Short's Huma Lupa Licious

Short's Huma Lupa Licious

Imperial IPA

A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth
Huma Lupa Licious’ name derives from the hop plant, Humulus lupulus. It is Short’s best-selling India Pale Ale. Huma Lupa Licious is brewed with five different hop varieties, providing a punch to the palate. Between the beer’s abundance of hops, and the type of hops used in its creation, it has a delicious bitter taste and enticing citrus aroma. The hearty malt bill melds well with the hops for a perfect balance.

Huma Lupa Licious is the product of Joe Short wanting to create the ultimate IPA experience. Originally, Huma Lupa Licious was named Humulus Lupulus Maximus, and went through several recipe changes before settling on the recipe we know and love today.

Hops: Colombus, Chinook, Centennial, Palisade, Cascade

3.9 12 oz can pours a hazy golden-orange with creamy white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is full of caramel malts, pine, floral hops, and light citrus. Taste is bitter at first and in the finish, but the big malty sweetness in the middle is what I'll remember most about this one. Body is medium with average carbonation and a mouthfeel that is both creamy and sticky. This is a very solid IPA, bordering on IIPA, which I will gladly try again.
3.6 Bottle from De Bierkoning, almost 3 months after bottling. Deep golden color with a light veil. Big rocky off white head with good retention. Aroma's: herbal hops with a malty backbone, light fruit. Retronasal: (dark) malty, fruity, herbal/leafy hops. Flavor is moderate bitter with light malty sweetness. Light medium bodied. Finishes slightly dry, moderate bitter.
3.3 355ml Flasche. Orangefarben mit Trübung und kleiner Schaumkrone. Hopfig. Feinherb im Geschmack mit ordentlichem Körper. Etwas trocken im Abgang.
4.0 Found at Champp’s pours Golden with a small head and a piney resinous taste.
3.2 Bottle split with Bob at his house earlier this evening. Pours orange with a small off-white head. Flavor is resin, pine, orange peel, a little dirty. Fine, but not out-of-this-world good.
3.6 12 oz single bottle from Whole Foods Market - Indianapolis (on 86th). Golden colored appearance with slight haze and a fluffy white head. Aroma of zesty hops, citrus fruit and lightly toasted malt. Similar flavor, adding moderate hop bitterness and a mild malty sweetness. Medium body with a pleasant feel and a lingering finish. Solid.
4.7 Shorts has developed one of the most unique, and mass produced IPA’s out there. May not be the beer for most, but perfect for in my opinion.
3.1 Tap at Kumas. Hazy orange with a lasting white head. Nectarines, under ripe pineapple, pine and slight caramel. Mild sweetness immediately overcome with an intense bitter citrus pine taste almost medicinal. Medium body with a foamy feel.
3.5 Pretty good. Very hop heavy, citrus with some pine. Medium-full bodied. Not my first choice but very good.
3.5 Pours hazy golden with low white head. Aroma of pine, tropical fruit, citrus. Taste is super pine bitter, light fruit notes. Body is light and smooth with soft carbonation.
3.2 Bottle. Nose grapefruit and light grass, dough; pour an opaque orange-golden with a large and dense beige head. Taste strongly bitter but not extreme, clean and not too rubbery, rather dry, not tart, getting subtle orange peel and rind, light grapefruit, strong dough, very strong pine, some spice and earth. Full body but not fat, smooth and just crisp enough. Strong caramel dull and a little flabby. A little heavy for this hot day, well thought-out, just doesn’t have the brightness it needs. [2017.06.25: 3.2]
3.5 On tap at HopCat (Grand Rapids, MI). Aromas of nutty grain, peanut, grassy. Clear orange with a fairly lasting white head. Dry, malty, earthy hops, orange peel bitterness. Mesium bodied.
4.6 Exceptional IPA on draft at Yard House in King of Prussia. This delicious beer poured a golden color with a thick white head. The hops were crisp, bitter, spicy and dry. The mouthfeel and body of flavors were outstanding. There was a bready backbone that balanced the beer really nicely. The finish was delicious. I could drink this one all day!
4.0 Pours misty, deep orange. Full finger white cap, recedes slowly and leaves a nice, dense lacing. Nice fresh leafy hops on the aroma, some caramel-biscuity malts, even faint chocolate (?!), grapefruit, faint apricot, pine resin. Taste has candied grapefruit peel, some orange pulp, with a nice gulp of caramel maltiness in the middle, and then just truckloads of deep resiny hops, packing a really solid bitterness and quite some earthiness, too. Faint pineapple. Hints of chewing tobacco, spicy weed, kiwi seed. Aftertaste has a lot of lingering bitter hops, but its not unpleasant. Each new sip brings back a nice citrusy juiciness. Mild, smooth body, carbonation prickles just for a bit. A solid, albeit pretty straight-forward resiny IPA. A nice break from oniony-tropical hop juices.
