3.1 Bottled. A golden beer with an off-white head. The aorma has notes of smoke, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of smoke, combined with medium notes of malt and caramel, leading to a bitter finish.
3.2 Bottle at Papsø. Clear golden coloured with a small white head. Malty aroma of caramel and smoke. Malty flavour of caramel, smoke and hops. Smoked and hoppy finish.
3.2 Bottle at Papsø. Pours clear golden with a medium white head. The aroma is light bacon, smoke, caramel and light fruit. The flavour is smoke, light plastic and caramel.
3.4 12 fl oz bottle. Pours clear and golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma is meaty smoked, slight ham to bacon note. Thick malty, smoked and ham flavoured. Slight bacon salty touch. Lingering smoked finish.
3.1 Bottled. Golden coloured. Quite clear. Dense off white head. Aroma of vague smoke, tea leaves, sweetness and some spice. Flavour is smoky and light meaty. Has grass and some caramel. Medium bodied. Vaguely smoked bitterness in the end.
3.0 Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours a clear golden with a small white head. Sweet malty nose with a distinct German style smokiness. Medium body, sweet malts Geramn smoke and a metallic touch. Subdued yet present bitterness. 270411
3.1 I like the old time label on the bottle. Pours a yellowish golden color into a pint glass. Straight out sweet and smoky. Plain sugar sweetness. Smokiness is strong. The smoke seems to be a bit chemical fake but it good. Light and tasty will work with a barbeque.
3.2 Aright, thid is a mild smoked malt Helles... the body is good, but the flavor is lacking. Okee-dokee, it’s passable for a smoked beer, but there are quite a dew better ones out there.
3.2 On tap at TJs Restaurant on 11/21/2010. Mostly clear golden amber body with a small frothy white head. Nice smokey aroma with a light pilsner malt background. Sweet pilsner flavor on a smoke background. Medium body with moderate carbonation.
3.1 It had never occurred to me to wonder what a cheap American lager might taste like if it employed some smoked malt but now that I have found a beer that’s just thought it makes me wonder just why I had never wondered that. A lot of people say various rauchbeers or beers brewed w/ peated malt taste like bacon and that’s just dumb because the smoke is all kinds of wrong. This, though, smells exactly like bacon bits. I wanna pour it on a cheese topped baked potato. Mesquite smoke and pork fat. Now that’s good eating. Tastes about the same but the smoke gets a bit more subdued. This is very surprisingly drinkable for a beer of such strong smoked character and I’m finding myself enjoying it more and more as I work my way through the glass. There is a cookie like malt sweetness underneath that works quite well and enough carbonation to keep it from cloying. This maybe won’t satisfy the strictest smoke hounds and beer geeks but this is much, much better than I ever would have expected.
2.8 12 oz. loose bottle, $1 @ Binny’s. It’s the coldest night of the year; why not pop open something with a label that calls out "summer" (or at least "pitchers and catchers report in ten days." Looks like any standard pale lager, a little more color, though, and a steady stream of bubbles. Smell is, what else, mesquite smoke. Not overdone, but you can see why this isn’t often used for beer. Taste lets some decent bready malt get through before the mesquite catches up. Can’t get too much further into it as the winter cold is making my sinuses act up. And there is some smokey aftertaste sticking in my throat, but no better or worse than anything from Bamberg. I won’t mind having a sixer this summer to go with some smoked pork loin.
2.5 Tastes like mesquite barbeque and not a lot of complexity. The helles aspect to it is obscured almost completely; it wasn’t bad really, just not that great.
2.7 12oz bottle. Golden pour with a decent amount of white head. Grain and smoke aromas - flavors of smoke, sweet malt, and more grain. Lots of mesquite, pretty drinkable but still can’t have more than 2 at a time. Not a bad backyard summer bbq beer - tastes much better when ice cold.
3.3 The first thing that surprised me about Shiner Smokehaus was the color. Every smoked beer I’ve had before this was dark brown or black, but this is as light as crisp as any macrobrew. Perhaps a shade more orange than yellow. But the smoke aroma is certainly there. The taste is pretty good, too. Starts out sweet, a little bit of hops, then that mesquite smokey flavor. Almost like liquid BBQ chips. This isn’t one I’d go for often, but at just under 5% ABV, the crisp texture, and easy drinkability, it’s perfect for a day of grilling!
