic temple, this is a recipe that will forever baffle beer archeologists.
2.4 Clear pale yellow color with a thin head. Clean crisp taste but nothing great. Some balance with wheat, hops, and malt in the aroma. Needs more in the taste.
3.5 Once again, the nose-in-the-air masses undervalue a well made beer. Not everything Shiner does is extraordinary but they nail this lesser known regional german style very well. Like some exotic cheeses, a good Kolsch has a slightly funky aroma combined with a light but malty sweet finish. Very well made and very easy to drink
