Shipyard Barley Wine Style Ale (Pugsley's Signature Series)

Shipyard Barley Wine Style Ale (Pugsley's Signature Series)

Barley Wine Style Ale is a big beer made with six different malts (Pale Ale, Crystal, Caramunich, Wheat, Chocolate and Roasted Barley) and balanced with a very full hop charge of Summit, Challenger and Fuggles hops. It is a deep reddish brown color with a complex fruity nose, a very full body, and an interesting balance between grains and hops which ends with a pleasing dry taste. To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. 8.5% alcohol by volume.

4.0 Pleasant, rich color and complex aroma. The palate is unexpectedly smooth, and the taste balances nicely between malty sweetness and bitter hops. Very nice aftertaste with a slight alcoholic heat. Not a typical american BW, but enjoyable all the same. This was rated "best in show" at a small tasting I arranged for my co-workers.
3.3 Strong but not overpowering taste. Deep reddish brown colour with a long lasting head. Good.
3.6 28 oct 3013, bottle. Brown and a bit hazy. Nose is meaty, dark toast, faint raisin. Thin body as mildly fizzy. Stale raisins, burnt toast, mildly astringent alcohol, maybe some slight port notes.
3.6 Pours deep deep deep red..... short off white head. Nose of well hidden alcohol, treacle, biscuit malts, and a lot of hops. Now, these hops don’t monstrously endanger the beer as they go from nose to palate. Sure.... it’s too young to be drinking right now. But, we’re not talking Old Crustacean. Butter tarts, pithy hops, burnt notes, cookie dough, spice bread. A little rum and wood. Tough of smoky butterscotch. I don’t have a big problem with this stuff. It’s not mind blowing. Solid.
3.1 Bottle from god knows when. This could be 5 years old. Zero hops but the malt part of this holds up ok. Soy sauce aromas. Sweet candi sugar flavor with a lot of caramel and even more toffee. Smooth drink. A touch of bitterness but I don’t think those are hops. Wonder what the hop profile is like fresh because this is kinda nice as is.
2.9 Aroma: Caramel, butterscotch, barley sugar. Not a lot. Strength is low. Appearance: Brown, very thick and creamy head that never falls down. Too much head. Taste: Again very caramel but with a strong bitterness as finish. Hops are very active. Caramel, malt and sugar notes are killed by hops. Too much bitterness for a Barley Wine. Sugars are powerless in this fight against hops. Mouth feel is thin without a lot of texture also. A DECEPTION.
3.6 Bottle @ Bishops Arms Järntorget, Göteborg. Hazy very dark brown with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and oxidized. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Sweet and rather bitter finish with warming alcohol. 250713
3.6 Pours a dark brownish mahogany color . Nose is woody with vanilla and carame. Taste is fruity with currants, raisins with caramel and vanilla. Finish is sweet with the same flavors, not your typical Barleywine . Quaff Score 8 / 10
3.6 On tap at Tampa Bay Brewing Coral Springs. Pours dark brown with a brown head and aroma of fruits and vanilla. Taste is similar, lots of vanilla up front with fruity, caramel notes and a dry, fruity finish. Nice barley wine, although it doesn’t drink as one
2.4 Bottle. This is a real letdown of a barley wine. Its missing so many pieces that i look for. Pass on it.
3.3 A - Pours a dark ruby brown with a 1 finger mocha head that forms a ceiling. Good lacing patterns. S - Chocolate covered raspberries, fruity malt, roasted/burnt grain, alcohol vapors. T - Dark fruits-figs, berries, sweet toffee malt, the chocolate seems to stay in the background, brown sugar, toasted brown rice. An herbal cocoa bitterness starts early grows towards the finish. M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. The alcohol is hidden well. The hops kinda threw me off. Moderately hopped for an English Barleywine. I didn’t mind too much though. Drinks good. I would buy this again if it was cheaper. Serving type: bottle 02-03-2011
3.0 Pours a very dark brown colour with low off white head leaving little lace. Aromas of rich sweet malt, caramel, toasted malts, sweet dried fruits, and a warming alcohol sensation. Flavour is sweet malt, warm alcohol, caramel, dried fruits, mild bitterness and toffee.
2.9 Thanks to cfrancis for this. Pours a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head. Aroma of sweet dried fruits, figs, chocolate and nuts. Taste is sweet caramel, figs, dried fruits and a heavy malt profile that finishes with some roast malt bitterness and some alcohol. Overall this is a very good and interesting barley wine however it doesn’t fit the style.
3.4 Bouteille 625ml.
3.3 625 ml bottle. Pours a ruby-tinted brown with a resilient beige head. Smell is malty and boozy. Taste is very malty, some caramel, not as tasty as I’d expect from a barley wine...Earthy and herbal hops, some lingering herbal hops post-finish. Medium to strong body, smooth mouthfeel. Medium carbonation. Not the best of barley wines.