3.7 Pours a slightly hazy golden orange on tap with fluffy off-white head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of resinous piney citrus hops over a mild caramel and biscuit malt base. Taste has some floral aspects on top of the pine and citrus, but more malt balanced and slightly oxidized. Moderate to heavy bitterness, dry finish, not bad.
3.3 Pours a cloudy, amber color with an off-white head. Aroma is floral hops with caramel malts and a hint of alcohol. Flavor had some toastyness along with the floral hops and caramel malts.
3.9 Clear golden color with off-white head. Aroma has some toasted malt and classic, resiny hops. Some bittersweet orange peel in the back. Taste starts bitter up-front with nice orange peel flavor, pine resin and earthy hops. Bitterness is quite intense but doesn’t really feel harsh. Medium body with smooth mouthfeel. A classic style of IPA but executed really well.
3.3 Pours a bright, hazy orange with a full, smooth white head. The aroma gives us a heavier impressions of pine, along with caramel, grassy hops, grapefruit, and resin. The taste has a good bitter kick, though it is a little sweeter than what I was hoping. The main impressions include grapefruit, pine, and sugar, while the minor notes are pineapple, orange, and caramel. A weaker though lingering aftertaste is a sugary grapefruit. Medium in body, with a thicker texture, and average in carbonation. I knocked this one down a bit for the reason that its very sweet.
3.0 Bottle. Orange tinted gold, lasting white head. Vegetal, bitter citrus, thin malts, medicinal finish. I’m not feeling the hype behind this beer.
3.9 Decent IPA. Pours a beautiful slightly orange haze. Pungent pine on the nose, hits your mouth with citrus hop, then into a lingering grapefruity alcohol on the finish. Not bad at all my friends
3.3 Orange pour with a light head. This IPA leans toward the mellow end of the spectrum. Pretty strong, lingering bitterness on the palate. Some nugget perhaps. Fruit salad, orange peel, a little honey. Light aroma for the style.
3.7 This is one of my favorite smelling IPA’s, the hops and citrus are so enticing and it looks good. A 12oz bottle would be perfect because the hop backwards bitterness is a bit overpowering. It’s different than other IPA’s, which is cool, but it’s a bit too odd.
3.7 pours a hazy orange gold with a medium white head. Big aroma of grapefruit citrus and sweet floral. Hop bitter from the start. full oily mouth feel. Taste some of the grapefruit coming in with a muted but definite malt presence. Long bitter linger. Right in my hophead wheelhouse. Good beer!
4.1 Bottle. Giant. Caramel, malt, hop, floral, spice and citrus candy. Some vanilla as well. Heavy heat from the bite, floral and earth hops contrast the powerful juicy nuggets. Well balanced spice and a woody finish. Great stuff.
3.8 Poured orange/gold with thin, foamy head. Floral aroma, with a hint of grass. Taste is grass, grapefruit. Lasting bitter finish.
3.5 Hazy orange pour, thin white head. Aroma of hops. Flavor is sweet, hoppy. Not the best finish. Some lingering malts. A little alcohol.
3.4 Bottle. Grapefruit citrus hop aroma with biscuity malt and pine resiny hop notes. Pours cloudy golden colored with a large, soapy off white head that has excellent retention and some lacing. Starts with biscuity malt flavors as well as grapefruity hop citrus and acidity. Finishes dry and very bitter pine resin hoppiness that coats the palate. Pretty good IPA, but very bitter on the finish.
1.5 Bot & boy do I wish I could tell the minute differences between IPA hops. All I feel is the overwhelming bitterness everytime I drink a good one. So powerful, so thick, so mouthcoating, so terribly on style. Think pine tar mixed with a combination of fruity turpentine, hand soap and then chewing on way too green bitter grapefruit rinds. Somewhat mildly volatile aroma. Probably treads into the IIPA imperial category.
3.6 Lightly cloudy orange gold, ample tan head. Strong pine resin, acerbic grapefruit, strong biscuity and honey malt backbone. Strong bitterness, not too much sweetness. Lightly oily, medium body, fair bit of carbonation. Good.
3.0 Pours a hazy straw color with a thick frothy white head. Aroma of older citrus, caramel malt, and finishing with rotted lemons. Taste bitter lemon, orange, and
