3.2 Bottle from Shock Top Winter variety pack. Pours an opaque dark brown with a tan head that quickly fades into a thin layer. No lacing to be had along the glass. Aroma has some roasted chocolate notes with a good bit of cocoa powder. Flavor is slightly sweet, but not as sweet as I expected. The semi-artificial taste reminds me a bit of chocolate Tootsie Pops.
2.9 bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY ---Opaque very dark brown, full beige head, lace that slides back into the drink. Taste is malt that has strong overtones of dark chocolate and vanilla. Because the sweet doesn’t overwhelm, this actually works as a novelty (and only one-at-a-time) brew. Very light bittering is all that is needed at the end.
1.6 355ml twist off. Brown pour, artificial flavor of cocoa puffs, tastes like chocolate soda.
3.8 I picked up a can of Shock Top Shockolate Wheat on a whim since it was only a buck. I didn’t expect it to be that good, not just because of the brand but because it’s six months old and low in alcohol. How well could it have held up? Well, I’m pleasantly delighted by the quality of this beer considering everything it had going against it. Dare say I’d actually recommend it. I poured a 16oz can into a weizen glass. It was canned on 10/10/14 and cost $1 ($0.06 per ounce). Appearance: Opaque black in color, some carbonation is visible as it’s poured. A light brown, talk, foamy head at first but it mostly dissipates and leaves no real lacing. Smell: Surprisingly potent aroma of chocolate and vanilla. Taste: The description of this beer is quite interesting as it claims to be “Belgian style wheat” aged on cocoa and vanilla beans. It really doesn’t have any Belgian character to it at all, though. Perhaps “Belgian style” refers to the recipe but not the yeast strain – there are no esters here at all. This is much closer to a traditional porter with the addition of chocolate and vanilla. The wheat doesn’t do much for the palette or mouthfeel except to add some dryness on the finish. I’d assume the use of wheat in the grain bill is fairly low since it doesn’t do much for head retention, either. Still, the chocolate taste is pretty authentic and it’s sweet but not cloying. I get a bit of a cola flavor on the back end as well. Not a very complex brew, but a surprisingly tasty one. Drinkability: Say what you want about the Shock Top line, but damn if they aren’t quaffable brews. This no exception as the mouthfeel is smooth and velvety, but without the viciousness of a stout or porter. Smooth going down with a nearly clean aftertaste. It’s amazing that at only 4.3% ABV Shockolate Wheat was able to stay fresh for so long. This is a great introductory chocolate beer for its target audience.
3.4 Delicate chocolate flavor. I’ve never seen this combination before. Better than I expected.
3.3 Pours very dark brown with some orange highlights in the light. Fizzy, disappearing tan head. The aroma is very sweet and full with vanilla. Minor notes of chocolate and toast. The flavor has more massive vanilla sweetness, cola, cocoa and hints of roasted malt in the finish. The flavors are pretty nice, but it’s pretty cloyingly sweet. Can’t really give it a pass on that especially since it has such a thin body. Not really bad though.
3.2 Bottle shared by a friend. Clear brown pour with a thick tan head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, roast and slight banana. Chocolate and malt flavor with creamy wheat and caramel accents before a sweet finish.
2.0 Poured from 12oz bottle into tulip. Very thin frothy head. Aroma is sweet, resembles hot cocoa powder. Color is dark, almost black. Taste is sweet and smooth. Notes of cocoa and vanilla. Palate is light bodied with a thin texture and soft carbonation. Smooth finish. Overall drinkable beer but plenty of far better option are available.
0.6 Incredibly fake tasting, and unbelievably cloying. Thick syrupy mouth feel and super soft carb. No bitterness, nasty fake cocoa finish. Gross.
1.6 Can. Black body with a light brow colored head. A light nose of cheap milk chocolate and almonds. This tasted very sweet with brown pancake syrup and milk chocolate candy. There was also some nutty note, but the sweetness is dominant. Just absolutely cloying. Yuck.
3.0 Aroma is cocoa, vanilla, caramel, chocolate and light roastiness. Taste is chocolate, vanilla, caramel and sweet grains. Finishes slightly watered down. Appearance is black with a thin beige head that retains poorly.