3.2 Pours a very dark copper with a thick, pillowy beige head; very resilient. Active carbonation. Aroma is berries, vanilla, grass, cereal, spice. Taste is somewhat unexpected; bitter, dry, boozey, bitter fruit peel, grain alcohol and a bitter finish or roast malt and baker’s chocolate. Again, active carbonation keeps things bubbly. This beer caught me very by surprise. There’s something intense and punishing about this beer. I don’t think it’s terrible though. I feel like this would be a great beer to drink to follow a break up.
3.5 It poured a dark brown color with a small tan head. The aroma was of cocoa, bread and molasses. The taste was of molasses, cocoa and roastiness. Decent.
3.5 65 cl bottle @ HBF. Rated on 21.05.2010 Aroma is rather malty with some raisins. Flavour has harsh, sweet malt, some raisins, ripe fruits and hints of toffee. Too harsh, a barley wine in English way.
3.6 Pours a dark brown with a nice velvety beige top. Aroma is plum, raisin, wood and earthy malts. Taste is syrupy sweet malts, raisins, plum and earthy flavours.
3.5 625ml bottle 8.5% ABV King/Spadina LCBO (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) September 29, 2012 The beer pours a solid dark brown with black edges, and creamy tan coloured cap. The aroma is grainy malt, some roast, and some metallic hops. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was roasted malt, metal, and some molasses/maple sweetness in the mix.
3.4 A decent beer, brought in to the LCBO for a decent price of $8. Not what I expect from an English barleywine, very bitter finish, dark bodied, chocolate malts. Let’s see how my aged bottle from Maine holds up over the years.Above average carbonation. Good ingredients, but Not as drinkable as it could be.
3.6 Pours a dark mahogany with a 2 finger tan head leaving minimal lacing. Aroma of resin, biscuity malts, toffee and dark chocolate. Taste is malt sweetness up front with notes of dried fruits and citrus and a nice hoppy bite. Medium carbonation, slightly sticky mouth feel and mild alcoholic and piney hop finish.
3.6 625 mL bottle. Pours a dark brassy amber with a decent off white head. Minimal lacing. Aromas of cocoa, pine, aged malt and roasted cereal. Sweet, but not overly, with a great bitter punch and a lingering dryness. Tastefully complex.
3.5 625 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a clear reddish dark brown with average-sized tan head. Aroma is full of fruit (tropical and dark), caramel, treacle and leather. Flavour is quite malty with rich fruitiness - raisin, cherry, citrus - sweet toffee, brown sugar and leather. Bit of woodiness in the finish. Solid.
3.1 Brown bottle, 625 ml, purchased at the LCBO, savoured on December 7 2012; eye: ruby, clear, nice brown head that turns into a tiny ring, nice lacing; nose: malt, caramel, resinous hops; mouth: malt, caramel, resinous hops, alcohol finale in unpleasant alcohol with presence of caramel, medium-full body, good carbonation, mildly bitter, lightly sweet, alcoholic texture; overall: ordinary FRANÇAIS Bouteille brune, 625 ml, achetée à la LCBO, savourée le 7 décembre 2012; œil : rubis, limpide, pas d’effervescence, belle mousse brune qui se transforme en un petit anneau, bonne dentelle; nez : malt, caramel, houblon résineux; bouche : malt, caramel, houblon résineux, alcool, finale en alcool désagréable avec présence de caramel, corps moyen-corsé, bonne carbonatation, moyennement amère, légèrement sucrée, texture alcoolique; en résumé : ordinaire
4.2 625ml bottle: rating this after sampling it fresh, this sample has a couple of months in the cellar on it. Pours a hazed dark brown with ruby highlights. Sticky 2 finger cap like espresso foam, laces the snifter well. Aroma is complex dark fruits, treacle, raisin bread, cherry pipe tobacco, a little vanilla becomes more pungent as it warms - nice! Rich oleaginous mouth feel, robust body.fruity complex character, well balanced, well rounded very drinkable for such a big ale. Flavor profile begins with a rush of malt complexity, dried fruits and hops slamming the palate, then this becomes a complexity of flavors and tones whirling over the tongue - dates, vanilla, cinnamon bun, dark treacle, coffee, cocoa, dried cherry - then the finish becomes pleasingly bitter with resinous hops taking over as it goes clean, roasty and lightly dry with a lingering roast/bittering after taste. Wow! What a great Barley wine. This begs to be barrel aged.
3.4 Pours almost black with cocoa head. Smells like sweet grains, and dark fruits. Initially you get sweet corn syrup and malty flavours, but it finishes hoppy, with hints of roasted malt and cocoa. Interesting. Unlike any barley wine I’ve ever had.
3.7 Bouteille 625 ml. 8.5%. Couleur brune foncée, mousse beige mince. Arôme de malt, caramel, raisins. En bouche, pas trop sucrée, malt, houblon, fruits noirs. Finale légèrement amère. Très bon Barley Wine.
3.4 pours murky brown with a beige head, some retention and lacing. toasted and roasted wheat, fruity and caramel malts, woodiness, some sweetness, earthiness. some resin, herbal and citrusy hops - medium long finish. average carbonation, medium to full body. slightly harsh finish.