2.8 Golden in color with a small white head. Aroma is of smoke, grain, and malt. Taste is of smoke, grain, light soap, woody hops, and sweet malt. Better than I thought it would be, but still not that great.
3.5 Bottled. Poured crystal-clear lighter golden with a sticky cap of white head. The aroma picked up sweet, airy smoked malts and bready notes, with light earthy accents.. definitely a smaller beer, but I really dug the nose. The flavor found tangy smoked malts on the front, with sweet pale and bready notes following at the core.. prickly carbonation and some sticky malts on the edges.. dry, quick finish.. no complaints. Light-bodied and rather refreshing on the palate.. soft and nicely balanced. This was surprisingly good.
2.9 Not a bad little brew. Wasn’t quite my taste in beer but I’ve always liked trying new beers. Never big on German style beers but the smokey flavor offset it nicely. Overall better than average little beer. It will be bought again as it seems perfect for grillin’ weather for on the food and in the cook.
3.3 (Sample Date: 5/6/2010 Source:Other) Light golden color with a rocky white head. Moderate maltiness and light smoke in aroma. Flavor has a hint of chocolate along with caramel and a light graininess. Dry smoky finish.
2.7 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright golden color with a medium sized soapy yellow-white head that faded quickly and left minimal lacing. The aroma did not have a whole lot going on but was lightly tangy with a mild mesquite note. The flavor was chewy and tangy with light wood, mesquite and smoke underneath. Medium finish. Medium body. Odd.
2.7 12 oz. bottle. Smells like a backyard smoker. Drank this one a few months back, but I still remember the aroma every time a neighbor has a cook out. Nothing too special about this one. Would probably go well with a pulled pork sandwich or brisket. Probably hard to drink more than one though.
2.9 Bottled 355ml. -Clear golden coloured, medium sized creamy white head, soft smoke nose. Slight malty, moderate grainy and very mild notes of smoked meat with odd metallic notes in the finish. So-so beer.
2.7 Bottle and served in pint glass: Pour a clean golden hue with a fading head and minimal lace. The aroma has notes of pils and vienna malts, smoke wood and sausage, some butterscotch and mineral water, herbal and grassy hops. The taste is lifeless pale and caramel malts with meaty smoke dominating them, way too much "corny"/ DMS flavor as well. The taste seems to get lost into a world a artificial liquid smoke with no real grain/hop/spice character to make me interested. This beer starts good and fades into the oblivion.
2.9 Bottle. Light malt and hop aromas of grain, roasted, herbs and dried grass, with hints of smoke and sugar. Head is small, frothy, slightly off-white with some spotty lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is crystal, sparkling clear amber. Flavor starts slightly sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly acidic and faintly bitter. Palate is light to medium, watery with a lively carbonation and finishes lightly dry. Light on everything including the smokiness, but nothing offensive about it and really easy drinking with some savory aromas.
3.3 Nice smooth flavor with a smoky aftertaste. Great grilling beer. Pours a nice golden yellow with a small white lingering head.
3.4 12oz bottle pours clear deep gold with copper hues and meek white head. The modest aroma puts out sweet sugary malts, some graininess, a touch of spicy hops and pork like smokiness. The taste has quick notes of lageriness, noble hops and vague sugary sweetness that got swallowed up by moderate smokiness. The smoke is mostly smoked bacon and charred wood and lacks any crazy campfire or bacon grease essence hugely smoked beers can have. It dries out a bit into the finish. Pretty approachable smoked brew.
2.6 Golden beer out of the bottle with a foamy off white head. Wet smoke nose. Tastes like bad beer with some fake smoke added. I like smoke beers but I’m not a fan of this one.
3.3 smells like BBQ sauce, which is pretty cool. Body seemed a bit thin. Taste is a bit of smoked malts with a hint of some form of BBQ sauce. Nice that its different, but not that super.
3.0 Golden yellow pour with a white head. Aroma is faint smokey bbq. taste is slightly smokey, with some cereal. It leaves a mild smoke finish. Average beer.
2.6 Bottle, clear golden yellow color with a small, firm white head. Aroma of smoke and cereal grains. Smoky flavor with a bit of grain and not much of a finish. Lot of carbonation and very light on the palate. Pretty uneventful, not one of my favorites.
2.5 bottle at Ft Wayne tasting - This brew has a mild smoke aroma. The flavor is of mild, sweet malt and of course smoke. It’s bubbly on the palate and utterly bland and underwhelming.
