Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin (Pugsley's Signature Series)

Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin (Pugsley's Signature Series)

"Pugsley’s Signature Series is named after Shipyard Brewing Company’s master brewer, Alan Pugsley.”

A big bodied beer with a light coppery orange color and pleasing aroma of pumpkin and nutmeg. Pale Ale, Wheat and Light Munich malts combine with the natural tannin in pumpkin and the delicate spiciness of Saphir and Hallertau Hops to balance the sweetness of the fruit. To fully experience all the flavors, this beer is best enjoyed at 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

3.1 Pours cloudy copper with medium off white head. Aroma has spices dominating. Spices dominate the ale underneath also in flavor, but malt eventually appears. Hop notes try to come in but battle the spices. Really over done spices with not much else going on.
5.0 So much yes. Great pumpkin beer. I would freeze it and skate on it and then melt it and drink it.
3.9 Pours a luminous copper with a fluffy white head that dissipates to a thin layer. Aromas of pumpkin, spice, toffee and a bit of fruit. Flavors are toffee, spice, fresh bread, pumpkin, and sweet fruit. Finishes with earthy hops. Lively mouthfeel with a peppery finish. Very nice.
5.0 Nice test on pumpkin not overpowering
3.3 22oz bottle and on tap at SLL tasting. Pours a deep bronze color with orange hues and a 1/2 inch white head. Smells of pumpkin and subtle spices. Taste is vegetal pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, light malts, and some alcohol on the finish. Feel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
2.5 Tap IPH. Pale. Sweet volatile barley wine aroma. Taste is not as strong as barley wine but its gitten there. Pumpk in the background. Not over the top in the spice arena. Fairly well balanced for the alky content. Civilized at times. Warming sensations down the gullet on the finish. Not bad for a higer alky beer.
3.0 Bottle from BevMo! in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is pumpkin liqueur, halloween punch, nutmeg, cinnamon. Taste is sweet and spiced...very artificial, thin and syrupy. Maybe some kind of latte syrup flavoring. Very disappointing.
3.9 Amber / orange pour. Aroma of malt with ginger, and a hint of pumpkin pie. This beer was like an old ale or imperial red ale or some such thing, but with notes of various pumpkin pie spices - allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg - that come through at different times. Some hop flavor, mild bitterness and alcohol warmth. For a pumpkin ale, this may be my favorite since it does not taste like an overly sweet piece of pumpkin pie. Very good.
3.6 Pours a clear golden amber. Aromas of all spice, nutmeg, a touch of pumpkin. Nice spicy taste with pumpkin notes.
3.7 Aroma is pumpkin, spices, fruit/floral and mild oxidation. The flavor is pumpkin/yams, fruit, medium sweetness, malts and a mix of slight tartness, sour, heat and acidity in the finish.
3.5 Bottle pours deep orange/amber with a frothy eggshell head. Aroma is sweet and spicy with notes of cinnamon, clove, toasted caramel, pumpkin, and gingerbread. Flavor displays baking spice, pumpkin flesh, carrot and definite alcohol presence. Overall body is moderate and the finish is somewhat boozy.
3.0 22oz bottle from the state store Pours clear amber with a small off-white head, no lacing. Aroma of pumpkin, spices and citrus. Taste of pumpkin, cloves, Bready and some alcohols A pretty good pumpkin beer
3.2 Bottle. Deep amber. Nose is caramel, grain, marshmallow, spice. Flavor is a bit raw and hot upfront - fruity esters in the back. Very strong alcohol notes in this bottle, but still pumpkin notes predominate.
3.0 Orange hue, murky visibility with mostly diminishing white fizzy head, no lacing. Orange hop, light fruit, nutmeg, dark malt and cologne aromas. Orange syrup taste up front with some pumpkin and spice with more of a light citrus hop finish.
3.6 Honey golden, moderate carbonation, medium body, slightly hazy. Tags of honey, pumpkin, small amount of nutmeg, long bitter finish that is slightly peppery.
4.7 Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. A clear golden amber color with a small white head. The aroma is full of pumpkin spice and alcohol. The flavor mirrors the aroma. Overall, an outstanding pumpkin ale.
