Shipyard Imperial Porter (Pugsley Signature Series)

Shipyard Imperial Porter (Pugsley Signature Series)

Imperial Porter is a full bodied, very dark, malty beer with a good roasted character coming from the Crystal, Chocolate and Black Patent Malts used in the mash. Warrior, English Fuggles, and East Kent Goldings Hops balance the malts with a good hop bite. The beer has an OG of 1.070, rounding out after fermentation with just a slight residual sweetness and cutting dry at the finish. 7.1% alcohol by volume.

3.6 Pours black with a very thick tan head. Rich chocolate, coffee, caramel, and roasted malt aroma. Chocolate, toffee, nut, coffee and roasted malt flavors. Slightly astringent and underwhelming. Mild sourness, medium full body and slightly dry mouth feel. Lots of carbonation for a porter. Astringent chocolate and malt finish.
3.5 3/14/2013. 22 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Roasted malt aromas with chocolate and dark fruit. Malty and hoppy flavors with a dry finish.
3.3 Bottled 355ml @Beer Hunters. Rated 2.2.2013. Dark opaque brown color, tiny brown head. Sticky lactose aroma, hints of Worcester sauce. Medium-bodied. Syrapy, lactose, dark malts, cold coffee. Finish has pleasant sweet maltyness. Aroma and front are not so pleasant but not too bad overall.
3.7 12 fl.oz bottle @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Pours black with a tan head. Roasted malt, liquorice, toffee and coffee in the aroma. Dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee and nutty toffee in the flavour. Rather dry finish with bitterness.
3.5 12 oz bottle stored in a cooler with a best by date of 9/2012. Pours nearly black and is opaque in the glass. Nice tan head leaves some irregular lacing. The aroma is wht weak spot for me, with the dark roasted malts presenting a slightly sour note. Improved maredly with some warming/airing. The taste is better, with just an acceptable hint of sourness at times, but a little more burnt flavor than I prefer. Still, nicely rich dark malt flavor with a momentary hit of sweet up front.
4.0 Chocolate and toasted wood aromas. Very dark black with a nice tan head. The chocolate (milk, dark and bittersweet) comes through in spades. This is balanced by a nice earthy, somewhat acrid bitterness that’s probably from the hops and the roasted malt. There’s a chocolate covered cherry taste near the end too! While this sounds like a dessert beer, it’s really a full bodied and flavored English porter and it goes great with food (a sirloin in this case). Woody and chocolate flavors last through and beyond.
3.0 Pours a deep brown/black with a tan head. I full prune-ish, light hoppy aroma with a similar taste to match. Not one of my favorite Shipyard products.
3.5 Had a bottle in Chattanooga. Pours black with minimal head. Lots of malt and chocolate. Fairly sweet with a bitter finish. Ok beer.
3.3 Bottle at Kaisla. Black color, white head. Bitter taste with coffee, chocolate, hops, vanilla, nuts and very roasted malts. Bitter taste with coffee and nuts. Good imperial porter, but lacking a bit of depth.
3.7 2013-08-11. Black body with nice tan head. 4+ Nice aroma is fruity and moderately alcoholic. Flavour is mildly alcoholic, fruity dark malt, dry bitter roast in the finish lingers. Lightly leafy hop undertones in the finish. Smooth average plus bodied palate. Pretty decent. Bottle from LCBO, Toronto
3.6 Bottle @ Tre Små Rum, Gothenburg. Black with a small light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, coffee and a little liquorice. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and roasted rather bitter finish. Soft and smooth. 260713
3.4 Dark brown pour tan head mild lacing. Cholocalate with kick at end. All in all decent beer
3.1 Dark brown with thin tan head. Drinks easy, tastes similar to a guiness stout but lighter.
3.4 0.355 l bottle at Pikkulintu, Helsinki. Black color. Sweet roasty aroma with charred bread, salty licorice and raisins. Roasty, bready and licorice taste with dark fruits and hint of smoke. Medium to firm bitterness. Medium to full body. Good rich porter, although less licorice taste would be better.
2.8 Bomber bottle poured a clear cola-brown hue w/ a large rocky beige head minimal lacing. Moderate sweet aroma of brown sugar cookie and perfume hops. Initial flavor is a moderate sweet w/ a faint bitter finish. Tastes are cola, orange, caramel and a mild chocolate. Medium bodied, watery texture, soft carbonation, and a faint metallic feel in the finish.
3.4 Pours a very dark brown, with a thin tan head. Aroma of malt and chocolate. Taste is complex and rich. This porter is a good effort. Thumbs up.
