Sierra Nevada / Asheville Brewers Alliance Beer Camp Tater Ridge

Sierra Nevada / Asheville Brewers Alliance Beer Camp Tater Ridge

2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

The Asheville area is a brewing hotspot nestled in the mountains of North Carolina. Tater Ridge was brewed by something of a craft beer super group made up of members of the Asheville Brewers Alliance. We’re fortunate to call these passionate and talented brewers our neighbors, and we hope this unique ale will be the first of many collaborations to come.

We’ve made plenty of new friends in the nearly 30-strong Asheville Brewers Alliance (ABA) since we started brewing in North Carolina. Two of whom—John Stuart of Green Man Brewery and Luke Dickinson of Wicked Weed Brewing—led this collaboration recipe and work tirelessly to bring creativity and a deep-seated love of locally made craft beer to the Appalachian Mountains.

3.8 Pours dark chestnut brown with a light tan head. Aroma of chocolate, brown sugar, roasted malt, slight vanilla and caramel. Taste of sweet malt, chocolate, caramel, roast, slight bitterness, vanilla and dried fruit. Medium-full body, nice carbonation.
3.5 Tasted from bottle. Pours a dark ruby that is slightly hazy with off white head. Sweet aroma with caramel or earthy/spicey notes. Taste is not like typical scotch ale. Not as malty sweet or heavy. I do taste a little sweet potatoe but would never recognize it without knowing beforehand. Some caramel and toffee flavors with some herbal/spices noticed. Interesting beer. Definitely not like a scotch all but good beer none the less.
3.4 Bottle. Ruby-brown beer with a light brown head. Lemon aroma. Caramel and grapefruit flavor with lemon. Medium bodied. Caramel and lemon linger with grapefruit and light earth.
3.1 12 oz bottle is part of beer camp. Pours a clear brown with lasting off white head. Aroma is sweet brown sugar and muted sweet potato. Flavor is same, with sweet potato mainly in the finish. Raisins and booze in the mix as well. Thin to medium bodied, syrupy, muted carbonation and sticky sweet finish.
3.0 Mahogany to dark copper body with a sparse tan head. Aromas of caramel malts, brown sugar, a touch of spice. A tad sweet, finishing with a sharp hop bite. No easily discernible yam flavor, though I can see it a bit since I’m seeking it. Whatever.
3.4 The aroma exhibits a bit of cocoa and yeast along with some fruity maltiness. This beer pours a cloudy brown color and retains a decent khaki - colored head. the flavor has that same fruiy maltiness up front along with some dry dark roasted malt flavors followed by a kick of spicu and herbal hops. The bitternrss level seems a bit high for the style, but i guea rhats qhat everybody else likes now. The flavor seems muted at first, so I hope it improves as it warms. Average body and mouthfeel. As it stands from the first pass, this beer is just merely good and doesn’t stand out in my mind in any way. Seems more like an India Brown Ale...
3.7 Dark amber color with a thin white head. Aroma is mildly sweet, somewhat reminiscent of sweet potatoes. Flavor is sweet malt with very mild smokiness. Could use a little more body to fill it out. Wife: 3.6
3.5 The was shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours dark amber with a beige head an excellent lacing. Nose of roasted malts, sugar, and a hint of he sweet potato. Medium plus body. Flavor is malty with a lot of sugar, and small amount of hop showing. The finish is sweet. Kind of like a cross between Barley Wine and ESB. Nothing at all wrong with it and I keep looking for something else to appear but it never does..
3.4 12 oz bottle. Brown with an average sized beige head. Aroma is of sweet potato, potato skins, cola, brown sugar, and roasted malts. Taste is of cola, sweet potato, roasted malts, cocoa, and toast.
3.4 Bottle. The look is reddish, brick orange color, beige colored head, and clear. The smell is caramel, veggie, sweet potato, malt, toast. The taste is hops, fruit, veggie, caramel, a certain richness.
3.5 Light brown that has a smooth slightly sweet taste that does not linger. Draft poured with minimal head.
3.1 Bottle: Poured a murky brown orange with a thin off white head. Aroma is light hops. Taste is hoppy upfront with some malt and tingle.
3.2 This was good and gets points for creativity but since its billed as scottish ale I wasn’t overly satisfied. I was hoping, well, for a scotch ale but it didn’t come across that way to me, lacking the heartiness and some of the malt sweetness. Still, not a bad beer, drinkable and sort of interesting,
3.8 Bottle. Pours a clear copper tinged brown with a large light tan head. Spicy malt and a touch of nutty sweetness on the nose. Medium bodied, sweet caramel and a hint of chocolate, smooth and warm with some alcohol peeking through. Warm malt and a touch of sweetness. Not sure if I would have noticed sweet potatoes blind, but looking for it I certainly get it. Slow finish with some more warm malt and a bit more sweetness. Very tasty.
3.9 Pours crystal clear and copper in color with a thin white head. Aroma of strong caramel and light smoke. The sweet potatoes are there but not obvious, an appropriate level in my opinion. Nice, interesting beer.
3.8 Deep copper pour with creamy off white head. Large roasted malt and floral hop aroma. Large caramel malt with a nice finishing bitter. Good carbonation from another solid BC beer.
3.2 Bright hops, sweet malt, grass, and oil on the nose, like a fresh cut lawn. Pours a dark amber. Nice flavors of pine and a little smoke. More bitterness than a typical scottish ale. Very interesting for the style
3.4 On tap at Sideways in Fayetteville. Pours a dark amber with a thin tan head. Aroma is malty and caramel. Flavor is malty and sweet with slight roast and some biscuit. Finishes dry. Good beer.
3.7 Bottle #3 from Beer Camp case. Better that I remember from having on tap at Thisty Monk Biltmore Pk. Pours rich, deep brown. Some head with small, lingering cap- nice lacing. Maltiness definitely comes through first - it is a scotch ale, after all, so I really shouldn’t like it as much as I do- with the Mosaic and Moteka hops pulling their weight for a just-about-right 35 IBU’s. Nutty, earthy, light grass. Hops seem to bring a bit of everything- citrus, pine, earthy, tropical.....all balanced by roasted malt and sweetness from the subtle taters. Mouthfeel is on the chewy side- adds another level of interest. Some bitterness lingering on finish - nice change from typical "scotch" ale. Pretty complex and tasty.