3.5 9% ?!?! Duuuuuu never new that before I cracked this big bottle open. FUCK YOU LIVER I’M DRINKING!! Smell is good, and it gooder then most of the style. Taste is the goodest. Each sip keeps getting goodier then the last. Noticeable light fall spice, maybe a lemony hops, good bitter finish. Where is the 9%? Tell me!!!! Smooth and full feeling. Cream cheese?? Maybe cream cheese, yes cream cheese. I like this, it’s very pie like but in beer form.
3.9 On tap at noodle house, OB. Served with cinammon sugar on the head. Sweet, warming alcohol, spice. I was pleasantly surprised! A nice pumpkin ale.
3.2 22oz bottle poured into a snifter. The aroma is sweet; a blend of butterscotch and nutmeg with light vegetal undertones that turn to caramel apple candy as it warms up. The brilliant orange, oily beer has a white, sudsy head that exhibits mild retention and leaves light lace. The taste is a medium high sweet-forward beer with medium bitter backing notes. The thick, waxy texture has a foamy carbonation. The full body is initially warm with alcohol and sweet caramel. It finishes with nutmeg and another, more bitter and waxy spice quality. There’s butterscotch in the finish too, but this fades turning towards applesauce and root vegetables. The aftertaste has a mild potency and lingering spice character with caramel, nuts, and an alcohol dryness.
3.9 Rating #1258 27.09.2014. Bottle from CBI, 9% Clear copper-amber pour, that produces a bubbly foam. Aroma is potent, lots of nutmeg, cinnamon, hint of allspice. Taste is malty, lots of sweet and grainy notes, moderate alcohol warmth. Not a big pumpkin guy, but the balance here at 9% is fantastic.
4.1 Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin has a thick, frothy, orange-tinted cream-colored head, a hazy, bubbly, orange appearance, and even some decent lacing left on the glass. The aroma is of sharp, spicy, pumpkin pulp aroma, reminiscent of Pumpkin Head, with the spiced candle aspect. Taste is of those elements, with a bit of an odd pepper note (white pepper?). Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, and Smashed Pumpkin finishes between wet and dry. Not too boozy in the flavor, but one will feel it (my sample is a 12-oz. bottle). RJT
3.0 Dark clear Amber with an off-white head. Aroma of duh, pumpkin pie. Tastes boozy and heavy spice. Medium bodied and a little thick and oily with medium carbonation.
3.4 Bottles at the Oktoberfest at the Galaxy. Poured into small cup. Golden light brown with small head. Aroma is pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, bread dough, and slight booze. Taste is similar with a malty backbone, pumpkin, and then spice presence. Little boozy. Medium light body. Moderate carb.
2.8 Sampled from the bottle. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has is full of spice with sweet grains and a bit of pumpkin. Flavor has strong performance main spice with sweet grains and bread supporting.
3.3 Pours a finger of head on a hazy straw body. The aroma is pumpkin and peppers. Nice. The taste is balanced and smooth with hints of pumpkin. The texture is soft. Enjoyable.
3.4 How: 12 ounce bottle. Where: Old Line Fine Wine, Spirits, & Bistro. Appearance: Pours bright caramel orange body, healthy head of khaki. Aroma: Bready toasted malts and alcohol mostly. Taste: Candied pumpkin with spices added. Palate: Moderate filling body and tipping towards the heavier side. Overall: I actually liked it, I know people hate on pumpkin but it’s good.
3.4 Bottle. Cloudy, light orange with a medium head. Aroma is a pumpkin spice with strong hints of honey. Taste is sweet up front, almost a honey taste in the middle and a well balanced finish. Just a tad cloying.
3.3 strong sweet pumpkin spice aroma. dark golden and clear in color with good head. very nice pumpkin pie flavor, slightly malty, faint hop bittnerness at finish.
3.3 Bottle. Slightly cloudy golden orange pour with a thin white head. A surprisingly intense pumpkin beer, flavour is stronger than the aroma, lots of pumpkin notes with some sweet caramel, subtle spice and slightly vegetal. Nice.
2.8 Appearance: Clear brown, some white head. Aroma: Pumpkin, spices, cinnamon, sweet? Taste: Pumpkin, spices, cinnamon. Alcohol. Wow, overpowering. Bought: Total Wine (Sterling), 355 ml, $3.79 Info: 14/9-2015, 90/300M, BB: 31/1-2016
