Short's Über Goober Oatmeal Stout

Short's Über Goober Oatmeal Stout

Uber Goober is a highly coveted Oatmeal Stout that has the largest grain bill in the entire Short’s beer portfolio. Uber Goober has roughly a handful of peanuts in every glass, which creates the rich aromas of chocolate nuttiness. Creamy oatmeal, fused with peanut puree in this beer, coincides perfectly with the caramel and roasted grain flavors of the malt.

3.0 Bottle. Poured a black color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly diminished with fair lacing. Moderate toasted chocolate aroma. Medium sweet chocolate flavor with a medium sweet finish of moderate duration. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a soft sweet beer.
2.4 bottle at papsø. pitch dark, small offwhite head. roasted malts, dry, flavor is roasted malty, spicy, herbal..
2.7 03-JUN-2012, bottle @Papsø tasting. Dark brown with very low tan head. Dusty unclean malty nose. Tart, fruity, brett’y, unclean - infected. Chemical. No peanut here, mostly infection. Tastes OK, though. But very strange.
1.9 Bottled. A pitch black a thin brown head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, malt, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of peanuts, roasted malt, and earth, leading to a dry finish. Not good.
3.1 12 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown to pitch black with a small tan to brown head. Aroma is roasted malty and light peanutty. Light chemical and citric. Wineous, paint and chemical. Citric and dry malty.
3.2 Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours an opaque black with a small, dissipating beige head. Very odd but interesting aroma, peanut not so much as overripe raisins. Medium body, very rustic tart raisins and a litlte wood. Again I don’t pick up any peanut whatsoever - more tart cherries. No real bitterness. An interesting infection this time from Shorts! 030612
2.2 Originally reviewed: 2/15/11. Poured into a pint glass. I’m a little hesitant with this one. The Short’s beers I’ve had have been hit or miss. The last one, PB & J, was an infected, vinegary mess. It didn’t even warrant a review. So I’m crossing my fingers on this one. The pour doesn’t conjure up any confidence on my end. A deep dark black, but not even the slightest bit of head or lace. Nothing. This could be motor oil for all I know. The nose is eerily similar to the last peanut butter beer of theirs I tried, and we know how that turned out. Mild cocoa, jam, and PB. There’s a definitive tart presence that is a little off-putting. The body is moderately thick with carbonation spritzing it up midway through, then smooths out on the finish. Mild cocoa, coffee char, and the faintest of nuttiness. Sourness is ever-present. Eh. I don’t like this. Maybe I’m a little gun-shy with these guys now, but this could have been so much better. Out she goes. Won’t have this again.
3.8 Michigan Winter Beer Festival. This beer REALLY tastes like peanuts and is one of the beers I had at the festival that really stood out to me. It wasn’t the BEST beer I’ve had, but it’s certainly a good beer and the flavor is so interesting I consider it a must-try.
3.7 12oz Bottle. Pours a deep brown with almost no head. If only the taste completely lived up to aroma of chocolate and tons of roasted peanut. The flavor of the peanut is definitely there and I get a little bit of the chocolate as well, just not as much as I was expecting. This is an older bottle and as something that I have had in the past it seems like it has lost a little something over time. Not quite to the point of being infected as so many reviews on here mention, but maybe heading that way. In the end I still enjoyed it and will definitely buy again when the next batch comes out.
2.0 Bottle. Dark brown /black pour with a tan head. Roasted malt and peanut butter aromas. OH NO, this is terribly infected and taste horrible.....
1.9 Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin, very fast-dying tan head. Aroma of odd rubber, alcohol, anise, medicinal and funky malt smells with perhaps a hint of peanuts, sweetness and more licorice. Medium-bodied; Assertive odd funky malt flavours at first with a taste of balloons (inflating), alcohol, nuts, resin and some odd funk. Aftertaste shows some odd flavours still, with a touch of anise and other spices. Overall, easily the worst from Short’s that i’ve had, and although not a horrible beer, one that I will not tell others to buy nor drink. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 16-January-2011 for US$2.59 sampled at home in Washington on 27-November-2011.
2.9 Bottle thanks to rayl101. Black pour with no head. Aroma was big and roasty, I’m trying to find the peanuts but I don’t get much, if any. Didn’t get anything but a deep roasty-ness in the flavors either. Thin body with light carbonation. Just a touch of sourness in there too. Could be infected. Reminded me of an oatmeal stout I brewed awhile back that went terribly wrong.
1.1 Another infected bottle; pours black with huge carbonation. Taste is very sour, a bit sweet and bitter yet. Roasted aroma, little else. I’d like to try a non-infected one, but this is evidently a common problem with this beer. Maybe get a newer one; I stored this one for a while before drinking.
2.5 355ml bottle shared by jsprime. nice roastystout aroma with peanut butter as well. terrible infected sour thin stout flavour. FAIL. will have to try a non infected example, if one exists.
3.5 12 oz bottle, courtesy StFun. Pours a very dark mahogany color with no real head except for a scant ring of mocha colored bubbles. A quick swirl of the glass leaves some soapy legging that drips down the glass and rejoins the body below. The aroma is really nice and shows gobs of roasted peanuts, peanut butter, and chocolate. It smells pretty darn close to a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, which I am a huge fan of. The flavor is definitely a let down from the aroma with notes roasted peanuts and peanut oil along with the caramel and some bittersweet chocolate. The peanut butter flavor is there, but the chocolate was missing a little to me. There is a little twang in the background, but not enough to deter things. I had heard that some of these bottles could be infected. Medium bodied and smooth on the palate with subtle carbonation that leads to a roasted peanut finish. This is an interesting stout and a great idea, but just didn’t come all the way together for me. Pretty good stuff either way and glad I got to try it.
