Short's Bellaire Brown

Short's Bellaire Brown

The hub of the village

Bellaire Brown is a full-flavored brown ale that derives sweet caramel and toasted qualities from four different kinds of malt and specialty grains. Select hop varieties create an enticing aroma and dry finish. Bellaire Brown is very dark and rich, which makes it hard to classify as a brown, but it is certainly considered a delicious masterpiece.

Bellaire Brown was originally created to appeal to people who enjoyed drinking coffee, and to beer drinkers who are not interested in hoppy options. When Joe Short was creating the Bellaire Brown recipe, he desired a beer that was meatier and burlier than most browns. Bellaire Brown is a great gate-way beer for drinkers to be introduced to darker beer varieties.

3.3 Nice brown ale. Malty and sweet, with a hint of smokiness. Could use slightly more bitterness and head is weak, but still a good beer.
2.0 330ml bottle (Grand Bus Tasting 2017). Clear brown color. Small size, off-white head, stays. Sweet, candy, husky and some roast in aroma. Husky, grainy, candy in taste. Fizzy carbonation. Dirty and yeasty in aftertaste. Why? Nope.
3.1 RBESG 2017 Bus Ride part 2, Latvia. Pours hazy brown. Aroma and taste, chocolate, sweetish, light roast. Medium body. OK brown ale.

3.0 6 3 6 3 12 Bottle shared. Aroma of dark malts, overripe dark fruits, rye and bread. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.5 RB says this is my US rating #3333. Bottle. Nose chocolate, bit of crystal, malty, touch nutty. Pour light brown, cloudy-opaque with a few tawny hints, head sudsy beige. Lightly crisp, very heavy body, bitterness medium but not intense at ll, semi-sweet and malty, lots of good brown malt and shades of roast, nuttiness, but no scorch or darker / harsher roasts. Heavy with obvious kick behind it (though alcohol extremely well integrated, as seems to be the general case with Short’s), mild fruitiness that I have to look for at times, and malt that’s occasionally flabby but usually deep. Bright, fresh, and somewhat unusual. Meaty indeed! [2017.06.23: 3.5]
2.9 Medium but watery roasted malt smell...Exactly that on taste except a bit more mouthfeel than I thought it would have...light complexity of malt...No hops...So much like all the other beers I’ve had on this trip so far...At landfill course in Wisconsin!
3.4 12 oz. bottle at Queen City Radio. Pours a slightly browned amber, translucent, with a small off-white head that settles into a lasting ring. The first thing I noticed was a decent earthy hop presence here to go along with caramel, toasty, chocolaty, and slightly nutty malts. Light-bodied, with moderate to medium carbonation and a malty, earthy mouthfeel. Good brown ale.
3.5 A hazy, reddish-brown pour with an off-white head. It has a sugary sweet bread and caramel aroma. The medium body has somewhat sticky texture and average carbonation. The taste is sweet with a smooth finish.
3.4 Chestnut brown pour with aroma of nuts, caramel, and toasted malt.Toasted malt flavor with nuts, coffee, and hint of caramel sweetness. Good beer.
3.1 Aroma isn’t bad pretty much traditional brown ale. Flavor is more basic. Mostly medium dark malt and a hint of traditional brown ale characteristics and sweet.
3.3 Let syrlig, meget chokolade i smagen. Dejlig frisk i det, sammen med den lidt mere fyldige brown ale stil, er en rigtig fin blanding. Skulle der være noget negativt, så må det være at det syrlige er lidt for fremtrædende.
3.0 Draft. Pours dark brown with tan head that dissipates quickly; some lacing. Nose of bready malt, chocolate malt, and some caramel notes. Chocolate malt with caramel notes upfront. Some bitterness in the finish. Chocolatier than other brown ales.
3.4 Can shared by Kyle at Final Gravity. Pours medium brown with a decent beige head and a roasted chocolate aroma. There is a medium-bodied roasted malt flavor with a dry slightly bitter finish.
3.3 Clear mahogany, light tan head. Molasses, vanilla. Allspice. Lightly bitter, quite a lot of malt sweetness. Light body, creamy. Long finish. Good.
3.5 Donker bruin met een crème kraag. Toffee met caramel en walnoten beetje cacao oo de achtergrond. Niet verkeerd
3.5 Tap, at the brewpub, Bellaire, MI. Deep brown. Chocolate aroma. Roasted coffee flavour. Sharp finish.
4.1 Aroma is very nutty malts, toffee and slight sweetness. The flavor is nutty malts, toffee, light berries/fruit and a slightly sweet/tart finish. Old school brown ale, well-made.
3.5 Draft - pours brown tan head - nose/taste of caramel, toffee and dark walnut - medium body
3.6 Pours a dark cola brown with a thin white ring. Light carbonation with some lacing. Pleasant roasted nut and malts aroma. Thin to medium body. Nice roasted nut taste. Flavors aren’t very bold. Smooth finish with some lingering aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable but not great.
3.4 Draft - Dark malts, touch of toast and nuts. Deep brown with a decent beige head. Toasty, malty and a bit nutty. Solid brown.
3.6 bottle @ Chief Market / Lima OH --- Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Opaque brown / black color, tan head that quickly shrinks to the rim, star field of lace. Taste is edgy roasted malt that uses black coffee for most of the bittering. As the description says - meaty and burly. But, somehow, it stays light and refreshing. Nicely balanced and complex. I’d could buy it again.
3.8 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/17/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, nuttiness, light chocolate/cocoa, light berry/fruits, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, nuttiness, light chocolate/cocoa, light berry/fruits, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, nuttiness, light chocolate/cocoa. and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and slightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good English brown ale style. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
3.1 Draft at Churchkey. Clear amber brown color, beige head. Aroma of toasted brownie with light coconut. Taste is cocoa, coconut, light body.
3.6 Draft pour into a pint glass. The beer is a clear brown with a beige head of foam. The aroma has nutty and oaty notes. Mild toffee. Pretty oaty in the taste. Medium body and higher carbonation than expected.
3.6 Pours a slightly hazy brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malt. Taste is sweet caramel, buttered biscuits, maple syrup and very milt hops. Good effort!
3.3 Dark brown color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, caramel, & some chocolate; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, caramel/molasses, hops, some dark fruit, and nuts; Dry finish; Decent brown ale.
3.5 12oz bottle tasted on the 03/05/2016. Dark brown cola color with medium white foamy head. Aroma of caramel, honey and nuts. Taste of nuts, caramel, roasted malts, brown sugar and some licorice. Aftertaste is dry and lightly sweet. Next one please!
