Shiner Prickly Pear

Shiner Prickly Pear

This small batch brew is the third in our Limited Edition Brewer’s Pride Craft Brew Series. A combination of Citra and US Golding hops gives this refreshing lager its citrus flavor and floral aroma. The brew’s signature tartness comes from the fruit of the prickly pear, a cactus native to our brewery’s landscape that’s hearty, rugged and unmistakably unique - qualities we surely appreciate. Prosit!

3.6 I’m young (New to loving beer) and this is my favorite cheap’ish brew! I’m a cactus nut so I guess thats also another reason I love it so much. Refreshing summer beer. I wish they sold it year round!citrus, light sweetness, lightly bitter, medium body, average carbonation,
2.9 Appearance- Medium brassy amber with a thick foamy white head. Nice lacing. Aroma- Malt, caramel, tart Flavor- Very fizzy, straw, tart fruit, some grass, No hops that I can taste, sweet and floral.
3.7 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 10/3/2016. Pours crystal clear deep orange/copper color with a 1 -2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big watermelon, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, pear, pineapple, lemon, toasted biscuit, light caramel, herbal, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of cactus fruit and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of watermelon, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, pear, pineapple, lemon, toasted biscuit, light caramel, herbal, and floral/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and slight fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of watermelon, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, pear, pineapple, lemon, toasted biscuit, light caramel, floral/toasted earthiness. Nice robustness and balance of cactus fruit and moderate bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/tart balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy/grainy mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a nice fruit beer. All around good robustness and balance of cactus fruit and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
3.0 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of foamy medium sized white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a softly carbonated transparent light purple hued colored body and a fair lacing. The nice aroma was pear. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering fruity aftertaste. The ok flavor contained notes of pear mild hops and fruity. An OK brew just nothing special.
2.7 Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub this beer poured a dark bronze color with a medium sized foamy white head that faded quickly and left no lacing. The aroma was sweet and tangy with a strong fruity presence. The flavor was sweet with pear, apple and artificial sugar. Long finish. Medium body. Meh.
3.0 Deep reddish amber beer with a medium foamy light tan head that has good retention and lacing. Nose of strawberry taffy, candied citrus, and sweet perfume. Flavor is less sweet than the aroma, but still quite sweet, with an unusual fruity flavor that dominates and a sugary aftertaste without much bitterness to counterbalance. What is a novelty initially quickly becomes cloying. Worth a taste, but not something I’d drink again.
2.9 Bottle. Pours golden with a thin white head. Aroma was fruity with pears & berries. Flavor was sweet and fruity with floral hops, pears and had some berry tartness.
3.3 Poured from bottle. Aroma of peach schnapps. Orange gold with bit of head. Tasting canned pear syrup, and that citrus cactus thing. Actually a pretty decent brew.
3.2 actually gave above average marks for app and aroma - definitely some nice pear in aroma - was hoping this would be a good summer beer but it wasn’t really refreshing - different beer, not bad
3.5 Pours a clear coppery orange with a thin white ring. Very pleasant fruity aroma of sweet berries. Thin body with light carbonation. Taste is crisp, clean, and smooth with a refreshing berry fruit flavor. The taste isn’t imitation or flowery. Not overly sweet. Fairly simple but very enjoyable.
2.9 Dammit Shiner, stop this. I know what you guys are doing with trying to market to the macro crowd with an interesting beer but it just does not work. Gold color, apple sort of taste, not appalling but tastes artificial and contrived. Like the equivalent of a Big Mac.... a terrible hamburger but a tasty enough food item to eat.
3.7 Pours another fizzy head, but it does stick around longer than the soda pop heads of the other two beers. The smell shows some fruit sweetness. The smell has a fruity note, almost like a perfume, in fact. The taste brings in that perfumey fruit with a very slight tartness on the back of the throat. This may go well as a dessert beer; although most such beers are pretty strong, this 4.9% abv brew would suit a lighter palate.