3.5 Bottle From secret santa. Pours very dark brown with a tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, and a nice amount of peanuts. Flavors of roasted malts and chocolate with peanut coming through. Finishes dry and mouthfeel is a little thin. Interesting brew.
3.5 12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a tan skin. Nose is burnt coffee and roasted peanuts. Medium body, creamy with a tang. Taste is sweetened coffee, licorice, chocolate and dusty peanut. I didn’t pick up enough peanut taste to decide if this was a success or not.
2.6 This brew pours a dark mahogany brown color with a medium light beige head that recedes quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of peanuts and chocolate malt. Medium body with flavors that a a fairly radical departure from the smell. Notes of solvents undermine the roast malt and peanut butter flavors. Either something got into this batch or this beer needs an overhaul. Fairly disappointing beer from a brewery that has otherwise impressed me thus far.
3.0 Bottle given to me by a friend. In fact, he gave me five because he didn’t care for it. Pours black with a thin tan head. To my knowledge there’s no coffee in this beer, but it has that green bell note in the nose that a lot of coffee beers have. Also has peanut butter and chocolate notes. So far so good. Flavor starts with chocolate and peanut butter as expected, but finishes thin, tart and acidic. Infection is setting in. Not sure if this is common with this beer, or it’s just a bad batch.
3.2 Bottle. Dark brown pour. Malt, light roastiness, sweetness, peanut, and slightly creamy. It’s fine. Another odd Shorts release, but it’s not a train wreck.
3.9 Dark mahogany bordering black with a cashew colored head. Aroma is pretty wild and shows Peanut M&M’s, Payday, and Snickers. Flavor shows milk chocolate, salted caramel, and roasted peanuts. Peanut isn’t aggressive but shows up on the back end. Nice medium mouthfeel. Crazy but good or crazy good?
3.9 (12oz bottle from rayl101!). Pours near black/dark brown with thin khaki head. Aroma has lots of peanut, peanut shell along with some dark chocolate/cocoa nibs. Smells very rich. Taste is roasty bitter, but the sweet, slightly tangy malts quickly cancel out the roast. Medium bodied with a creamy texture. The finish is dry, but not overly done. This is a well-balanced beer with several things working together pretty nicely. I think they did a good job here.
3.4 The nuttiness is very light on the aroma and almost as light on the flavor. I was hoping for peanut buttery goodness. A nice base stout though. Well balanced roasted malts and light sweetness. Light bittersweet cocoa keep it balanced.
3.2 Reviewed from notes. Thanks to my brother, as always, for picking up loads of Short’s in Michigan for me. Pours a nice medium brown color with a bit of a light tan head. The nose really does bring some peanut character through with a bit of mild bread behind that. Taste is light peanut and not too much else. They hit the concept but it just doesn’t do all that much for me. The feel is nice and a bit creamy, really bringing the flavor forward, which is good as there really isn’t a terrible amount of flavor there. Drinks fairly well but is one dimensional. 4.2 Courtesy of markwise. Thanks! Pours a pretty dark mahogany with thin mocha like head. The aroma is just about like opening a fresh jar of car trunk warmed peanut butter. I really don’t get much else beyond the legume-ness. The taste isn’t as all encompassing ‘peanut’ as the nose with peanut butter, some mild chocolate, nutty maltiness and malts. It has a mild level of spicy hops that seems to reside around the edges of the flavor.
1.9 12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium black with a quickly dissipating tan head. Aroma is coffee, light peanuts and...dammit, there it is again. The sour smell that means for the second year in a row I’ve fallen prey to infected Goober. Taste, lightly roasty with subtle peanut butter and yep, a foul, sour finish. Mouthfeel is unpleasantly slick and lacking in body. God, when will I frickin’ learn with Shorts’ oddball releases?
3.5 12oz bottle provided by Jale, who was extra generous...Black pour, only a light tan head for a second then its gone...The aroma is the star of the show, its a dead on ringer for a creamy peanut butter pie. Lightly roasted, but incredibly creamy and smooth. Short’s nailed it here...The taste loses a lot of the creamy peanut butter, still present but greatly subdued, disappointing. This is very roasted, but has a dominance of stale black coffee that is so strong that I don’t even want to drink it. Monumental failure to me to not transition the aroma remotely in the taste. Worth giving a shot if you like peanut butter, can’t say anything wonderful things about how real the aroma is. Just doesn’t carry over to the taste, which wouldn’t be bad if was tastey itself, but its not.
2.9 Pours black head disappears quickly, but while it was there is a nice caramel color. Light peanut, burnt hay, light coffee. Taste is bitter. Palate is creamy peanut butter, roasted coffee, creamy, flat carbonation.
3.8 On tap at Sunset for their Shorts event prior to EBF. Pours a deep black. Light peanut butter on the nose, chocolate and roast. Sweet and nutty. Chocolate, malt, toast. Very faint earthy peanut butter before a long roast and chocolate finish.
3.3 Pours black with some brown head. Nose is roasted malts and peanuts. Taste is chocolatey with some raw, unsalted peanuts flavors with some bread like malts characters. Taste is roast, and rich bread malt character with that raw peanut flavor in the finish. Rich and fully slick and oily on the palate. Medium full body. Good and like all shorts has that house flavor thats a little dry and tart.
