Shipyard XXXX IPA (Pugsley's Signature Series)

"Pugsley’s Signature Series is named after Shipyard Brewing Company’s master brewer, Alan Pugsley.”

XXXX IPA is a non-traditional American IPA with a brilliant copper color and the classic citrus nose of Cascade Hops. This beer demonstrates a unique balance between malt-inspired, delicate, red grapefruit sweetness and lingering hop dryness. 4.0 0.33 l bottle from Pivoteka Zagreb. Pours hazy amber with a small frothy off white head. Syrup and malts aroma, along with fruity hops, dried fruits. More like a Belgian ale :) Light bitter start, medium body, drinkable. Suddenly, earthy hoppy aroma. Some licorice or candy, maybe even bubblegum. Warm sweet hoppy finish, light lingering bitterness. Very interesting.
3.7 Rating #1255 - Bottle from Shipyard IPA mixer. 25.09.2014 Pours a hazy copper with a fairly frothy head. sticky lacing. Aroma is mild orange, lemon, grapefruit, mild floral aroma.Taste is mild sweetness (citrusy, piney, floral) and a lingering bitterness - cookie dough, caramel malt character really brought out. Super dry finish.
3.6 22 bomber to tulip. Pours dark amber red, beige foamy head. Aroma of raisin, brown sugar, dark fruits, and deep malt blend. Taste of same. Good malt backbone. Hop character is fruity, juicy with a little spice. Very complex beverage. Finish is with slight boozy heat, but lighter than 9.2 abv would suggest. I get spoiled with WC IPAs. This English style is more like an imperial red to me.
3.5 625ml bottle from the LCBO in Toronto, Ontario. Hazy amber in colour with a long lasting small tan coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is of fruity hops, some light pine, light alcohol, caramel malts. The flavour is sweet, good citrus hop bite, soapy, caramel malt. Warming hoppy mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, with alcohol and some spice. Pretty good, not like other DIPA’s I’ve had. Fairly tame in that sense.
2.9 hot nose with a heavy alcohol aroma, light pine notes, not citrus. Pours a dark ruby amber with a thick off white head. Minimal lacing. The first sip is not what I expected. No discerning profile but a strong alcohol presence, heavy caramel malts, moderate bitterness. Off!
3.2 Bottle. Copper pour with a big white head. Sweat, caramel, pine, citrus. No so pleasant aroma. Medium body. Sweet body. Not impressed.
1.5 Holy shit this is an abomination of a beer. Sticky bitter malt juice. Tylenol. Sickly sweet. Tastes like a 10 year old recipe. Jesus fuck no.
3.7 Bottle. Amber body with large lasting tan head. Aroma is malts, caramel some hints of fruits and pines. Taste is malts with some honey and caramel. Aftertaste is malty sweetness nicely balanced by some hops bitterness. Nice one but it has more of a barly wine.
3.6 Bottle to shaker glass, pours clear amber. Two finger off white head, some lacing and retention. Aroma of caramel and faint whiskey. Taste is really earthy bitter and malty sweet, a little too sweet for the style. Medium bodied, lively carbonation, sticky mouth feel. Finishes bittersweet. Tasting notes of Belgian sugar, caramel, dates, pine resin, alcohol. This drinks almost like a barley wine that’s over hopped. Not bad beer just another curve ball from Shipyard.
3.6 Bottle 355 ml, a copper amber beer with good head. Nose is on toasted malt, hop resin, almond, floral. Aroma is on caramel, sugar, almond, biscuit, vanilla, sweet, berries, complex, good bitterness and body, quince.
2.3 Dark orange to copper colour, medium carbonation, thin head which gone in 10-15 sec. Aroma of nothing specific, presence of alcohol tough and unpleasent. Flavor for an DIPA is very bad. Alcohol, alcohol an nothing else. Afteertaste is bitter but harsh bitter. Not a good stuff I’m afraid.
3.7 Bottle, 355 ml at O’hara, Zagreb. shared with JFK10000. Pours dark orange, off white head. Hoppy aroma and flavor. Caramel, spicy note, fruity. Bitter finish.
2.8 Keg at Spacebar, 4/6/15. Clear golden, thin fizzy off-white head, poor retention. Aroma of floral and mild piney hops. The taste is resin, melon hops, pale malt. Medium bodied, mild lingering bitterness.
3.9 Hazy to cloudy brown color, small white head which disappeared quickly. Biscuity aroma, a bit boozy. Taste is pleasantly hoppy, medium sweet and medium to heavy bitter. Medium to full body, soft carbonation. Boozy yet refreshing.
4.3 Surprised by the "low" ratings on this one. Glad I finally tried it. Pour is clear, golden-amber with thin, clingy top. Aroma is other-worldly, one of the most fantastic smells I’ve encountered - bready malt with wild berry and citrus. I spent most of my time with this thing with my nose in the glass! Flavor has malty start, a nice bitter bite in the middle, finishing pretty clean with a nice semi-sweet linger. Good stuff, this!