3.1 Quite dark Amber, clear. Light white head. Smelled very sweet, immediately on opening the can from several feet. Strong notes of pear. Quite sweet, some very light bitter grassy notes. Kind of artificial smelling. Clean mouthfeel, light body. Good amount of carbonation. Refreshing.
3.0 It’s not really my style, but it is super hot outside, I just took the dog on a bike ride, and I’m digging this. Higher score than expected.
2.6 Med amber no head. Aromas candy, pear, sweet tarts. Flavors grain, sweet tart that is unsweet, vegtable, pear. Lighty sweet. not good.
3.0 Sample at Hattiesburg fest. Clear golden amber color, white head. Fruity aroma. Taste is sweet fruit. OK.
3.0 From the bottle. Aroma is tropical fruit, fruit punch and grains. Taste follows nose.
3.2 12oz bottle. I was pretty hyped to try this one after having Oso’s rather excellent Prickly Pear Infection Groove. While this has some unique kiwi-agave tones, this pales is comparison. The base beer is sort of sweet, not really complementing the fruit so well. OK for what it is.
3.3 12oz bottle from Windsor Hy-Vee, in a Sam Smith pint glass. Aromas of ripe pear, banana and cantaloupe with an unexpected Chardonnay-like woody butteryness, some vanilla and a characteristic tangyness that definitely has me thinking prickly pears. Pours surprisingly dark, sort of a golden amber to red with a finger of foamy white head and wild effervescence clinging all over the glass and fizzing up in a torrent. Both dissipate tremendously over the course of 3-5 minutes. Rich malty caramel butteryness up front followed by ripe, sweet prickly pear-cantaloupe sweetness, with fruit and buttery vanilla lingering on the finish. An odd bird, almost like wine-meets-ale-meets-fruit beverage. Medium bodied, slick, sticky and mouthcoating. Easy enough to drink, but not quite the light refreshing summer beverage the packaging suggests. Not bad, definitely a one of a kind brew with many unexpected qualities. Have to ruminate on this one for a few more bottles. Prosit!
3.3 Enjoyed at BTBF 2016. Clear orange color. Fruity aroma. kool aid nose. Berry. Easy notes with fruity and lightly tart. Not too bad.
2.7 (bottle) clear, bright orange colour with a medium tall beige head; aroma of candy, jam; light, simple, soda like flavour with a long, very light bitter finish
3.0 11 May 2016, bottle. light gold, clear, some steady bubbles. nose is sweet, fruity, smells like fake syrup. thin body and moderately fizzy. tastes of something candy but can’t figure out what it reminds me of. meh.
3.0 6 pack, slammed these bad boys right outta the bottle on a hot almost Texas summer day. Ate some prickly pear fruit while I was in Peru and didn’t like it nearly as much as I do when its brewed into beer. Solid tasty beer if a little bit too sweet. Probably wouldn’t buy again
3.4 Much better than previous ratings. Decent aroma of cactus. Dark Amber color. Taste was beer like...but with fruit as well as hop bitterness.
1.9 Bottled. Pours raspberry soda rosé color. Not really any head. Aroma is raspberry soda. Flavor is, wow. Not good. It’s raspberry soda, but less sweet, more bland. I’m glad it isn’t sweet or cloying. But I’m not glad that it’s terrible.
2.5 Bottle. Aroma is...surprise - very fruity - but good! Taste is high in rhubarb, I could probably have this exact same experience having a bite of rhubarb pie and taking a drink of any standard domestic simultaneously. Oh well, I should have known better.
3.2 Bottle, shared by me... in the library... just now. Pours a light rust color with a medium sized head. The aroma is almost like sherbet right away... that bit fades and there is some nice sweet fruitiness and mild hoppiness. The flavor is reasonably sweet with a nice bitter kick for balance. Not cloying or sugary, but sweet no doubt... at times it sort of reminds me of a mango lassi... it’s big on fruit flavor with some pear and berry stuff happening, it’s got a nice bitey hoppiness & it’s got a low to medium level of bitterness. Yes, its sweet and sometimes it tastes like a freezy-pop, but it’s halfway decent in my book.
2.1 12-oz can. Pours a hazy pale gold with a thin off-white head. Sticky sweet artificial nose, some rubbery plastic there as well. Watery light fizzy body. Heavy sweet artificial sugary mid palate, also showing some rubbery plastic. Heavy sweet finish. Like drinking Mountain Dew out of an old tire.
3.0 Slightly watery the pear flavor is very nicely infused with a lighter smoothbase, alcoholic aftertaste
2.2 Golden pour, thin white head. Aroma is fruity - more apple than pear. Some pear in the flavor. It feels a little off. A weird bitter finish. Not great.
