Shiner Spring Ale Dortmunder

Spring has sprung at the little brewery in Shiner, TX (pop. 2,070). And with it, our newest brew, Shiner Dortmunder-Style Spring Ale. The Old World classic pours deep gold in color, with a white head and smooth flavor. 2.6 bottle. golden with small head. not my favorite style, but shiner’s done nothing to change my mind on that either. very bland.
2.7 Rated on 7-30-2010 (Bottle purchased at Siciliano’s Specialty Market in Grand Rapids, MI) This beer has a small, smooth white head with a short retention, transparent gold body, fizzy, fast rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is malty, crisp, floral hops, and earthy. The taste is malty, hops and crisp. The palate is soft carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. This is a so-so beer - not great, not bad. It lacks character and a bit bland tasting.
2.6 Bottle from Once Upon a Vine - South on 04/02/2011. Clear golden body with a medium creamy off-white head. Sweet fruit and caramel aroma. Dry caramel, fruit and floral hop flavor with some light graininess. Medium body with moderate carbonation. 5/2/4/2/9 - 2.2 Bottle on 03/21/2011. Clear golden body with a large frothy white head. Sweet pils malt and spicy hop aroma. Sweet pils malt flavor, some honey, and spicy hop flavor. Medium light body with moderate carbonation. 6/2/6/3/12 - 2.9
3.0 A - A crystal clear golden body with an active white head that forms a thin cap. S - Sweet cereal grain, fruity undertones-mostly apples, subtle grassiness. T - Sweet malt, honey, earthy grain, grassy hops, apples, finishes bitter with a grainy bite. M - Moderate carbonation, medium to full bodied. Flavors were earthy and grainy which gave the beer character. Good balance of sweet and bitter. Fuller body than I expected. Pretty good. Serving type: bottle 02-19-2012
3.1 Bottle. Good aroma. To pour, small head, Pale color. Good slight hoppy taste. Hints of floral flavor. Good for every day, not a bang with flavor though. If try it again.
2.8 Reviewed 1/5/2013. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. A: Pours a golden honey color with great clarity. The head is a decent looking one finger offwhite shade. Nice texture and lacing. S: Earthy minerals and a tiny hint of citrus. Certainly not an evocative aroma - but to be fair, the bottle is far older than it should be. T: There’s a lot of fruit punch-like sweetness not just on the opening flavors, but in general. Maybe it’s just the way the earthy hops interact with the caramel malts, but this is a dead ringer for Hawaiian Punch flavor-wise. I’m noticing a whiff of staleness in the malts/hops; expected given its age. M: Light and crisp, but perhaps a bit too sweet on the palate. A bit of finishing dryness would go a long way to cleaning up the mouthfeel some, but the syrupy profile does conceal the potent carbonation somewhat. O: Eh, it could have been worse given the circumstances (a 10 month old 6 pack of a not-so-highly-rated beer), so I’ll give it benefit of the doubt. Still a plain and uninspired offering.
2.9 This brew pours a clear dark golden color with a medium white head that evaporates quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet malt and fruit. Light body with flavors of grainy malt, fruit and mild hops. The finish is mildly bitter with a short grassy hops aftertaste. Average overall.
2.4 I’ve had so much luck with Shiner brews that when I saw a single of Spring Ale sitting on the shelf in early fall, I thought why not jump on the chance to enjoy a subpar past-its-prime Dortmunder and help free up some space for the incomng Octoberfest ales. Nice golden color, a lot like honey, and no real head. Lightly floral in the aroma and right into the taste. Picks up a little grass and dough. Not too terribly bad, but overpriced at $1.19 per bottle.
3.1 Light, crisp, refreshing. Spring indeed. When I saw that it was calling itself a Dortmunder I suspected that it was relabeled Shiner Frost that I had enjoyed during the winter of the previous year. I have since found my suspicions to be founded. All in all a good, easy drinking beer.