1.9 Draught. I had this beer when it was being piloted at Federal Jacks on tap. It was lack luster back then and remained so in the bottle.
3.5 355 ml bottle. BBE D/12. Pikkulintu, Helsinki, Finland. Dark coffee brown colour with a small tan head. Roasted malt, hops, coffee, chocolate, vanilla and cocoa in the aroma. The flavour is roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, grassy hops and some bitterness. Bitterness and ashy notes in the aftertaste. Coffee is quite strong and it's disturbing me a bit. I'm not a coffee lover. Well, I've never tasted coffee but I can guess what it tastes like.
3.5 Pours an expected dark brown with a thin beige cap. The aroma is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, carboard, and then a strange note of yogurt. The flavour is an exact reflection of all that, including the odd yogurt note. Meh, doesn’t really do it for me.
3.5 Smak och doft av humle, malt, mörk choklad, kaffe och toner av lakrits Betydande kaffesmak, stor sötma med avslutande stor beska.
3.2 22oz bomber. Last style I haven’t tried! I definitely advise drinking this beer at the recommended temperature, 55F, it makes a big difference. Dark walnut color, no head, almost no lacing. Medium aroma, alcoholic, toasty, smells stronger than 7.1%. Taste matches, burnt and slightly alcoholic. I didn’t like it very much at first, but I ended up liking it OK. Not worth $11.
3.1 bottle. Pours dark black, large thick head. Aroma of chocolate malts, roast. Taste is sharp, hoppy, citrus? Thin mouthfeel. Decent beer, but I was expecting more.
3.8 Solid effort. Maybe a bit thin for a porter but that may just me. Not my favorite porter.
3.4 Bottled. Again, a solid effort that is starting to get me past the reluctance to purchase beer from this brewery. Love the english characteristic from the hops, a bit catty on the nose but the sweetness is slight caramel instead of overwhelming. The Warrior gives it a bit of citric flavor, which makes it finish somewhat dry and bitter.
3.9 Pours almost black with a thin, dark tan head. Aroma is cola, molasses, dark fruit, roast. Taste is lightly burned coffee and chocolate... Malty, highly carbonated. Slight hoppiness...increasing bitter as it goes.....very good.
3.4 22oz bottle. Very dark brown clear color (a full glass appears black). Big light borwn head. Decent lace. Stronger carbonation. Soft texture. Medium - plus body. Dry overall. Bittersweet taste - more bitter than sweet, though. Toasty malts, light chocolate. Prominent hop in this porter. Earthy, spicy hops. Light pine. Some coffee. Light dark fruit (red grape). Very mild burnt malt / ashy / smokey characteristic. Decent, interesting, unique porter, on the bigger side.
3.7 Pours black with a big frothy beige head. Well carbonated with a big hiss upon opening. Aroma is big roasted malts, some smoke. Taste is a dry roasted malt profile with a small hop bitterness, some smoke and mocha coffee finish this out.
4.1 From bottle. The aroma has a very dense, roasted malty smell along with an abundance of caramel and vanilla sweetness. The color is dark brown to black, with a clear body and tan head. Tastes very sweet with slight bitterness with a bit of smokiness. The bitterness and sweetness are very well balanced. Medium body with dry finish. Overall, a very well balanced and flavorful porter. Lots of flavor with a long aftertaste.
3.1 It pours a dark brown and gives the same color body in my nonic. A one inch foamy tan head appears and lasts about a good two minutes before slowly dieing. The smell has the coffee notes up front with light chocolate and tobacco ever so slightly in the background. The taste is sweet and bitter going between the chocolate o the coffee and the tobacco, weird, different to me. The palate is about a medium, and fairly watery. It is extremely drinkable. Overall, this is just a tad above decent, and I don’t think I’d come back to this.
3.4 It pours dark-brown (almost black and opaque). The head on my bottle performed a neat little trick, as it dissipated only the sides lowered, leaving a tower of head in the middle glass - it was neat. It was tan and very marshmallow-like. The aroma had notes of: sweet malts, rum, cocoa, and raisins. The taste is medium-light bitter that finishes with a very light sourness; there are notes of: cracker, sour dark-cherries, chocolate, and charcoal. The body is medium-light and slick, with medium carbonation, and a long finish. Overall, it was nice, but it felt more like a porter, rather than an imperial porter - lacked omph!