2.5 It really tastes like chocolate wheat but I'm not a big fan of these types I would say that it is recommended for people who love this palate
3.2 12oz into a pint. Pours an direct match of a coca cola, minus the extra bubbles. Head is adequate at first, then fizzles to nothing fast, no lacing. Aroma of dry bakers chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, thin hop structure. Taste of light chocolate and a vanilla mixture, some faint almond. Creamy dark malt character. Yet, brew remains flat the whole time, a lot like a flat soda. Cocoa aftertaste, soft on the pallate. Not horrible, a dark sessionable underling. Too bad its a macro, or step child of. Price is right.
3.5 cloudy dark brown to black. 1 finger head from a can to stemware. aroma is chocolate and coffee peaches. holy crap. I actually like this one. Creamy like very creamy. coats the entire mouth. lots of chocolate, espresso, i like the finish. this is good.
2.8 Thanks to Peter for this. Pours black with a small off white top. Aroma is mocha with big chocolate sweetness. Taste is light mocha and vanilla with sweet chocolate and light roast. Not bad but very one dimensional.
3.5 Very nice and quite drinkable. With chocolate tastes and also wheat. Nice aroma and thickness although not too much.
3.0 Bottle. Dark with tan head. Smells of watery chocolate. Taste features a decent amount of chocolate, some toasted malt, and a hint of spice. Very light and quaffable. Honestly better than I was expecting but nothing outstanding.
3.3 From Notes.... Smell of wheat and chocolate. Has a slight sweet choctale taste.
3.4 Can poured onto a pint glass. Dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma of chocolate is strongly present in the taste along with marshmallow. The sweet taste has a lasting finish.
2.8 12oz bottle from Wegmans, West Seneca, NY. A deep mahogany colour with a fast fading tan head; milk chocolate aroma; smooth grainy texture with a chocolate milkshake taste; and a creamy finish with some lingering vanilla that cuts through the sweetness. Rather one-dimensional, but actually pleasant to drink.
3.0 Bottle. Tastes like sweet chocolate, musky grains, roasted malt, and marshmallow. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like chocolate, marshmallow, and roasted malt.
3.6 Tons of aroma and flavor for 4.3% ABV! Dark brown color. Chocolate and vanilla flavors. This is a craft, not mass market, brew!
3.6 pours dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is malt and cocoa. Taste is sweet cold hot chocolate. Sweet chocolate and vanilla linger. Really a pretty good beer!
3.0 12 oz bottle pours. Cocoa, vanilla, caramel, bread and other random flavors. Not too bad.
3.2 A dark brown appearance with a beige head. The aroma contains milk chocolate and vanilla. The flavor is dominated by chocolate with some cola like flavor in there also. The aftertaste is sweet and slightly bitter. Overall its one dimensional for sure. You struggle to get anything but chocolate out of this but hey its not bad at all.
2.8 The aroma is like chocolate milk with macro malt/wheat underneath. The appearance is brown. The taste is like the aroma. The palate is average. Overall OK for a seasonal.
3.5 Pours an opaque black with quickly fading brown head and slight ring of lace. Aroma is milk chocolate or cold cocoa. Seems a little artificial, but with how sweet this is, it’s not hard to like it. Taste is similar, with an easy-going, low-quality chocolate feel to it. Little malt background, ending in a malty chocolate taste with a slight hint of roast in the aftertaste. Not complex by any means, palate is thin, taste is gentle and fleeting. That said, it exceeded my expectations, stays laid back, is drinkable with nothing offensive. Not that bad, really.
3.5 Pours an opaque, super dark brown almost black with a healthy tan head that slowly disappears. Chocolate, almost stout like aroma. Wonderful flavors of chocolate, very light roast, grape? and cheerwine cola. Very soda like with hints of sweet stout flavors.
2.6 Bottle - unable to pour out of bottle to look at, VERY chocolatey aroma and flavor, almost too much for me, and not the high quality chocolate, malty backbone, mildly velvety finish - OK for what it is I guess, but there are much better chocolate beers out there
3.0 12oz screwtop bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Big vanilla aroma. Tastes more like soda than beer, maybe a Yoohoo for example. It’s actually not that bad but I do prefer beer to soda so probably will not be drinking any more of these. Plus I see on the label there are artificial flavors added to which I say, screw that.