2.8 A rather easy beer to drink. Not much about it except it was good. Poured clear yellow, nice malty aroma. taste was clean and full. Slight hop flavor in the aftertaste,
2.6 Bottle. Sweet, bready barley malt aroma. Clear amber with a small beige head. Sweet biscuity malt flavor with a light grassy hops finish. Medium body and carbonation. A little too sweet for my taste, and hops were leaning towards harshness.
2.9 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of all foam finely sized off-white colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a softly carbonated transparent orange colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The mild aroma was malt hop. The crisp and clean mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish hoppy aftertaste. The mild flavor contained notes of hops. An OK brew just nothing special.
2.8 Another mediocre offering from Shiner. Darkish yellow appearance, effervescent, with a medium head. Light body, stake aftertaste. Some hay and honey.
3.1 beer has some pretty good fresh malt flavor with some caramel and honey character. foamy carbonation somewhat smooth and a little slick in the body. beer has a nice bitter finish and perhaps a little pepper in the hop profile.
2.8 Light nose. Clear yellow soft head. Light fruity malt and yeast. Crisp lemon peel. Grass. Ok summer ale. Not fantastic
1.8 Yellow, some white head. Smells grainy and earthy. Similar taste, grassy, some hops. Okay for a hot day.
2.6 Straight from the Bottle. Aroma is fairly grainy with a little sweetness. Taste is very light but kicks in on the finish with some light malt And a dry bite.
2.2 Perfect pour of head and carbonation. Pours a light copper. Nose of bread, honey and flowers. Taste is a little earthy, bold floral notes, and a tad bitter. Has a trace finish of copper pipe... Not bad, but not real good.
2.6 bottle. Pours darker than expected. Nothing special here. How do you spell average?
2.4 It pours a clear dark gold with a thin white head that leaves some lacing. The aroma is bascially nonexistant. The flavor pretty much follows suit. There’s possibly a hint of hop bitterness up front but finishes rather bland. I might detect a glimpse of honey but this beer is very uninteresting.
3.2 grass, earthy, lightly bitter, light sweetness, lightly sour, medium body, lively, enjoyed this more than i thought due to its light nature
3.4 12oz bottle. I’ve had this one a few times now, so about time for a review. Pours a dark amber/copper with a finger-width beige head. Nose is sharp with grassy hops, floral overtones, lemon zest. Crisp feel. Slick finish. Nice hop bite at the onset, followed by a faint citrus kick. Refreshing beer that really hits the spot each and every time.
2.7 Bottle. Clear gold pour with a white head that laces a bit. Nose and taste is grain, mild sweetness, and very mild hop. Pretty blah.
2.9 Light amber color that clarifies as the beer sets.. The flavor is a slightly sweet straw with a very slight strawberry fruitiness. Light body.
3.0 12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a clear dark gold color with an inch off-white head that sticked around for a little while. There’s also a decent amount of lacing left on the glass. The brew smells like bready malt and fruit (apricots?). It tastes like bready/grainy malt, dried fruit, and a bit of herbal hops. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit syrupy with moderate carbonation. Overall it’s not a bad brew at all. I bought this as a single bottle so I could try it. Not sure if I’d buy a 6 pack of this or not, but I would try this again in the future.
2.7 Lawnmower beer. Yellow and fizzy with just a touch of hop bitterness in there. I would like this on a hot day after sweating my balls off, but it is just a step above BMC.
2.2 Quite sweet, light grainy aroma. A light bready, light malt taste and fairly sweet, but not too substantial. Poured golden in color with slight white head. Good cold but not so much as the temp goes up.
3.1 12 oz. bottle. Pours gold with a thin, off-white head. The aroma is bread, barnyard must, and light apricots. The flavor is malty sweetness, and herbal hops. The palate is medium, grainy, and malty. Overall, not bad.
2.6 This is slightly sweet and rather floral beer. Lighter colored than I expected. Not much head.
3.0 Golden color with a decent sized white head. Aroma is of malt, light hops, and fruit. Taste is of malt, caramel, light hops.