3.7 12 oz bottle. Tasted on 4/29/15. Bottle from The Cellar Norman, OK. A pretty decent double IPA. Nice bitterness to it with some e grapefruit & slight darkness. Not too bad.
3.3 Draft at the Green Growler. Average looking pour. The rich, sweet aroma is the star of this show. Unfortunately the flavor lags behind - dry with dashes of grapefruit, pine, & yeast. A solid brew but not a first rate imperial.
3.2 Beige, frothy head, not very persistent. Amber, fairly cloudy. Fairly intense and persistent at nose. Honey, caramel , raisin, resinous, citrus, a hint of chocolate, Average carbonation. Taste of roasted malt, chocolate. Warming sensation but not heavy sensation of alcohol.
4.2 One glance at the bottle and....I am not sure really, it looks classy and greasy all at the same time. What lurks inside is a fantastic brewski, why it isn’t rated higher for style I am not sure? Is the SRM off? Is it too sweet? Whatever, style bitchiness aside this is a pretty fuckin’ tight ale. Barreling off of a dark copper body come audacious aromas of peach, tangerine, sweet grapefruit, pineapple, honey and some wee vinous hints. T’is a big, bold fruity IPA , headed up by off-white foam. It is pretty much on the sweet side but enough grapefruit zing saunters in late, managing to hold this tropical train on it’s tracks. With a full mouthfeel and a fine lingering lusciousness consisting of sweet and citrus fruit, this booze-hiding big’gun is very much a tasty pour.
3.3 Bottled 355ml. -at O’Hara Zagreb. Clear amber coloured, small off-white head, caramel and alcohol in the nose. Moderate sweet malty, caramel, dried fruits, hops and alcohol with pretty short and weak finish for nearly 10%ABV.
3.8 Amber body. Not super bitter has a nice sweet malty Belgian candy element as well. On tap at bb winnipeg.
3.6 Bottle at O’Hara Zagreb, with Ribafish (huge thanks Marin & co!). Poured a darker amber body with an off white head that went away relatively fast. Sweet earthy, more malty than hoppy aroma, ok. Though I feared that would mean a sugar bomb, the taste disproved me quickly - lemongras-forward hop, on dry maltiness - slightly figgy, caramelly, which is overrun by a good bitterness. Quite tasty beer, I like it!
3.8 This is a really nice iipa. Pours an amber color with white head. Aromas are quite malty. Bread, sweet yeast. Nice sweet malts up front with a hoppy finish. Not crazy complex .. But a very approachable double IPA. Alcohol is very well hidden
3.3 Tap. Pours clear deep amber, medium creamy beige head, lung lasting, great lacing. Aroma is a bit butter, grapefruit, caramel, pine. Flavor has butter as well, medium sweet and medium bitter, pine, some citrus. Full body, creamy.
4.3 pours a light red or amber with thin tan head. strong floral aromas. taste is strong citrus - some orange which shifts more to light grapefruit in the finish. Some alcohol is evident, but, for the most part, very well balanced for its strength. If the IBUs were a bit more subdued, this would be a surprisingly easy-drinking high gravity beer.
3.8 This is an extremely drinkable beer for it’s strength. Pours a beautiful hazy copper/amber with a foamy off-white head. Aromas of grapefruit, citrus, some pine/cedar, and caramel. It’s full bodied with a medium carbonation, goes down quite smooth. There is a nice malt sweetness balanced by some lingering bitterness from the hops. Very balanced for an IPA of this proportion. Booze flavor is present, but not overpowering. Definitely a heavy hitter.
3.8 355ml bottle. Pours clear amber with two fingers of creamy beige head. Aroma is sweet malts, caramel, citrus, sweet and candied fruits. Taste is similar with the sweetness well balanced by a good final vegetal hoppy bitter dry finish. Hops probably a bit muted by the time. Excellent drinkability for a 9+ ABV beer. Medium to full body, medium carbonation. Very good.
3.9 65 cl bottle bb 12/2014, 9.25%, 70 IBU, 5€. Dark copper color, hazed, big expanding creamy offwhite/beige head. Strong IPA smell on the nose. Aroma is a load of caramel malts and huge amounts of american hops. Some fruity ester, grapefruit, rose, orange zest, red wine. Taste is sweetish ending up in a tight bitterness. Rock solid aromatic IPA, the 9.25% is very well hidden, while the 70 IBU is biting. Full body, soft carbonation, medium-long finish. Very good IPA.
3.9 Bottle. Gorgeous copper pour with a short tan head. Citrus and caramel with floral hops in the aroma. Taste is earthy and floral hops, spicy hops, citrus, big caramel, chewy malt and toasted grains. Body is medium-full with a chewy body and dense, creamy carbonation. Finishes with more earthy and floral hops, soft citrus, chewy caramel, toasted bread and sweet malt.
4.2 Aromas of soft caramel, citrus and piney hops. Hazy orange, mostly lasting white head. Malt sweetness upfront, well balanced. Medium bodied.
